John Cena Turning Heel Cost a WWE Veteran His Prized Friendship With The Champ’s Father: ‘He called me a four-letter word’

John Cena’s heel turn shocked the wrestling world. He joined the “Final Boss” The Rock and sold his ‘soul’. We still don’t know why he did that but the effects of the turn have created ruffles in the wrestling world nonetheless. Legendary wrestling journalist Bill Apter (of Apter Mags fame) tried to contact John Cena’s father Cena Sr. about this heel turn. The conversation turned awry as Cena Sr. did not appreciate the question. He immediately castigated the senior journalist for the question.

John Cena’s father got angry after Bill Apter asked about the heel turn

Bill Apter is a very renowned journalist. He has been working in the industry for more than five decades. He decides to interview John Cena’s father Cena Sr. after the heel turn took place. Apter questioned Cena Sr. about his son’s actions after the two buddies had exchanged pleasantries.

Cena Sr. got angry and went off on the journalist

“Will you please stop? I’m tired of guys like you. I’m tired of the other phone calls I’m getting. I don’t know why he did what he did. You’re gonna have to get that from him. I am so tired of this. Why don’t we just let it play out?”

Papa Cena mockingly referred to Apter as a “friend,” and said he wouldn’t share what Cody Rhodes told The Rock. He concluded his conversation with Apter by thanking him for “nothing”.

Apter remembered Cena Sr.’s impolite treatment. He thought that following the bad encounter with his old acquaintance, the fans had been supportive. The seasoned reporter said the 80-year-old threw a flurry of insults at him while he was only attempting to carry out his duties.

He was very rude. And I got thousands of things from fans all over the world. They can’t believe how rude he was. I was just doing my job and he just pretty much called me a four-letter word that starts with a D. Actually, he didn’t say what Cody Rhodes said to The Rock, but it was very close.

Cena Sr. entered professional wrestling, mostly on the indie circuit, following his son’s success. At the height of his popularity as the face of WWE, he also appeared on screen a number of times with his son.

An interesting thing to note is that people in the industry frequently reiterate Dad’s advice to “let it play out,” usually in reaction to fan backlash at the beginning of a wrestling plot.

John Cena and Cody Rhodes are set to clash in WrestleMania 41

After the shocking events of the 2025 Elimination Chamber, where John Cena turned heel and joined forces with The Rock to brutally attack Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes, the two stars will finally face off in the main event of WrestleMania 41.

Rhodes has already turned up the heat by criticizing Cena’s actions over the last two weeks and said “He’s the captain now” and promised the audience that Cena won’t get his 17th.

After brutalizing the American Nightmare under The Rock’s instructions, John Cena finally returned to Monday Night RAW. Armed with his unparalleled mic skills, The Champ dropped one of the greatest promos of his career in a rage-fueled rant, before Cody Rhodes interrupted. Will Cena clinch his 17th World Champion title or The American Nightmare get to finish this chapter for good?

WrestleMania 41 is scheduled to happen on Saturday, April 19, and Sunday, April 20, at 7 ET/4 PT, streaming LIVE on Peacock in the United States and on Netflix around the world.
