Joanna Lumley and Stephen Fry back plan for kids to write to WW2 veterans ahead of 80th anniversary of VE Day

STARS Joanna Lumley and Stephen Fry have backed a plan for kids to write to World War Two veterans.

To mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day, when the war in Europe ended, schoolchildren are being encouraged to learn more from survivors.

Bombardier Tom Jones, 103, launched the VE Mail project at a Manchester primary school, where he showed pupils how to work a Morse code machine.

He and four other vets have written letters about their service which all UK schools can request, and the children can write back.

Burma veteran Tom said: “Victory meant the world to us at the time — but the values are as relevant today as they were then.”

Absolutely Fabulous star Joanna, a World War Two officer’s daughter, said: “This is a beautiful idea. This is a chance to ensure we don’t forget those stories.”

Stephen added: “The extraordinary men and women who fought couldn’t know us — we hadn’t been born.

“But it was for us they risked their lives.”

VE Mail is part of a national programme of celebrations led by the Together Coalition, to mark VE Day 80 on Thursday, May 8.
