Irish priests slam Conor McGregor comments on White House visit as Martin urged to write to Trump over invite

IRISH priests have slammed Conor McGregor’s visit to the White House and claim the UFC fighter’s comments about immigration go against the message of Jesus.

It comes as the Taoiseach has been urged to write to President Donald Trump to condemn his invitation of Conor McGregor to the White House on St Patrick’s Day.

Former MMA star McGregor met with President Trump and a series of senior US politicians in the White House on St Patrick’s Day.

Speaking to American media before going into the Oval Office, the Dublin cage fighter claimed “Ireland was on the cusp of potentially losing its Irishness” and that “the illegal immigration racket is running ravage”.

McGregor claimed he was in the White House to “raise the issues the people of Ireland face” and said the 40 million Irish-American people need to hear it because if not there would be nowhere left for them to visit.

The ex-fighter has repeatedly stated his interest in running for the presidency but faces a difficult path to securing a nomination as he must get the support of Oireachtas members or four local councils.

McGregor’s visit to the White House has received widespread condemnation from across the political spectrum in Ireland.

The Association of Catholic Priests became the latest group to condemn McGregor’s appearance at the White House and hit out at his comments on migration.

They said: “As people who value both our Irishness and our faith, we wish to state clearly that Mr. Conor McGregor’s speech in the Oval Office, where he purported to be speaking on behalf of the Irish people, was not representing what we value and hold dear.

“We believe that he confuses personal opinions with truth.

“The sentiments expressed by Mr. McGregor in his speech in the White House in respect of migrants and refugees, are contrary to our understanding of the message of Jesus.”

The Labour Party called on the Taoiseach to write to the US President to condemn the invitation of McGregor to the White House on St Patrick’s Day.

LETTER NEEDED

Labour’s Duncan Smith claimed that President Trump was “trolling the Irish state” by inviting McGregor to the White House.

He said: “I think this was an effort in humiliation of the Irish State by the Trump administration by this entire act.

“I know it has been condemned by the Minister of Foreign Affairs but I think we need to see strong condemnation and we need to see a letter from our Ambassador the United States to the President or indeed from the Taoiseach or Minister to condemn the visit of Conor McGregor to the White House.”

GUEST APPEARANCE

Meanwhile, Trump’s long-time nemesis and top US comic Rosie O’Donnell is set to appear on the Late Late Show on Friday.

The former The View co-host, who moved to Ireland earlier this year, posted: “Well guess what ? I’m going to be on THE LATE LATE SHOW this Friday evening I am thrilled and honoured its the longest running talk show in the world and institution in Ireland hosted by Patrick Keilty and its live!!!!
