Invincible Creator: I Wanted Jeffrey Dean Morgan in the Show Because “I couldn’t let Eric Kripke have all the fun” With The Boys Bagging a Supernatural Reunion

The finale of Invincible season 3 hit all the right boxes, both in terms of the in-world and meta context. With I Thought You’d Never Shut Up currently standing at a near-perfect score on the IMDb, the finale is getting all the praises, as the reunion between Steven Yeun and Jeffrey Dean Morgan couldn’t have gone any better.

As for Morgan’s casting as Conquest, even though creator Robert Kirkman was aware of the potential risk, given the former’s reunion with The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke, Kirkman wasn’t going to let this opportunity slide.

Having already appeared in the previous season of The Boys, Jeffrey Dean Morgan is now gearing up to reunite with his Winchester boys, Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, for the show’s final installment. Fortunately for fans, this isn’t the lone major homecoming for the actor, as Robert Kirkman was adamant about rejoining forces with the Dawn of Justice star, given Morgan and Steven Yeun‘s history in The Walking Dead (via Variety).

I’m always trying to find roles for the actors that I know and love and want to work with again. I’m always trying to find something for Jeffrey. When he started showing up on ‘The Boys,’ I couldn’t let Eric Kripke have all the fun.

As a result, the Dead City star ended up becoming their ultimate choice for Conquest, and while some initially feared the meta aspect of Yeun and Morgan’s history might overshadow the finale, Kirkman felt otherwise.

Despite the dip in ratings during its final years, Negan remained one of the biggest highlights of The Walking Dead. In hindsight, this is sort of insane, as his introduction to fans and Rick was quite gnarly, especially for Abraham and Glenn fans.

Thanks to Kirkman, the Invincible season 3 finale not only elevated an already great show, but Conquest’s defeat at the hands of Mark was also a nice bit of justice for longtime TWD fans.

I didn’t hesitate just because there is the meta of it all like, ‘Oh, it’s the rematch between Glenn and Negan, and now Glenn gets to win’ .I don’t think it ruins the episode or anything, but I think it enhances things and puts an extra level of stakes on it. For anybody who’s a longtime “Walking Dead” fan, it’s a nice bit of justice

With the next season potentially in line for a 2026 release, it’s safe to say we haven’t seen the last of Jeffrey Dean Morgan in Invincible just yet.

Invincible is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
