Former Finance Minister Amin Mohammed Amin Adam has clarified his stance on the controversial betting tax, insisting that he had to correct a misleading statement made by the Minister.
“I couldn’t ignore the mistake the minister made. If you know that betting tax is different from other taxes on lotteries and yet the minister equates the two, then I have to explain that the tax on lottery winnings was never implemented,” he said in a press conference on Thursday.
According to him, he held several meetings with the National Lottery Authority (NLA) and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) regarding the implementation of the tax but confirmed that it was never put into effect.
He emphasized that while the NDC promised to scrap the 10% levy on bet winnings, that should not be confused with taxes on other forms of lottery winnings.
“Betting tax is not the same as taxes on winnings from other games of chance, and the minister should clarify that to the people of Ghana,” he added.
