“I don’t think that would’ve worked”: Cobra Kai Terry Silver Actor Had No Hopes From His Wildest Confession That Doesn’t Get Enough Love

Introduced in The Karate Kid Part III, Terry Silver has been one of the most notorious villains to feature in the franchise. The extended series of the franchise reignited the horrors of his past after John Kreese sought his assistance in running the Cobra Kai dojo.

Portrayed by Thomas Ian Griffith, the show offers a glimpse into his past, including the revelation that his erratic behavior towards Daniel LaRusso was the result of his cocaine addiction.

However, the actor himself was skeptical of this development, as he previously expressed doubts about whether it would resonate with the audience.

Netflix’s Cobra Kai redeemed several Karate Kid characters like Johnny Lawrence and John Kreese, throughout its run. The series attempted the same with The Karate Kid Part III villain, Terry Silver, following his return in Season 4.

Played by Thomas Ian Griffith, the show reintroduced the over-the-top villain with added depth, complexity, and a shocking revelation, which is often overlooked. Season 4 revealed that Silver was high on cocaine during the events of the 1989 film when he terrorized Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio).

However, the actor had doubts about whether Terry Silver’s wild backstory would resonate with audiences. “To bring that back now, I don’t think that would’ve worked,” he told Vulture in a conversation.

He further explained,

But when I read the first script [of season four], I thought, “This is it.” The monologue where I’m talking about doing the blow, and the absurdity of this. I was reminded that everybody’s in on the joke.

He further shared that the idea of a billionaire leaving everything behind for a high school tournament was ridiculous. “It was ridiculous back then, and it sort of still is,” he said.

While initially, after his return, the show does attempt to add depth to his character, exploring his past with John Kreese and their shared passion for martial arts, Griffith’s doubts come true as Terry Silver ultimately regresses into villainy.

Thomas Ian Griffith reflected on his character in The Karate Kid Part III

During his conversation with Vulture, Thomas Ian Griffith reflected on whether he knowingly portrayed Terry Silver with a “drug-induced mania.” The actor shared that it was something the film’s director, John Avildsen, specifically encouraged.

“John Avildsen took a chance on an unknown actor and just kept giving me free rein to say, ‘Bring all those things you do, that glee,’” he recalled while reflecting on his theatrical debut.

The actor also acknowledged that The Karate Kid Part III was not a great film but expressed pride in his performance, saying,

That was just part of his world. Karate Kid [Part III] is by no means a great film, but I’m so proud of my work because even back then, the idea was just to be brave enough not to hold back — I think he really tapped into that.

Despite the mixed reception to his over-the-top character, Griffith noted, “I have fond memories of it.” Yet, his doubts about Cobra Kai’s attempt to add depth and nuance to Terry Silver ultimately proved valid, as the character gradually spiraled back into villainy as the show progressed.

After initially resisting Kreese’s pull back into Cobra Kai, Silver eventually returns, only to descend into villainy once again. He manipulates Kreese, has him arrested, and takes over Cobra Kai with ruthless ambition.

While Kreese gets redemption by the end of the show, Terry Silver remains a full-fledged villain due to his obsession with conquering the world as he continues to take extreme measures to dominate the tournament before meeting his ultimate demise in the series finale.

Cobra Kai is available to watch on Netflix.
