If one had asked Rachel Zegler a few weeks back how she felt about being a part of the Snow White live-action adaptation, she would have had mixed emotions.
Needless to say, being a part adaptation of arguably Disney’s greatest animated movie would be a privilege for anyone. But Zegler and the project had been making news for all the wrong reasons for some time now. That was until the first reactions to the movie came in.
Snow White was at the center of many controversies

When Disney greenlit the plan to make another Snow White, Rachel Zegler was quite young (she is 23 years old at the moment). Not many would have expected things to go southways at the time. But the star of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes fame had other plans.
Back in 2022, Zegler made some striking remarks about the beloved character, her love story, the way her story plays out, and calling the movie ‘dated’ did not sit well with many fans. Nor did the remark that the princess would date someone who ‘literally stalks her.’
While many at the helm of Disney were hoping that the worst was already past them, it wasn’t. The horrid CGI used to create dwarves struck everyone as an unpardonable sore spot. With fans hoping that they would have to pull another Sonic out of the bag, it doesn’t need to be said that something needed to change.

With early responses to the Gal Gadot starrer already here, one can predict in which direction the wind is blowing. And it seems like Disney has done a stellar job in turning the tables upside down.
Snow White’s worst days are past it (or are they?)

Disney had a lot riding on Snow White‘s Hollywood premiere. That would be the last chance for them to turn the tide around in what was being considered by many as a battle that the studio would lose at the Box Office. But Zegler & Co. have shined through it all, making their way past controversies, bad CGI, and an apparent feud between stars.
Katcy Stephan, Variety’s film reporter, couldn’t contain herself when she hailed Zegler for being a ‘shining Supernova’, and shared,
(The movie was) a visual feast with show-stopping new musical numbers and, of course, dozens of enchanting animated animals. The screenplay wisely gives its heroine newfound depth through her fervent desire to become the leader her father believed she could be and a love story that’s sweet as apple pie.
Another critic, who goes by the name, Christopher Rates It, wrote,
‘Snow White’ is not only one of their best live-action remakes in years, but it’s also a film that recaptures the magic of the 1937 movie. Rachel Zegler IS Snow White, and she delivers such a magical performance.
Paul Klein was no exception, as he said,
(I) may regret saying this but ‘Snow White’ is solid. I really enjoyed the musical numbers, particularly the opening one and the Queen’s evil bop. Zegler was great in the lead role, and Gadot was fun. It’s really the CGI dwarves that let the film down. The choice is baffling.
Barring the fact that the CGI dwarves were a letdown, everything seems to be going the adaptation’s way. But there are people who still can’t wrap their heads around the positive reviews.
Many users claim that the positive reviews are nothing but a sham and a gimmick orchestrated for money.
Seems like it’s not going to be a cakewalk to sway the masses. Only time will tell whether Snow White will have a field day or not.
Snow White hits the theatres on March 21st, 2025.
