Fullmetal Alchemist: One Side Villain Is Finally Getting the Recognition He Deserves For Trying To Expose the Homunculi Corruption in Amestris

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood has a complex plot filled with comedy, mystery, and action. It is the jack of all trades. There is a reason behind why it ruled as the #1 anime on My Anime List for years.

The anime has gone to great lengths to give the audience the best experience. Thus, it has also received an original character called Isaac McDougal, who was not present in the original source material. But he is still considered one of the greatest additions to the anime.

As stated before, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood has a complex plot. There is a huge underlying mystery about the Homunculus and Ametris that is revealed in the finale of the anime. However, on the way, there are a few well-scattered hints, and Isaac McDougal is one of the biggest hints to solving the mystery.

Isaac McDougal once served in the Ishvalan Civil War. But after it was over, he resigned from the military and began working in secrecy. He is introduced in the very first episode as a minor villain who is hell-bent on destroying the city and assassinating King Bradley. The Elric brothers get to him before he can do any real damage.

But as he saw his inevitable fate, he shouted out that he was simply trying to save the country. He further asked everyone present if anyone knew the shape of the country. This is the single greatest hint at the Nationwide Transmutation Circle and the evil plan of the Homunculi.

A villain who turns into a hero on a rewatch

When one begins watching Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood for the first time, they are bound to find Isaac to be a no-good villain who just spouts some last-minute nonsense before he is killed. But once they have finished watching the entire anime, they realize that Isaac was nothing but an ally.

In fact, he is smarter than maybe 99.99% of the characters on the show. Before anyone even had any suspicions, Isaac had already realized that the Amestrian government was a front. Even if he had not figured out the whole plot, he had at least realized that Amestris was being as a transmutation circle.

The characters in the anime summarize that Isaac was either a PTSD patient or a criminal. But he had actually learned of the grand plan and simply wanted to serve his nation and ts citizens. By the time Ed learns the truth in episode 35, he finally recalls McDougal and understands the implications of his final words.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood anime is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
