Five hot hatchbacks running over 200bhp that you can buy for under £5k – including speedy Ford & tiny family favourite

WITH the cost of living continuing to soar, there’s never been a more vital time to be savvy with your cash.

However, when it comes to buying cars that can be tricky: perhaps you want something nippy but equally don’t want to break the bank in the process.

Well, you’re in luck as we’ve pulled together the five top hatchbacks with over 200bhp that you can drive away with for under £5,000.

Vauxhall Corsa VXR

Narrowly losing the title of the UK’s best-selling used car to the humble Ford Fiesta, the Vauxhall Corsa is a firm favourite.

However, this 2015 Corsa VXR packs a punch with 202bhp.

The 6.5 second zero to 62 time and 143mph top speed are just a few of the desirable points of this motor.

Volkswagen Golf GTI (Mk6)

This list wouldn’t be complete without the Golf GTI which boasts 210bhp turbo-four.

The small but mighty piece of machinery also features impressive tech – including a touchscreen display, reverse camera and Bluetooth.

This particular model first hit roads in 2009 after it made its debut at the Paris Motor Show in October 2008.

Renault Megane R26 (MK2)

It may scream boy racer, but this French hot hatch thinks it’s a Porsche 911 GT3 RS.

The limited-edition R26 Megane ‘Team F1’ is in high demand, but some models are going for just £4,990 – like this one.

It is highly regarded as one of the greatest hot hatches of the Noughties, making it a modern classic in its own right.

Seat Leon Cupra R (1M)

It might be 23 years old, but this Cupra R is hiding a 1.8 litre four-pot to over 280bhp.

It’s got colour matching brake calipers to match the fire engine red colourway and a very, very large exhaust.

Ford Focus ST

Ford has become known for building incredible performance hatchbacks, and there’s a ST version for all four generations of the Ford Focus.

This Focus ST has been remapped to a whopping 300bhp and given a new induction kit, intercooler and exhaust.

The 2007 motor has clocked up 152,846 miles and has had six owners – one of which had questionable taste in the colour scheme.
