Family’s life ‘turned upside down’ as new dad struck by lorry while cycling to hospital to see baby boy & partner

A FAMILY has told how their lives have been “turned upside down” after a new dad was struck by a lorry on the way to visit his newborn son in hospital.

Alex Borwick was cycling to see his partner Sarah and their new baby boy Milo in Coombe Hospital last month when he was involved in the “terrible accident”.

The New-Zealand native was cycling back to the Dublin hospital to see his partner and son the day after the birth, when he was struck by a truck that hadn’t seen him.

Alex suffered multiple pelvis fractures, severe skin abrasions and significant damage to his left foot.

The music producer is recovering but his injuries are severe and it will be some time before he is able to return to work.

He has undergone multiple surgeries and a friend has revealed he is “lucky to be alive”.

Alex has not yet been able to see his new son Milo three weeks on from the collision.

His pals have set up a GoFundMe for the new dad, who has lived in Ireland for 13 years.

They are hoping to help support the family as they navigate the accident aftermath and caring for a new baby.

Fundraiser organiser Joe Wall explained: “On Monday 24th of February, Alex and his partner Sarah’s baby boy – Milo – was born in the Coombe hospital, Dublin.

“The next day, as Alex was cycling back to the hospital to see Sarah and Milo, he was run over by a truck. The truck hadn’t seen him and Alex is lucky to be alive.

“His pelvis sustained multiple fractures, his left foot was badly damaged, and he suffered severe skin abrasions.”

Alex’s pal continued: “This accident has turned Alex and Sarah’s lives upside down. He has needed multiple surgeries and hasn’t even been able to see baby Milo during the first three weeks of his life.

“It is hoped that Alex will make a full recovery, however it’s early days and his injuries are severe. It will be some time before he’ll be able to return to work and make a living.

This GoFundMe page has been set up so people can show their support for Alex and his family and help them get through this difficult period.”

Wall explained that all contributions will “go directly to the family” to help with loss of income, medical and rehabilitation costs, plus equipment Alex will need to regain mobility.

Sharing a little bit on the type of person Alex is, Joe explained: “Alex is a musician, producer and sound engineer from New Zealand, who has lived and worked in Ireland for over 13 years.

‘GET WELL ALEX’

“His amazing talent and warm, open-minded personality has endeared him to many. Up to now he’s been one of the busiest, hardest working people in the music business in Ireland.”

The fundraiser for the kind dad has been received warmly with €12,346 raised in less than 24 hours through over 200 donations.

Some generous donors have even shared well wishes with Alex and his family.

One person said: “Get well, Alex! Wishing you a speedy recovery.”

Another added: “Looking forward to see you, Sarah and Milo.”

Kind donations range from €5 right up to €1,000.
