The Ruthless Aggression Era marked the debut of WWE greats like John Cena, Randy Orton, Batista, and more, who rose to the occasion and elevated the status of WWE, turning it into a global powerhouse. The period was not limited to debuts only because it featured some memorable feuds that left a lasting impression in the minds of the fans. One such feud was between Matt Hardy and Edge.
However, this feud was not limited until the cameras rolled. The beef was personal and perhaps the most uncomfortable of all time. After all, it featured a love triangle between Hardy, The Rated R Superstar, and Lita. Their saga featured the most vicious of quarrels and comments that are forever engrained in the minds of wrestling fans.
Matt Hardy and Edge: A rivalry that transcends time
The Hardy Boyz, comprised of Matt and Jeff Hardy, made their debut in the World Wrestling Federation, now WWE, in 1997, where they were later joined by Lita and became Team Xtreme. Followed by the joining, Matt Hardy and Lita started dating each other and were ardently in love with each other. However, cracks started to show up in their relationship as The Hardy Boyz decided to split in 2002.
By 2004, their relationship was all over the place, but things were about to get worse. During this period, Matt Hardy was sidelined for over a year due to a horrid knee injury, along with Lita and his new best friend, Edge. The 4-time WWE Champion, who was married during that period, started to have an extramarital affair. The Angelic Diablo found out about their indecent actions on the internet.
The unprofessional attitude of Matt Hardy led to his release from the company. However, fans had his back and ensured the star was re-signed by the sports entertainment company, where they chanted his name each week. This helped the company to lean towards their real-life heat and use their raw and unfiltered emotions to create an electrifying storyline.
Hardy, who still was not a part of the company, made several unscripted calls to a web-exclusive show, WWE Byte This, and ensured that he tore down Edge and Lita’s image even more. In 2005, the Broken made his shocking return to WWE, attacking Edge backstage and repeatedly shouting at how the two would pay dearly for their actions.
While the two stars squared off inside the ring, the real war was on the internet, where the trio hurled insults at each other. The flames of their rivalries transcended their professional backgrounds as they faced each other thrice.
The two last met at RAW Homecoming in a Loser Leaves Raw Ladder Match, where Edge won the feud, forcing Matt Hardy to walk away without ever getting his proper revenge on the two. While their beef was long over, their dormant conflict resurfaced momentarily in 2023.
Matt Hardy almost reignited his bad blood with Edge and Lita
Back in 2023, Matt Hardy’s Twitter account, now X, was hacked, and several tweets were written, raising concerns about each being below the belt. The ‘hacked’ wrestler tweeted with the mentions of Chris Benoit, Linda McMahon, Vince McMahon, and his longstanding enemies, Edge and Lita.
In the now-deleted tweet, he wrote,
Sh*t if I was Edge I woulda f**ked Lita too ngl
The Woken talked about his inconvenience on the show, The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy via Wrestling Inc., where he informed his wife, Reby Hardy, of the situation, who was at Sick New World in Las Vegas. He said,
This guy was able to get into my account and I’m telling my wife this, and she’s like, ‘Holy f***, let me do this. Let me try and help you out.’ So now she’s in the midst of a battle against this hacker.
He expressed how he regretted the entire situation, as she could not enjoy the concert because the hacker ruined their day out. Hardy added,
She’s like battling the hacker back and forth and her band Korn is playing, and I felt so bad for her. We enjoyed the day overall, but it really did put a big damper on the concert, this hacker doing this thing.
Luckily, chaos was averted as he found a way to gain access to his account and deleted those tweets to avoid any backlash coming his way.
