Elon Musk’s Daughter Vivian Talks Family, Drag Queens & the One Question She Won’t Answer About Her Father

Although Elon Musk’s estranged daughter Vivian Jenna Wilson usually shares her thoughts on Threads, TikTok, Bluesky, and Instagram (competitors of her dad’s social media platform X), now she is speaking out in a more public way: sharing her story with Teen Vogue. The 20-year-old opened up about her unique family, her love of drag queens … and the one question she won’t answer about her father in the cover interview.

First, her complicated relationship with her family. Wilson has been financially independent from her father since she came out as trans in 2020, according to the outlet, and wrote a 2022 petition to legally change her name to drop “Musk.” Since then, the SpaceX CEO has publicly stated that Wilson was “killed by the woke-mind virus.”

Wilson told Teen Vogue that she doesn’t spend her time thinking about her dad. “I’m not giving anyone that space in my mind,” she revealed. “The only thing that gets to live free in my mind is drag queens.”

Because of her strained relationship with her dad, Wilson hasn’t met many of her new half-siblings. After all, there are so many of them. As a quick recap, Musk is dad to six kids with ex-wife Justine Wilson (including a baby who died as an infant); four kids with Shivon Zilis; three kids with Grimes; and a child with Ashley St. Clair, who Musk has not publicly acknowledged.

“I will say I do not actually know how many siblings I have, if you include half-siblings,” Wilson told the outlet. “That’s just a fun fact. It’s really good for two truths and a lie. I found out about the Shivon Zilis thing the same time everyone else did. I had no idea before that.”

And when Grimes announced the birth of her second child Exa Dark Sideræl, Wilson found out through drag queens. “For a time, me and Grimes were not really in communication because I wasn’t in communication with anyone in that family, which still holds true,” she said. “Tatianna from RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 2 and RuPaul’s Drag Race: All-Stars 2 tweeted, ‘[Not] Grimes popp[in] out another axolotl,’ which made the front-page of the RuPaul’s Drag Race subreddit, which is how I found out about it.”  In a way, that’s kind of iconic though, isn’t it? It certainly shows how little her father communicates with his family.

Wilson also shared that she doesn’t “really give a f— what they do,” referring to that side of her family. “This is not my problem, okay? I’ve seen [Grimes and Musk’s firstborn son] X once, when he was very little,” she added.

Although, she does do her best to publicly call her dad out occasionally. “The Nazi salute sh-t was insane. Honey, we’re going to call a fig a fig, and we’re going to call a Nazi salute what it was,” she said. “That sh-t was definitely a Nazi salute. The crowd is equally to blame, and I feel like people are not talking about that. That crowd should be denounced. But other than that, I don’t give a f— about him. I really don’t.”

In her vulnerable interview, Wilson also opened up about transitioning as a minor, something for which she had to get her dad’s “f—ing parental consent to get testosterone blockers and [hormone replacement therapy].”

She said that her dad, who she called “a pathetic man-child,” was not as supportive as her mom with her transition, something that she has previously alluded to. Earlier this month, she posted on Threads accusing her dad of using sex-selective IVF to  determine her sex. “My assigned sex at birth was a commodity that was bought and paid for,” she wrote. “So when I was feminine as a child and then turned out to be transgender, I was going against the product that was sold.”

“That expectation of masculinity that I had to rebel against all my life was a monetary transaction,” she continued. “A monetary transaction. A MONETARY TRANSACTION.”

“I do feel obligated to talk about trans issues,” Wilson said in her interview with Teen Vogue. “As someone who did transition as a minor, I feel like there’s so much villainization of that, and I would really like to raise awareness of the fact that trans care for minors, especially puberty blockers, is really, really important. So maybe stop demonizing these literal children or the people around these children who are just trying to help them to feel comfortable in their own skin.” Period!

“We’ve seen such vicious attacks on trans minors, and it’s really important that we protect our trans youth and do all that we can, especially in this increasingly hostile political landscape,” she added.

Despite her openness, Wilson refused to answer one question about her dad: if his politics have changed or if he’s “always [been] like this?”

“I’m going to not answer that. I’m sorry. But [his views are] not because of me,” she said.

Still, Wilson alluded to the answer. “Him going further on the right, and I’m going to use the word ‘further’ — make sure you put ‘further’ in there — is not because of me. That’s insane.”

One thing she does want to talk about? Her dream of doing drag. “I’m really interested in drag. I love drag,” she said. “I have such an appreciation for the art form, and I would love to participate in the LA scene sometime. It’s on my bucket list to win a drag pageant.”
