Ellen Pompeo Was Crying While Shooting Grey’s Anatomy S*x Scene: “I didn’t want to do it”

The whole “pick me, choose me, love me” personality of her Grey’s Anatomy character, Meredith Grey, was a big NO for Ellen Pompeo. Turns out, the actress had some serious regrets about her character and how certain scenes were played out. But one particularly cringeworthy scene still seems to haunt her. You know the one where Meredith and George hook up.

Yeah so, according to Ellen Pompeo’s recent podcast, the actress was apparently so uncomfortable that she cried through the entire scene. Neither Pompeo nor T.R. Knight who played George O’Malley in the show—wanted to do that scene. And just when she thought it was over, the crew hit her with, “too much thrusting, let’s go again!” It seems the CPR went somewhere else.

Ellen Pompeo wasn’t thrilled to do her s*x scene in Grey’s Anatomy

Remember when Meredith Grey and George O’Malley decided to take their friendship to the next level in season 2 of Grey’s Anatomy? Yeah well, lead actress Ellen Pompeo is not a fan of that scene. Turns out she hated filming the cringeworthy scene and apparently cried through the entire sequence, in real life.

Appearing on the Call Her Daddy podcast on Wednesday, Ellen Pompeo was asked about her onscreen character’s whole “pick me, choose me, love me” personality. Surprisingly the actress mentioned hating her character’s whole arc when she begged George O’Malley to choose her over his wife.

But that’s not all, for Ellen Pompeo spilled the real tea when she reflected on the season 2 s*x scene from Grey’s Anatomy. The actress mentioned she was so uncomfortable that she literally cried her way through it. And no, not the classic tears of joy, but probably tears of embarrassment.

T.R. and I are such good friends and we had to do a love scene and we were both crying. The scene was so uncomfortable and awkward.

He didn’t want to do that, I didn’t want to do it. When we filmed it, it was so bad. And then the network said there was too much thrusting.

Well, while both the actors hated performing that scene, things got worse in no time. After enduring the painfully awkward filming session, the crew apparently said Ellen Pompeo and T.R. Knight’s CPR skills were going somewhere else. Basically, they said that there was “too much thrusting” and the scene needed reshoot.

Ellen Pompeo refused to watch the particular scene from the show

If you think Ellen Pompeo went home to reboot her dignity after that awkward scene, then you couldn’t be more wrong. The actress and T.R. Knight were asked to redo the whole scene. After experiencing the hellish situation once, and crying through it, Pompeo recalled how the network told them that the scene needed reshoots.

In your worst nightmare to have to do it one time, we had to reshoot that sh*t.

So eventually, after putting herself and T.R. Knight through the same horrifying situation twice, Ellen Pompeo mentioned how she has never watched the infamous hookup, not even once. And honestly, who can blame her? Some things are best left unseen—like Denny Duquette’s ghost romance.

I’ve never watched that scene. I’ve never seen it. I don’t know how it was shot or covered or how it was edited but I’m full-on in tears the whole entire scene and those are real tears. There was a lot of stuff that I didn’t want to do at the time.

Looking back on Grey’s Anatomy, after Ellen Pompeo reflected on the cringe-worthy scene between Meredith and George, the actress also stood by her belief that Meredith would never have begged George for a rebound if it were up to her. But showrunner Shonda Rhimes believed in her vision, and eventually, the show became one of ABC’s major hits.

Grey’s Anatomy is available to watch on Hulu.
