‘Dragon Ball DAIMA’ Has Created an Unexpected Possibility Even Producer Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru Might Not Be Able to Ignore

So, Dragon Ball Daima completely flipped the anime world on its head, not only because it was one of the last projects Akira Toriyama worked on before he sadly passed away in March 2024, but also because of its stunning animation. The series, which explored an alternate take on the Dragon Ball universe, seriously has some of the best animation quality the franchise has ever had.

Naturally, fans started to wonder: What if all of Dragon Ball’s animation was like Daima? So, with the world of anime trending towards remakes nowadays, like those new renditions of the old favorites like Ranma ½, Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf, and The One Piece, a potential Dragon Ball remake isn’t out of the realm of possibility.

The future of Dragon Ball: A remake with DAIMA‘s animation?

One of the biggest takeaways from Dragon Ball Daima was its breathtaking animation. The series delivered fluid motion, dynamic fight choreography, and expressive character designs that exceeded the expectations. Fans feel that such animation needs to be the new norm for Dragon Ball moving forward.

Answering to this fan demands, in a recent interview with DB Times at the Made in Asia Spring 2025 convention in Brussels, Belgium, renowned character designer and animator Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, a member of the Dragon Ball animated franchise for almost 40 years, talked about this very concept.

When asked if he would participate in a remake of the original Dragon Ball series, Nakatsuru responded:

If I could contribute something and be useful in some way, I would love to. But, if we were to start again from the Dragon Ball manga… perhaps younger people would want to completely re-adapt it. This would probably offer new possibilities. In any case, the original work exists … and from there, there are multiple ways to create a new series. Since I think it will happen one day… I also think that whether I participate or not is not that important. Perhaps what matters most is that everyone can enjoy the franchise for as long as possible. And maybe, in this way, Toriyama-sensei’s work will inspire some and… we could even see a creation that goes beyond even Toriyama-sensei’s imagination… and still, perhaps, enjoy it.

Meanwhile, Nakatsuru’s work is so incredibly close to Akira Toriyama‘s that even the legendary artist himself once had trouble distinguishing between the two. Best known for designing Super Saiyan 4 in Dragon Ball GT, Nakatsuru’s latest work includes being a main animator and animation character designer for Dragon Ball Daima.

Whether Nakatsuru himself will be involved remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: If a Dragon Ball remake happens, fans will be watching closely, hoping to see their favorite childhood series reborn with the animation it deserves.

The nostalgia factor is undeniable, but the excitement for a fully reanimated Dragon Ball series suggests that fans are open to a fresh take on the beloved classic, especially if it maintains the same level of care and animation quality as Daima.

A major concern among fans, however, is how exactly they’d do a remake. Would they stick with the classic old-school weekly anime thing, or do the seasonal release method like the newer, high-budget shows? One fan humorously expressed their concern:

So, it seems like more people are actually enjoying seasonal anime these days because they usually have better animation and pacing in the story. But with weekly anime, you usually get inconsistent animation because they are on such tight deadlines.

Based on how well Dragon Ball Daima did, a remake of the entire Dragon Ball series with a seasonal release could actually be the way to go with keeping that awesome animation and staying faithful to Toriyama’s story.

Dragon Ball Daima is currently available to watch on Crunchyroll.
