‘Dragon Ball DAIMA’ Doesn’t Need to Be Canon for the Sake of Super Saiyan 4

Dragon Ball DAIMA was a final gift to the fans from the legend, Akira Toriyama himself. DAIMA succeeded in bringing back beloved aspects of Dragon Ball GT and making them canon, but does that mean it has to be connected to Dragon Ball Super?

The biggest question surrounding DAIMA is its connection to the main timeline, especially with how it introduces the Super Saiyan 4 transformation. Not just that, SSJ3 Vegeta is also something that we have seen for the first time in DAIMA (although he has the Ultra Ego form now).

Even more so, the influence of Demon Realm, the Namekians, Majin Kuu, Arinsu, and even the fusion medi bugs is nowhere to be seen in Super-chronologically, it doesn’t make sense!

Why DAIMA should remain a standalone story

Trying to force DAIMA into the canon just to justify the SSJ4 transformation isn’t necessary. There are a lot of things that have happened in Dragon Ball Super and considering the scale of the Demon Realm and the ramifications of what occurred when the Z fighters regressed, there should be an ample amount of references to it.

The media bugs (fusion bugs that Goku lost), for instance, are something that cannot be explained away. They were inexpensive and openly sold. The Z fighters faced many threats but never used them. Goku and Vegeta have come a long way; they should have used their advanced Super Saiyan forms in Super as well.

Dragon Ball DAIMA Producer Refuses to Confirm or Deny if Super Saiyan 4 & Dragon Ball Super Are Connected: ‘I Can’t Really Answer That’

There were many situations in which they needed to erupt with the highest amount of power. For instance, when Beerus slapped Bulma unconscious, Vegeta was in Super Saiyan 2 form, but his rage propelled him to higher strengths, somewhat going over the limit.

Here, facing a literal God of Destruction, there is no reason for Vegeta to conserve his Ki or power, he would have gone all out with Super Saiyan 3 if he could. That is why the past and the future collide and do not fit in. There are many such instances.

The problem with forcing DAIMA into Super‘s timeline

Making DAIMA part of Super’s canon could create problems beyond just Super Saiyan 4. There needs to be an extremely elaborate and well-crafted reason to explain how DAIMA fits into the canon timeline and straighten out any inconsistencies with Super as well.

Additionally, Dragon Ball already has multiple timelines and spin-offs, from GT to Xenoverse. There’s no need to squeeze every installment into canon or not. Dragon Ball has had many issues with continuity and DAIMA was extremely enjoyable.

So why make it canon and cause a headache to all te involved parties? The best way forward is to let DAIMA exist as its own thing while allowing Super to progress in the way it was and unlock these forms (SSJ3 and SSJ4). Maybe this way, we could get a new season of DAIMA.

Dragon Ball DAIMA is available on Crunchyroll and Netflix.
