Disgraced ex-swimming coach George Gibney agrees to extradition to Ireland to face trial over 79 sex abuse charges

DISGRACED ex-swimming coach George Gibney has agreed to be extradited from the US to face trial in Ireland.

The former Olympic coach is facing 79 sex abuse charges against four girls, aged between eight and 15 at the time of the alleged assaults.

He was arrested on July 1 in Florida by US marshals on foot of an Irish extradition warrant.

Gibney was due to appear in court in Orlando tomorrow after requesting a detention hearing.

However, his lawyer told the court today the former swim coach had agreed to be extradited to Ireland.

Lawyer Fitzgerald Hall told the court he had met with his client and discussed the case before coming to the decision.

Ahead of the return to Ireland George Gibney has agreed to be detained, has withdrawn the request for an extradition hearing and also withdrawn the request for a bail hearing.

In a document the public defender confirmed an Affidavit of Waiver of Extradition Hearing would be filed “as soon as possible”.

The public document stated: “On July 8, 2025, undersigned counsel met with Mr Gibney and fully advised of his rights in an extradition proceeding, his right to a detention hearing, and his right to an extradition hearing.

“As a result, Mr Gibney has decided to withdraw his request to a detention hearing and stipulate to detention.

“Likewise, Mr. Gibney advised counsel he wants to waive his extradition hearing and be extradited to Ireland.

“An Affidavit of Waiver of Extradition Hearing will be filed as soon as possible.”


Gibney has been charged with with 78 counts of alleged indecent assault and one count of alleged attempted rape.

He had been ordered to be detained by ordered to be detained by Federal judge Daniel Irick of the US Marshall’s service.
