With more than 9.5 million viewers tuning in, Ludwig quickly became the BBC’s biggest scripted show in two years and secured the title of the network’s largest comedy launch in six years.
After its record-breaking success, it was no surprise the BBC confirmed a second season back in October.
However, details about the upcoming episodes have been kept tightly under wraps – until now.
While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Mitchell was quizzed on what fans can expect from the next chapter of Ludwig’s crime-solving adventures.
He admitted: “I can’t tease anything. The scripts are being written now, and it wouldn’t help any viewers to know any more about it than that. We will be shooting this year.
“Our hope and aim is to give more of the same: the ongoing, intriguing narrative and the same weekly, resolved mystery.
“Other than that, I don’t really know much more, but I’m also under instructions not to say any more!
“I’m big on going into a program knowing only the bare minimum because surprise is a huge part of entertainment.”
The first season of Ludwig proved to be a ratings juggernaut, pulling in an astonishing 7.4 million viewers for its debut episode within the first 28 days – and later climbing to 9.5 million with streaming included.
It even outperformed BBC stalwarts like Silent Witness, Call The Midwife, and Death in Paradise.
The series features Motherland’s Anna Maxwell Martin as Lucy Betts-Taylor, Landscapers’ Dipo Ola as DI Russell Carter, and Big Boys’ Izuka Hoyle as DS Alice Finch.
While speaking about the show’s renewal last year, Mitchell gushed: “I’m delighted that John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor has failed to escape the clutches of the Cambridge police and will have to continue to face up to the city’s alarming conundrum-based crime wave.”
