Become a Metropolitan Police Officer in Johannesburg
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) is offering an exciting opportunity for dedicated and disciplined individuals to join its Metropolitan Police Officer Trainee Programme. Successful applicants will undergo intensive 18-month training to prepare for full-time law enforcement roles in the City of Johannesburg.
Minimum Requirements
To qualify, applicants must:
- Be a South African citizen
- Have a Senior Certificate (Grade 12) or equivalent (NQF Level 4)
- Reside within the Johannesburg Metropolitan area (proof of residence required)
- Be between 18 and 35 years old
- Hold a valid Code B driver’s license (no learner’s licenses)
- Be physically and mentally fit (medical certificate required)
- Pass a fitness assessment and medical evaluation
- Have no criminal record or civil judgments for fraud/corruption
- Be willing to undergo vetting and fingerprinting
- Be proficient in English
- Be prepared to carry a firearm and wear a uniform

Training Terms
The programme spans 18 months and includes theoretical and practical training aligned with RTMC policies. Trainees will:
- Enter a training contract
- Receive a stipend in accordance with municipal policy
- On successful completion, take an Oath of Office and may be appointed as Metropolitan Police Officers
