Brits at risk of bowel cancer to receive life-saving tests thanks to Dame Deborah James’ £2m Bowelbabe Fund donation

BRITS at increased risk of bowel cancer will get life-saving checks under a new scheme funded by Dame Deborah James’ Bowelbabe Fund.

The Cancer Research UK project will improve access to colonoscopies used to diagnose the condition quickly while it’s still treatable.

It’s being rolled out in the Scottish Borders and, if successful, could be adopted by NHS trusts across the UK.

Dr Jonathan Fletcher, consultant physician and NHS Borders lead clinician for the project, said: “With the support of CRUK and the Bowelbabe Fund, we are excited to be overhauling the colonoscopy follow up arrangements for Borders patients with a variety of conditions that increase their risk of bowel cancer.

“There will be a range of benefits to patients and the endoscopy service that we hope to examine and measure with this initiative.”

Bowel cancer is the fourth most common form of the disease in the UK, diagnosed 44,000 times per year, and second biggest cancer killer, claiming 16,800 lives annually.

But in November 2024, only 69.4 per cent of patients in England started treatment within 62 days of an urgent cancer referral, missing the NHS England target of 85 per cent, which hasn’t been met since 2015.

Waiting times in Scotland aren’t much better, and are among the worst on record for the country.

In April to June last year, only 73 per cent of people who were referred urgently with suspected cancer started treatment within 62 days.

However, those regarded at higher risk of developing bowel cancer – usually because of pre-existing medical conditions like colitis, Crohn’s disease, type 2 diabetes or having a family history – aren’t covered by this target.

Instead, they are put on ‘surveillance’ lists because they need tests at regular intervals and don’t necessarily have symptoms

Those showing signs of cancer take priority, leaving some people who may have a similar risk waiting long periods for vital checks.

The new initiative, part of a national programme called Test, Evidence, Transition (TET), aims to tackle this “forgotten waiting list”.

Hundreds of patients will be offered colonoscopies – a type of endoscopy, or non-surgical procedure using a flexible camera to examine the inside of the colon – far more quickly.

Specially-trained nurses will then free up doctors to help treat patients with a diagnosis.

There will also be more support and advice on how to manage their condition, and reminders to avoid missed appointments.

Naser Turabi, director of evidence and implementation at CRUK, said: “There is a relatively less well-known group of people who are at a higher risk of bowel cancer, waiting too long for crucial colonoscopy tests.

“It has no official target and so can get less attention and resources.

“We are delighted to support this exciting initiative to reduce the wait and improve outcomes for patients in their region.

“If patients in this pilot scheme can be tested at the right frequency, we have a better chance of diagnosing cancer earlier, when treatment is much more likely to be successful.

“We hope the learning from this work will be adopted elsewhere in Scotland and across the UK.”

The signs of bowel cancer you need to know

1. B: Bleeding

There are several possible causes of bleeding from your bottom, of blood in your poo.

Bright red blood could come from swollen blood vessels, haemorrhoids or piles, in your back passage.

Dark red or black blood could come from your bowel or stomach.

Blood in your stools is one of the key signs of bowel cancer, so it’s important to mention it to your doctor so they can investigate.

2. O: Obvious change in loo habits

It’s important to tell your GP if you have noticed any changes in your bowel habits, that lasts three weeks or longer.

It’s especially important if you have also noticed signs of blood in your poo.

You might notice you need to go to the loo more often, you might have looser stools or feel like you’re not going enough or fully emptying your bowels.

Don’t be embarrassed, your GP will have heard a lot worse! Speak up and get it checked.

3. W: Weight loss

This is less common than the other symptoms, but an important one to be aware of. If you’ve lost weight and don’t really know why, it’s worth mentioning to your GP.

You may not feel like eating, feel sick, bloated and not hungry.

4. E: Extreme tiredness

Bowel cancer that causes bleeding can cause a lack of iron in the body – anaemia. If you develop anaemia you’re likely to feel tired and your skin might look pale.

5. L: Lump or pain

As with lots of other forms of cancer, a lump or pain can be a sign of bowel cancer.

It’s most likely you’ll notice a pain or lump in your stomach or back passage.

See your GP if it doesn’t go away, or if it affects how you eat or sleep

Julieann Brennan, strategic lead and board coordinator for Public Health National Screening Programmes in Scotland, added: “This is an exciting opportunity to work with Cancer Research UK to improve access to our colonoscopy services, particularly for those who may be at higher risk of developing bowel cancer.

“We also want to make improvements in communications with those patients who may be at higher risk.”

TET previously focused on reducing waiting times for people with suspected breast and prostate cancer

It has received £2million from CRUK and the Bowelbabe Fund, created to continue the inspiring legacy of Dame Debs, who died of bowel cancer in 2022 aged 40.

The “innovative” new pilot is a collaboration between NHS Borders, CRUK and the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge.

Sophie Habboo shares the ultimate fashion fail she made on her first day filming MIC & how much they got paid per ep

BEFORE she was a successful podcast host and media personality, Sophie Habboo was just another new cast member on Made In Chelsea trying to make a name for herself.

The 30-year-old recalled the step she took to fit in that ended up costing her 20 times her paycheque.

Sophie first appeared on the reality series in 2017 and became a regular for nine seasons (pictured in 2019)[/caption]

Speaking on her podcast Wednesdays, Sophie recounted the embarrassing moment to her co-host and fellow MIC alum Melissa Tattam.

She explained how she prepped her wardrobe before her first day of filming back in 2017.

Sophie revealed the misconception she had about what was worn on set.

“So when I first joined Made In Chelsea, I thought everyone wore real designer, which of course some people did but a lot of people were wearing PrettyLittleThing,” she told listeners.

Hoping to look high-end and professional, the then 23-year-old splurged on a designer dress for her first filmed event.

She recalled how she browsed Net-A-Porter until she found the perfect look, which set her back £1,000.

And while MIC cast mates are notoriously posh and well off, this wasn’t the case for Sophie, also known as Habbs, at the time.

“So there’s me, we were on £50 a day, I think ‘I’m just going to keep the tag on it’,” Sophie shared.

She explained that she showed up to set already glammed up, another thing she got wrong in the early days.

“I turned up in my dress, which is not the done thing, you turn up in trackies and Uggs and then change,” she said.

“No one tells you, I’m in heels at 9:00 AM and as I’m walking up the stairs.”

Sophie recalled how she had her mic on and was ready to go, thinking her tag was safely tucked away.

However, a seemingly helpful producer spotted the tag while walking behind Sophie.

“[He] goes: ‘Oh, you’ve got your tag still in’ and rips it out of my dress,” she said.

Sophie explained how she was still stunned from the encounter as she filmed her first scene.

I was 23 and was like ‘I just don’t have that [money].’

She described the moment as “unbearable” to think about to this day.

“I was 23 and was like ‘I just don’t have that [money]’,” she told her audience.

She revealed that she had to call her dad begging for his forgiveness for the error.

Sophie went on to appear in nine seasons of the show, where she met her now husband Jamie Laing.

‘Could be craziest week’ say fans as Arsenal and Liverpool set for 3 games in 10 days including potential title decider

ARSENAL and Liverpool could be set for a crazy week which will determine their success domestically and in Europe.

The pair have been slinging it out at the top of the Premier League all season long and could meet in the Champions League too.

Liverpool and Arsenal could face each other three times in ten days[/caption]

Arsenal and Liverpool are in the same side of the draw and if they win in the next two rounds will face off in the semi-final.

The Champions League semi-final first leg take place on April 29/30, with the return leg a week later.

That means one club could beat the other to reach the Champions League just days before they meet in an epic Prem title clash.

The Gunners are scheduled to visit Anfield on May 10 in a fixture that could prove pivotal in determining the outcome of the Premier League season.

Arsenal have closed the gap in recent weeks and Liverpool’s lead at the top could be reduced to just five points if Mikel Arteta‘s side win their game in hand.

So fans are ready for a huge week which could help Arsenal end their 21-year wait for a title, or claim their first-ever Champions League win.

One supporter reacted saying: “This could be the craziest week ever 🤯

Another added: “That would be mental.”

Amanda Holden, 54, looks incredible in a bikini as she strips off for a dip in the pool

AMANDA Holden really is the gift that keeps on giving, and today’s bikini snaps do not disappoint.

The Britain’s Got Talent judge, 54, is enjoying some winter sun before the show’s launch tomorrow night.

Amanda has been keeping her fans up-to-date with her luxury family holiday in Barbados.

Today the TV favourite showed off her stunning figure in the tiny two-piece.

In true Amanda style, she made sure to show off her sexy side, as she posed proactively coming out of the pool.

The white swimwear showed off her deep tan, and her skin glistened in the sun.

Earlier in the trip, Amanda stripped off to a blue bandeau stripped bikini.

She wore her blonde tresses loose and accessorised with sunglasses and a straw hat.

The TV personality posed up a storm while relaxing on the boat with a cocktail in her hand.

She then posed for a photo with a group of pals.

Amanda captioned the Instagram post: “An amazing day on this beauty. THANKYOU for sorting. Such a gorgeous boat”

SIZZLING SHOOT

It comes after Amanda recently flaunted her impeccably toned body as she celebrated turning 54 with a sizzling hot photoshoot.

The actress showed off her enviable figure as she stripped down to the two-piece as she marked the big occasion.

Known for her daring outfits and love of fun in the sun, Amanda made sure all eyes were on her for the steamy birthday photoshoot.

Amanda struck a variety of poses to show off her model looks and it’s clear she could be giving her daughter Lexi, who last year signed a top modelling contract, a run for her money.

In the playful snaps, Amanda threw her hands behind her head as she kept eyes hidden behind a set of shades.

Her gym-honed figure looked fantastic as she posed seductively against the side of the wall.

BGT RETURN

Amanda will be back on TV screens for the return on BGT>

The Heart FM star has been a part of the panel since the show began in 2007 and has showed no signs of slowing down year-on-year.

Amanda is currently busier than ever balancing BGT with her daily Heart Breakfast show as well as her double act with Alan Carr which has seen three series of their Property Job show as well as hosting the Royal Variety Performance together last year.

A recent change to the format of BGT will also mean Amanda is busier than ever before.

The show will now run for a whopping four months with new episodes weekly.

It means the usual semi-final format has been ditched with the judges now watching on each Saturday, similar to Strictly Come Dancing, rather than one night after the other.

UK newspaper accuses Irish rugby of arrogance amid Off the Ball furore about Wales’ inferiority

THE Telegraph has accused Irish rugby fans of ‘insufferable superiority’ amid the social media storm wreaked by Off the Ball.

Earlier in the week a 48-second snippet of its breakfast showed caused outrage for pondering if a 12 or 13-man Ireland would beat Wales.

Presumably Simon Easterby would curse them for supplying such ideal bulletin board material to tomorrow’s opponents[/caption] https://twitter.com/offtheball/status/1889283250847088992

Whatever about presenters shooting the breeze in light-hearted fashion to fill time on a two and a half hour show, the decision to clip it for social media was ill-judged.

At the time of writing the clip has compiled a ratio of 565 replies to just 89 likes, always a sure sign that’s broadly gone down very badly.

James Corrigan of The Telegraph was among the thousands to come across it while scrolling X and used it as the fulcrum of his piece on how Irish rugby supporters en masse have grown full of themselves.

He makes the point that there are plenty of members of the Irish rugby media pack who have earnestly decried the discussion.

However, he adds: “If the digital radio show Off The Ball has indeed written Wales’s team-talk for their daunting task in Cardiff on Saturday, then they might also have unwittingly underlined the visiting Blarney Army’s growing status as being insufferably superior.”

Corrigan continues: “Ireland received nothing out of it but the bolstering of a perception that does their heroes no favours.

“A senseless sneering snippet placed on top of an ever-expanding charge sheet of conceit.”

He later adds: “Of course, OTB does not represent rugby on the island, and fair dues to those writers experienced enough to remember when they were the championship whipping boys and for quickly pointing this out.

“Alas, the stench of cockiness lingers ever more strongly and there seems an emerging fear that during the rise into the game’s elite echelons a former reputation has been sacrificed.

“Collective contempt is not a pretty look, especially among a fan base who previously added so much genuine humour and bonhomie to the occasion.”

The furore has been such that it was brought up at Wales interim boss Matt Sherratt’s Thursday press conference.

Unsurprisingly he clearly feels he has enough on his plate in stepping into the breach left behind by Warren Gatland without adding any extra fuel to the fire.

Dead-batting a question from the Irish Mirror, he insisted: “I learned the first time I did this job, I think I was referred to as an ‘unknown little Englishman’, so I deleted my social media pretty quickly.

“I’ve not looked at anything like that and I’ve not heard any talk around that in camp.

“This week has genuinely been about focusing on what we can bring to the game.

“I respect Ireland, a very, very good team, well-coached and good players.

“Cardiff is a hostile place to come as well on a Saturday afternoon and there will be 15 players on the field that are desperate to represent their country.

“That’s all we’re focused on. Not any chat from outside of camp.”

Abandoned Spanish theme park to finally reopen with £165million plans including upgraded rides and hotel

THE abandoned Tivoli World theme park in Spain has finally been given the go-ahead to reopen – four years after being forced to close.

The Spanish attraction closed in 2020 during the pandemic and has been left vacant for years, but it will reopen thanks to a huge investment.

The amusement park will receive a huge €200million investment[/caption]

Tivoli World, on the Costa del Sol, was named after the famous Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen.

Having opened in 1972, the on 60,000sqm park was once the biggest theme park in the region.

There have been lots of campaigns to get it up and running again since it’s closure in 2020, either as a theme park again or even other uses such as a shopping centre.

However, the local government is set to sign an agreement with the Tremon real estate group who will restore Tivoli World.

The contract states they will reopen Tivoli World as an ‘amusement park’ and ‘tourist and commercial complex’.

The redevelopment of the abandoned park won’t come cheap as it is estimated to cost €200million (£165 million).

The high cost is due to a lot of the infrastructure being left to decay, with reports saying just 27 rides remain intact of the 85.

For anyone planning a visit, the construction is estimated to take up to three years to complete, meaning the earliest opening date is 2028.

Along with the plans for the park to be restored and modernised, a new hotel will be built on the site.

Tivoli World was once known for having rides such as Ferris wheels, The Castle of Terror, a free fall from 60metres, the Mysterious Ship and the Western village.

They also had an open air auditorium which often featured top national and international artists.

Thanks to its location on the Costa del Sol, the amusement park is a five-minute walk from the nearby beach.

It was incredibly popular and saw a huge 35million guests through its doors.

Inmaculada Nieto, an Andalucía MP, previously said: “Tivoli belongs to the sentimental memory of several generations of people in Andalucía who, thanks to these facilities, was the first amusement park we had the chance to go to.

Reviewers called Tivoli World a ‘traditional theme park’

“This would be a profitable venture today. Legally there is no impediment to it being able to open its doors.”

“Tivoli goes beyond the limits of Benalmádena and the province of Malaga, it is a strategic issue for tourism on the whole of the Costa del Sol and Andalucía.”

Lots of reviewers called it a “traditional theme park” with others saying it reminded them of “the 80s” – with new refurbishment, the whole look of the park is bound to change.

While the building of Tivoli World gets underway, here’s the biggest Spanish theme park to visit.

Another Spanish theme park set to open a £2.2 million rollercoaster and two more swimming pools.

And a handy roundup of the best theme and water parks in Spain.

Use these tips on your next theme park trip

Next time you visit a theme park, you may want to use our top tips to make the most of your adrenaline-inducing day out.

  1. Go to the back of the theme park first. Rides at the front will have the longest queues as soon as it opens.
  2. Go on water rides in the middle of the day in the summer – this will cool you off when the sun is at its hottest.
  3. Download the park’s app to track which rides have the shortest queues.
  4. Visit on your birthday, as some parks give out “birthday badges” that can get you freebies.
  5. If it rains, contact the park. Depending on how much it rained, you may get a free ticket to return.

Full list of Scots areas where councils are set to introduce new bin charges up to £45

THOUSANDS more Scots households are set to be forced to fork out cash to get their garden waste uplifted from this year.

The majority of the 32 local authorities have already introduced the charge as they faced funding black holes.

The permit needs to be stuck onto the bins for them to be emptied[/caption]

It means that a permit must be purchased for garden waste bins from local councils if residents have garden waste to dispose.

If garden waste is placed in your bin and you do not have a permit displayed, it will not be emptied.

There are still a handful of areas where the charge hasn’t been introduced which includes North Ayrshire and Fife.

But a couple of other local authorities are introducing the new bin charges of up to £45 this year.

The amount paid for the permit is different for each council area.

Here is the full list of councils that charge or will introduce the charge for garden waste uplift:

Councils introducing the charge this year

North Lanarkshire Council

It was confirmed earlier this month that an annual charge of £40 to dispose of garden waste will be introduced from June 1.

Residents who want to continue using the kerbside garden waste service must purchase a permit for each brown bin containing garden waste.

South Lanarkshire Council

Residents across South Lanarkshire will now require a permit to have their garden waste uplifted.

The permits will come into force from April 1 this year, and a cost of £45 per bin will be required if residents wish to continue to have their garden waste collected.

Councils where the charge is already in place

Aberdeen City Council

From September 2024, garden waste has been emptied for free from one brown bin. No permit is needed for this bin.

A second or third brown bin for garden waste needs a permit for each additional bin.

Permits are available for £30 per additional bin. Households can present a maximum of three brown bins for garden waste collections.

Angus Council

Garden waste collection costs £50 per bin annually, with no discounts or exemptions.

Residents or commercial customers can subscribe anytime, and bins can be shared privately between neighbours, though one person must register and pay.

City of Edinburgh Council

Garden waste permits cost £40 annually (4 November–2 November) and must be registered via mygovscot or myaccount.

The service includes fortnightly collections, with eligibility for free permits if criteria are met.

Registration is only available during specific windows, and the service pauses for one month at Christmas.

What goes in the brown bin?

You can compost your food and garden waste in your brown bin.

You can place these food and garden waste items in your brown bin:

  • flowers
  • plants
  • grass cuttings
  • hedge trimmings
  • leaves
  • twigs
  • small branches
  • bark
  • raw and cooked meat and fish including skin and bones
  • raw and cooked fruit and vegetables including cores and peelings
  • bread, cakes and pastries
  • eggs including shells
  • rice and pastas
  • tea bags and coffee grounds
  • pet food – wet and dry

Clackmannanshire Council

Garden waste permits cost £48 annually, expiring on 30 April regardless of purchase date.

Households can have up to two bins, and permits must be attached to bins for collection.

Council tenants have their costs covered through rent payments.

Dumfries and Galloway Council

Garden waste collection runs from March to November, costing £40 per bin annually (£20 for those on means-tested Council Tax Reduction).

Collections begin in March for those registered by 30 November, or June for later sign-ups.

Dundee City Council

Garden waste permits cost £47.50 annually, covering 20 fortnightly collections from March.

Bins must display a valid permit sticker, and early sign-up is advised to ensure timely receipt of permits.

East Ayrshire Council

Garden waste permits cost £40 annually, covering 10 four-weekly collections from March to December.

Permits are property-specific, valid for the calendar year, and must be renewed annually.

Recycling centres remain free for garden waste disposal.

East Dunbartonshire Council

The council charges £50 annually for garden waste collection in green bins, as agreed in December 2023.

East Lothian Council

Garden waste permits cost £35 for the 2024/25 collection period.

Registration is for the full year, with no refunds for cancellations.

East Renfrewshire Council

The 2024/25 garden waste collection scheme runs from 1 May to 30 April, costing £52.20 per permit.

Households can purchase additional permits if needed.

Falkirk Council

Garden waste permits cost £45 annually (1 May 2024–30 April 2025), with a 50% discount for eligible residents on means-tested Council Tax Reduction.

Each bin requires a permit, and bins without valid permits will not be emptied.

Glasgow City Council

Garden waste permits cost £50 per bin annually (1 October 2024–30 September 2025).

The fee applies regardless of purchase date, and no discounts or concessions are available.

Each bin must have a permit for collection.

Highland Council

The Garden Waste Collection season runs from September 1 to August 31 each year with a winter break in December, January and February.

You will need a permit to receive garden waste collections, the cost for 2024 to 2025 is £48.95.

Inverclyde Council

Seasonal garden waste permits cost £44.10 per bin for the March–November 2025 collection period.

Bins without valid permits will not be emptied. First collections begin on regular recycling days from 10 or 17 March.

Midlothian Council

Garden waste collection costs £42 per bin, with service resuming from 10 March 2025.

Bins require a valid sticker for collection, which may take up to four weeks to arrive after purchase.

Moray Council

The annual charge for garden waste permits for 2025-2026 is £52 per brown bin.

There is no maximum number of brown bins per property, but you must apply for a permit for each brown bin if it is being used for garden waste.

Garden waste will be collected if it’s placed in the brown bin, and the bin displays a valid permit.

Perth & Kinross Council

Householders who wish to recycle their garden waste in their brown bins must purchase a garden waste permit per bin.

Permits cost £45 per bin, for a maximum of two brown bins per property and are valid from April 1, 2025 until March 31, 2026.

Renfrewshire Council

Garden waste will only be collected from a brown bin with a sticker which costs £40 annually unless certain exemptions apply.

Stirling Council

Garden waste permits cost £50 per bin annually from April 15, 2024 until April 13, 2025.

If you buy a permit part of the way through a year, it will still expire on 13 April 2025 and will cost the same amount.

West Dunbartonshire Council

The permit was introduced last year and reduced to £26 due to implementation of the scheme part way through the year.

But from this year, a permit for the full year, which will be valid from April until November, will cost £60.

West Lothian Council

Permits cost £50 per household (up to two brown bins per household) and will be valid from 1 June 2024 to 31 May 2025.

If garden waste is placed in your brown bin and you do not have a permit displayed, your bin will not be emptied.
