Lloyds put aside £1.2BILLION to cover potential claims in car finance scandal – £700million more than expected

LLOYDS BANKING GROUP has had to shift gears and put aside £1.2billion to cover potential claims from drivers for its part in the motor finance scandal.

The sum is £700million more than it expected to be on the hook for a year ago.

Lloyds is heavily exposed to the mis-selling scandal through its Black Horse brand.

Millions of Brits could be due compensation after a court last October found car dealerships had broken the law by receiving commission on finance deals without customers being aware.

That landmark ruling quashed the long-held view that consumer duty protections could not be applied to the past.

The motor finance scandal has been called PPI 2.0 – following the misselling of payment protection insurance which led to banks paying out £50billion in redress.

Yesterday, credit rating agency Fitch said that the costs associated with the motor finance scandal would exceed £2billion this year, largely due to legal costs.

The situation is being closely watched by the Government, and the Treasury was this week blocked from intervening in the Supreme Court appeal process.

Financial giants have warned the Chancellor that there is a risk of spooking global investors if they believe the UK can change its regulations on a whim.

Lloyds Boss Charlie Nunn yesterday said investors had raised concerns because the ruling “seems to be at odds with 30 years of regulation, and that creates a problem in the minds of investors.

Not just for this sector, not just for the financial services sector, but actually a broader investability question in the UK.”

A director at another firm said there was the risk of being penalised later for following the law “to the letter”.

But another big institution told The Sun that the firms that were now being chased had commission policies in place that “might have been legal, but didn’t pass the smell test.

“They should have known it was wrong.”

Lloyds’ compensation provision has knocked its annual pre-tax profits by a fifth to £6billion.

But its shares rose by five per cent yesterday after it sweetened investors with a 2.1p-a-share dividend and a £1.7billion buyback.

Hirer firing

RECRUITER Hays is slashing staff and shutting offices in the face of a weakening jobs market.

It has closed 15 UK and Irish offices and slashed consultants by more than 1,100, including about 300 in the UK and Ireland in the past year.

The London-based company blamed “considerable headwinds from economic conditions”, as its profits more than halved to £26million. In Britain its fees have dropped by 17 per cent.

Diamonds no longer Anglo’s best friend?

DIAMOND’S are no longer Anglo American’s best friend after the miner wrote down the value of its De Beers business by $2.9billion (£2.2 billion).

The diamond industry is currently in a crisis caused partly by the rapid rise of cheaper lab-grown diamonds.

Natural diamonds have fallen in price by about a quarter in the past two years.

The miner is already trying to find a way to offload De Beers, either in a sale or a stock market listing.

Boss Duncan Wanblad is trying to overhaul Anglo American after a hostile £39billion takeover attempt by miner BHP last year.

At the time Anglo American said it could boost shareholder value by focusing on its more profitable core and iron ore mines instead.

This week it sold off its Brazilian nickel business and is in the process of separating its South African platinum arm.

Gas deflated

BRITISH GAS says its focus is on growing its customer base, after Octopus Energy leapfrogged it to become the UK’s biggest supplier.

Profits in the British Gas household division slumped to £297million in 2024 from £751million in 2023.

British Gas said its customer numbers were two per cent lower with 7.4million households.

And the company backs government regulator Ofgem’s proposals to scrap standing charges.

Layoffs shocker for Quiz

SHOPWORKERS at Quiz have complained they were given just an hour’s notice before being told they were losing their jobs and locks were changed on shuttered stores.

The struggling fast-fashion firm, which employed 722 people across 65 shops, filed for insolvency this week before striking a deal to transfer 531 workers and 42 stores to a business connected to the firm’s family owners.

As a result 23 outlets shut from Brighton to Bristol and 191 staff were made redundant.

One worker told The Sun they were informed on a 4.30pm conference call that they faced a job loss before contractors arrived at 5.30pm to change the locks.

Administrators at Teneo advised on the deal to the controlling Ramzan family.

Quiz had already been through one insolvency in 2019 and delisted from the stock market in December.

GOLD has surged to a record high amid fears of a global trade war sparked by US President Donald Trump’s tariffs.

Prices rose by 0.4 per cent to $2,944 yesterday.

Some analysts are betting the precious metal could hit $3,000.

Biofuels for shop

SAINSBURY’S is turning its food waste into fuel for 30 of its lorries.

The supermarket will use biofuel made from its leftovers to power trucks from its distribution centre in Bristol.

The grocer is working with waste processor Reneco and says the switch from diesel could save over 3,000 tonnes of carbon monoxide each year.

And Tesco is working with RenEco on a project to turn food waste into animal feed.

Supermarket instant coffee crowned better than Nescafe, Kenco and Douwe Egberts and it’s 22% cheaper

A SUPERMARKET instant coffee has been crowned better than a host of branded counterparts including Nescafe and Kenco.

M&S’s Fairtrade Gold Freeze dried coffee came out on top of a taste test carried out by Which?, scoring 69% overall.

M&S’s Gold Freeze instant coffee has been crowned the winner in a Which? taste test

A group of tasters scored 10 instant coffees based on appearance, aroma, flavour and mouthfeel, with M&S’s crowned the winner.

Half of the group branded the bitterness level and strength of flavour of the retailer’s instant coffee perfect.

Costing £6.25 for 200g or £3.13 per 100g, M&S’s instant coffee wasn’t the cheapest tested.

But it did outperform all the branded versions in terms of shopper rating and price.

Tasters scored the Kenco Gold Indulgence instant coffee, costing £7.20 for 195g (£3.69 per 100g), well overall in terms of flavour, aroma, looks and mouthfeel – 68% overall.

Most enjoyed its bitterness levels but nearly half said they would have preferred a stronger coffee taste.

Douwe Egberts’s Pure Gold instant coffee (£7.50 for 190g or £3.75 per 100g) came third overall in the taste test, with an overall 66% rating.

Which? said the coffee was well-liked among tasters with flavour, aroma, mouthfeel and appearance all rated highly.

Meanwhile, almost half praised its bitter kick, though fewer were happy with its flavour. Nearly a half wanted a more intense coffee taste.

Nescafe Gold Blend instant coffee (£7.60 for 200g or £3.80 per 100g) came in joint third in the test. Tasters rated its flavour, aroma and mouth feel highly, with it getting a 66% overall rating.

What tasters factored into their scores

How did each instant coffee fair in Which?'s test?

  • M&S Fairtrade Gold Freeze Dried Instant Coffee – 69%
  • Kenco Gold Indulgence Instant Coffee – 68%
  • Douwe Egberts Pure Gold Instant Coffee – 66%
  • Nescafe Gold Blend Instant Coffee – 66%
  • Aldi Alcafé Gold Roast Freeze Dried Coffee – 64%
  • Co-op Fairtrade Gold Roast Instant Coffee – 64%
  • Ocado Gold Roast Instant Coffee – 63%
  • Sainsbury’s Gold Roast Instant Coffee – 62%
  • Asda Gold Roasted Coffee Instant Granules – 61%
  • Lidl Bellarom Gold Freeze Dried Instant Coffee – 57%

Half said the bitterness levels were perfect while a similar amount said it had good strength levels.

Aldi’s Alcafé Gold Roast came in joint second out of all the own brand instant dried coffees tested, below M&S, and with a score of 64%.

Nearly half of the tasters enjoyed its bitterness but around 60% said they wanted a stronger coffee taste from it.

Shoppers can get a jar for £2.25 for 200g, or £1.13 per 100g.

Co-op‘s own brand Fairtrade Gold Roast instant coffee scored the same as Aldi’s in Which?’s taste test – 64%.

The £4.78 for 200g (£2.38 per 100g) jar received an average score overall by tasters, but half wanted a stronger flavour while a third said it wasn’t bitter enough.

Ocado came next with 64%, with tasters branding its Gold Roast (£3 for 200g or £1.50 per 100g) spot on in terms of flavour.

A third of tasters also found Sainsbury’s‘ Gold Roast, which came eighth, to have the right strength of flavour.

The supermarket’s instant coffee scored 62% overall.

However, more than half wanted it stronger and a third said it was too bitter.

Which? said shoppers can pick up a 200g jar for £2.75 or £1.38 per 100g.

Second from the bottom and bottom of the taste test were Asda’s Gold Roasted and Lidl‘s Bellarom Gold Freeze instant coffees, respectively, with 61% and 57%.

More than 40% of tasters wanted a stronger coffee flavour from the own brand item, costing £2.25 for 200g (£1.13 per 100g).

Meanwhile, two-thirds of tasters for Lidl’s coffee (£2.45 for 200g or £1.23 per 100g) said it wasn’t strong enough.

Natalie Hitchins, Which? head of home products and services, said: “A strong coffee is an important part of the day for many people across the UK and our taste tests reflected the competition between big brands and supermarkets to produce the best blend.

“While M&S emerged as the top scorer in our taste tests with high ratings for aroma and mouthfeel, Aldi’s offering also impressed the panel for its looks and bitterness – and is a much cheaper option.”

The instant coffee taste test is the not the first run by Which? in recent months.

The consumer website had tasters look at own brand cheddar cheese, with its winner revealed in October.

It also revealed the results of a blind taste test of Irish creams before Christmas.

He is a solid performer at this level and went close in a much stronger contest than this at Newbury last time. He is a strong stayer who likes some cut and looks hard to beat.

ALCEDO (2.30 Exeter, nb)

He has taken really well to chasing and landed a battling success at Ffos Las earlier this month. He has a hurdles win on his CV at this track and stepping up in trip can bring further improvement.

ASCENDING LARK (4.00 Exeter, treble)

He has won all three hurdles runs including a cosy success on handicap debut at Newcastle latest. There’s more to come.

PANAMA BLACK (5.45 Southwell, Lucky 15)

He was beaten in a photo at Wolverhampton last week. This slight drop in trip looks a wise move.

MAFS UK’s Lacey Martin takes fresh swipe at ex Nathan ahead of explosive reunion that sees him break down in tears

MAFS UK’s Lacey Martin has taken a fresh swipe at Nathan Campbell ahead of the explosive reunion that sees him break down in tears.

Taking to Instagram, Lacey, 27, invited fans to catch up ahead of Monday’s highly anticipated special, writing: “Let’s catch up!! How’s everyone! Reunion Monday.”

Lacey reposted a fan’s comment alongside a racy video[/caption]

One follower wasted no time in making their feelings about Nathan clear, replying: “You really are amazzzzzzilinnnnggggg never forget that 🙂 Nathan whoooooo”.

Rather than ignoring the comment, Lacey reposted it to her Stories, alongside a black-and-white video of herself in a tight corset top and see-through leggings.

Adding a cheeky touch, the Hertfordshire office manager inserted the hands-covering-eyes and laughing emojis – seemingly poking fun at her ex.

The reunion episode is set to be an emotional one, with Nathan seen breaking down in a preview.

Coming together for the first time since leaving the experiment, the brides and grooms will share their thoughts on what went down during their time in the process, where they are in their lives now and their wishes for the future.

However, with the Honesty Box returning too, there are tears and tantrums, as it exposes problematic areas in relationships and puts couples on the spot in front of their peers.

And the first look shows just how explosive things get, as Hannah Norburn breaks down in tears and Tasha Jay is seen storming out.

Then, in another scene Nathan can be seen breaking down in tears as he says: “It breaks my heart man. I’m just a bit devastated, do you know what I mean?”

The MAFS reunion episode starts off well as they all gather on the sofas and share a drink.

But it’s not long until things take a turn for the worse as the voiceover says: “Old rivalries reignite.”

Kieran asks Hannah: “Why are you emotional?” as she’s seen crying.

To which she replies: “Me and Holly,” and she’s seen taking some time out away from the group.

The narrator also says “secrets are revealed and romance blossoms,” as the explosive trailer plays out.

Lacey tries to fight back tears too, as she gets emotional while talking to Nathan.

Those braving the country retreat are: Adam Nightingale, Amy Kenyon, Ella Morgan (series 3), Erica Roberts (series 3), Hannah Norburn, Holly Ditchfield, Kieran Chapman, Kristina Goodsell, Lacey, Matt Pilmoor (series 3), Nathan, Orson Nurse, Paul Liba (series 3), Sacha Jones, Shona Manderson (series 3), Sionnain Carmichael, Tasha Jay (series 3).

Viewers will be able to see them on Monday, February 24 at 9pm on E4, or they can stream on Channel 4.

There are some notable omissions from the guestlist though.

One former bride who was gutted not to be asked back is Charlie Curtis, 30, who was married to Eve Reid, 31, on the show.

Speaking about the reunion show to the MailOnline, she said: “I wasn’t invited.

“It really upset me; I was so upset when they told me I wasn’t going.

Lacey and Nathan's split

LACEY Martin and Nathan Campbell shocked fans by announcing the end of their relationship last year.

Despite their strong connection on-screen, sources close to the couple revealed that they had parted ways shortly after filming wrapped in April 2024.

Now, as the dust settles, it’s clear that their love story wasn’t meant to last. Here’s what went down behind the scenes.

Shock Split – The couple, who appeared on the 2024 series of the hit E4 show, parted ways shortly after filming concluded in April 2024.

Why? – Lacey cited a lack of support from Nathan during a significant personal event as a key reason for their breakup.

What They Said – Nathan expressed being “hugely disappointed and heartbroken” over the split, while Lacey has opened up about the challenges they faced.

What’s Next? – Post-split, Lacey has been linked to DJ Melvin Odoom, with reports of the two getting close at a recent London party.

“I felt so disheartened. I wanted to go back with the girls, as I’m friends with them now, but no one saw any of us being friends on screen.”

Charlie then revealed how she found out she wasn’t invited to the reunion, saying it came to light in the cast’s WhatsApp chat.

She said that everyone was talking about it in the group and she thought her invite must have gotten lost in the post.

Other familiar faces who won’t be appearing are Polly Sellman, Luke Debono, Richelle Cade, and Ross McCarthy, to name but a few.

Darwin Nunez is Liverpool cult villain who is loved and hated at the same time, but it’s clear he can’t be trusted

ARNE SLOT may yet live to regret ignoring the blindingly obvious — that Darwin Nunez cannot be trusted.

Some of the Kop may still see the Uruguayan as a sort of cult villain, Scouse irony making the fans hate him and love him at the same time.

Arne Slot might yet have cause for concern up front[/caption]

But his glaring, open-goal miss at Villa Park has somehow helped turn an eight-point lead at the top of the Prem into what feels like a crisis.

And the days of forgiveness for Nunez will end in the stands if, once again, Liverpool blow their season.

In fact, in Slot’s case, they already appear to be over.

If the Liverpool manager is not questioning his own judgment over Nunez, he should be.

The £64million striker was forever  missing barn doors under Slot’s predecessor, Jurgen Klopp — a bit like on Wednesday when he shot over in front of an open goal at 2-2.

Nunez also failed one-on-one against Aston Villa keeper Emi Martinez with, as Slot has now suggested, his head gone.

Yet a quick glance at the South American’s record should have told him  that, for all his mercurial  talents, there was no reliability factor and that Nunez’s head is often all over the place.

Last season as Klopp’s quadruple bid fell apart, Nunez scored only once in the last 13 games, that run starting with a 4-3 loss at Manchester United that cost them an FA Cup semi-final place.

The Uruquayan could be causing headaches for Slot[/caption]

His only strike during that collapse was in a 3-1 win over doomed Sheffield United.

The death knell to Klopp’s hopes of taking a second title away with him came in the 1-0 home defeat by Crystal Palace on April 14 that dropped the Reds down to third, and that was that.

By then there had also been a 3-0 home hammering by Atalanta that saw Europa League ambitions go west at the quarter-final stage.

Klopp left in the end with only the Carabao Cup to show for his final campaign.

It will not have been lost on him that as he bade his farewells at Anfield after the last–day 2–0 win over Wolves, Nunez was the only player in a guard of honour not to applaud him.

After the shock Palace loss, one fan posted of Nunez on social media: “He’s not alone in this but he was at the scene of every crime with his big, vacant smile and chorus of approval from the Kop.

“Are we collectively insane? Because at this point I have to say, Darwin, I’m done.”

In the aftermath of Wednesday’s draw with Villa, an actual Kop cult hero in Robbie Fowler used similar language.

The 183-goal  former Liverpool star said on talkSPORT: “He’s missed the target, criminally, from seven, eight yards. That can’t be happening.

“It’s a bad miss. It’s a really bad miss. Probably up there with one of the worst we’ve seen this year.

“People worry about Darwin Nunez . . . he doesn’t think about the game enough.”

Maybe Slot was worried about Nunez when he took over from Klopp — but not enough to do anything about it.

The wise thing to do would surely have been to sign another striker as the only recognised frontman in last summer’s squad was Diogo Jota.

The signs were all there for Slot from the beginning and there was plenty of money in the kitty. But he backed Nunez anyway.

And especially as the Portuguese has proven to be injury-prone.

Slot’s only summer addition was the near-invisible £10m Federico Chiesa — and he could yet pay for not adding more firepower.

Nunez posted a “resilience” message on social media yesterday, saying he will never give up as a Liverpool player. But that will not cut it with Slot. Not now.

The attacker has scored only six times this season over 35 games, four in the Prem.

Since his arrival from Benfica in 2022 he has made 131 appearances yet has a mere 24 league goals and 15 in other competitions.

The signs were all there for Slot from the beginning and there was plenty of money in the kitty.

But he backed Nunez anyway and their eight-point lead could be five if Arsenal beat West Ham tomorrow.

Liverpool will have again played a game more after facing Manchester City on Sunday.

Another defeat would prove Slot’s machine is breaking down —  having already dropped points in the Merseyside derby and struggled through a 2-1 win over Wolves.

There was also the ten–change FA Cup humiliation by Plymouth Argyle, with Nunez playing the last 32 minutes of that 1–0 defeat.

The Kop boss reminded everybody as he looked ahead to the City clash that his side are now unbeaten in 22 Prem games.

But he will not need reminding Liverpool have not won a league game at the Etihad since 2015.

And Arsenal are due at Anfield on May 10.

By then the top of the table could look dramatically different.

And what looks like blind faith in Nunez may have proved to be a bad case of short-sightedness on Slot’s part.

Man City to rake in £41m windfall for summer rebuild after picking best possible year for early Champions League exit

MANCHESTER CITY can press ahead with their team-rebuilding plans this summer despite their early Champions League exit.

Pep Guardiola’s men failed to reach the last 16 of the lucrative competition for the first time since 2013 after Kylian Mbappe’s stunning hat-trick for Real Madrid.

Their stint in this season’s Champions League has added to Pep Guardiola’s summer war chest[/caption]

That means they miss out on around £9million for reaching the knockout stage proper — along with the chance to go for around £44m more in prize money.

Normally that could have hit their summer budget but City are heading for the money-spinning Club World Cup in June and July.

The 32 teams are set to bank around £41m apiece just for playing in the USA tournament — with the prospect of doubling that for going all the way to the final.

That should help to bridge any shortfall in the City coffers from a rare failure in Uefa’s showpiece competition — which saw them knocked out in the play-off round by Real Madrid on Wednesday.

They have secured Champions League football every year since they first qualified in 2011 — but face a battle to extend that sequence into next season.

Despite spending more than £175m on four signings last month, Guardiola is keen to bring in more new faces this summer.

Germany midfielder Florian Wirtz and Juventus full-back Andrea Cambiaso are targets.

City’s elimination at the hands of Real has raised further doubts over Guardiola’s future with the club.

But when asked if he’ll be at Eastlands next season, the Catalan told Movistar: “Yes, yes, yes, I’m going to stay [at City].

“We have drawn a very strong opponent at the best moment of the season and when the opponent is superior.

“here is no other option than to congratulate them. Ten or 12 years ago we weren’t even in the picture.

“It’s a competition with many details, a very emotional competition, and I have very few complaints about how we’ve behaved in Europe.”

City will be back in action on Sunday, welcoming title-chasing Liverpool to the Etihad.

THE mother of a soldier who killed herself after being sexually assaulted has accused the Army of a “cover up”.

Royal Artillery Gunner Jaysley, 19, was found hanged in her barracks at Larkhill Camp, Wiltshire, in December 2021.

After a nine-day inquest, Coroner Nicholas Rheinberg yesterday said Jaysley committed suicide following harassment by Bombardier Ryan Mason and sexual assault by Battery Sergeant Major Michael Webber.

He condemned the Army for “systemic failure” in its handling of a complaint by Jaysley.

Ms McCready said: “I believe it was a cover-up. It’s been made clear through the findings the Army have failed our daughter.”

She added 700 male and female soldiers had told her about their own experiences since the inquest began.

Jaysley had filed a complaint against Webber after he “pinned her down” and tried to kiss her at a work social.

The inquest was also told she had been relentlessly harassed by Mason, her line manager.

Brigadier Melissa Emmett formally apologised on behalf of the Army and said it “should have done so much more to support and protect her”.

You're Not Alone

EVERY 90 minutes in the UK a life is lost to suicide

It doesn’t discriminate, touching the lives of people in every corner of society – from the homeless and unemployed to builders and doctors, reality stars and footballers.

It’s the biggest killer of people under the age of 35, more deadly than cancer and car crashes.

And men are three times more likely to take their own life than women.

Yet it’s rarely spoken of, a taboo that threatens to continue its deadly rampage unless we all stop and take notice, now.

That is why The Sun launched the You’re Not Alone campaign.

The aim is that by sharing practical advice, raising awareness and breaking down the barriers people face when talking about their mental health, we can all do our bit to help save lives.

Let’s all vow to ask for help when we need it, and listen out for others… You’re Not Alone.

If you, or anyone you know, needs help dealing with mental health problems, the following organisations provide support:
