I run a remote pub & guest house on the NC500 – tourists have driven our regulars away

A LANDLADY who runs a remote pub on Scotland’s iconic North Coast 500 has said the popularity of the route is driving customers away.

Judith Fish, owner of the Applecross Inn, claims the route – dubbed Scotland‘s Route 66 – has brought no benefits to local businesses, as it has turned scenic locations into “one-night stops”.

The route is busy with motorhomes clogging single track roads[/caption]

Judith, who has managed the property – which features seven en-suite guest rooms – for over 35 years, said locals were “never really asked” about being included in the 516-mile route.

She also claimed there was no consultation process with residents of Applecross village, which has a permanent population of just 544.

Instead, Judith says the remote area is becoming overwhelmed with tourists treating it as a road trip stop rather than a destination to stay and enjoy for longer.

She told the Press and Journal: “Originally, I thought it would be lovely for people and businesses across the north.

“We live in a very remote area – we’re five hours away from the likes of Glasgow and Edinburgh.

“There isn’t always a lot to do, and that’s why some people live here. It’s remote, peaceful, and they like it that way.

“For us, we were getting six months of business and not really doing much more than usual.

“The route contributed to us becoming a one-night stop rather than Applecross being its own destination.

“Some locals say we should come off the North Coast 500 altogether, and I understand why.

“But I’m not against it – there just needs to be more responsibility.”

Judith explained that, while she was initially positive about the benefits of an organised route, she has since recognised that the long distances and congested single-track roads are discouraging regular tourists.

She added: “It’s a 500-mile journey, which is a very long distance to travel. People don’t always have time to come back – they’ll be on a strict schedule.

“We do get some who return because Applecross is so beautiful, but it has become more difficult to attract repeat business.

“A lot of the regular customers we used to have have stopped coming because of how busy it gets.

“The traffic has become a real issue here. The roads aren’t made for campervans and motorhomes, and some of them can be terrifying.”

An Applecross local previously revealed the WORST things he’s encountered with motorhome tourists.

But there have been many reports of anti-social behaviour stemming from the parade of campervans and motorhomes trailing up the single-track route.

Robin Pettigrew, who lives in Lochcarron in Wester Ross, stressed he is “not against tourism” but blasted the “gross” behaviour of some travellers.

Speaking to The Press and Journal about Applecross, he said: “There was human excrement all over the place, toilet paper.

“We used to go to the beach regularly to take the dogs out, and it just got absolutely impossible and unsafe to go anywhere near it.

“I’ve got photographs where there’s literally dozens of people camping in the bay area and the place was covered in human faeces; it was disgusting.”

‘The Apothecary Diaries’ Could Turn Maomao Into the Most Morally Conflicting Character in Order to Save Jinshi

The Apothecary Diaries is taking new twists and turns with each episode. To be fair, the storyline goes above and beyond to keep its subtlety intact even in the most dire circumstances. However, it also deals with some sensitive issues unflinchingly without worrying about portraying the characters in a bad light. Interestingly, Maomao, as the […]

Alexa owners warned their favourite voice features may not work after major speaker upgrade

HOUSEHOLDS with Amazon Alexa devices have been warned that their favourite voice features may be unavailable after a new update.

The latest update is set to bring Alexa Plus – Amazon’s new-and-improved AI voice assistant – into the fold.

Three Amazon Echo smart speakers and illuminated Echo Buttons.
AP
Alexa Plus will be available on an Echo Show 8, 10, 15, or 21 smart display, Fire TV devices, Fire tablets, on the web at Alexa.com, and in the Alexa app[/caption]

It is supposed to be a super-smart version of Alexa, powered by generative AI.

That means Alexa should be able to understand and respond to natural language in a conversational way.

It will also be able to remember your likes and dislikes and respond to emotion in your voice.

For example, you will be able to say things like, “Alexa, I’m cold, and it’s too dark in here,” and it should know to turn on the lights and raise the heat.

However, consumers have been told to stick with the old Alexa if they have any favourite skills they use.

This is because not all original Alexa skills are being ported over to Alexa Plus.

Alexa Plus will be available on an Echo Show 8, 10, 15, or 21 smart display, Fire TV devices, Fire tablets, on the web at Alexa.com, and in the Alexa app.

A handful of early models, like the first-gen Echo Dot, Echo, and Echo Show, won’t receive the upgrade.

Similarly, it won’t work on devices with built-in Alexa, such as Sonos speakers or the Ecobee smart thermostat at launch.

Although it may come to those gadgets in the future.

Owners of non-Alexa Plus compatible devices will be able to continue using the original Alexa.

Right now, Alexa Plus is free to use – but it is only available in the US so far.

It will eventually fall behind a paywall and require a $19.99 monthly subscription or an Amazon Prime membership.

Amazon’s focus is now on the new and improved Alexa, the company’s head of devices and services, Panos Panas, told The Verge.

The original Alexa will continue to be updated, but it is now all hands on deck to build up Alexa Plus.

What is Alexa?

If you've never heard of Alexa, here's what you need to know...

  • Alexa is an “intelligent” personal assistant built by Amazon.
  • You can find her on several different devices, including Amazon’s Echo speakers.
  • Alexa responds to voice commands, and can talk back to you.
  • She can perform thousands of different tasks, including telling you about the news or weather.
  • But she can do more complex things too, like ordering a pizza or arranging an Uber taxi pick-up.
  • To activate Alexa, you need to say “Alexa” to an Amazon Echo speaker.
  • Because she’s powered by artificial intelligence, Alexa is constantly getting smarter.
  • Alexa will also get more used to your voice, and better understand what you want her to do over time.

Marley Shelton accessorised with gold chain necklaces and styled her blonde hair into waves for her day out in the US city, padding around in a pair of white trainers.

The California-born screen star, now 50, showed off her ageless look as she went make-up free.

She was seen hopping out of black people carrier with her keys and phone in her hand.

Movie fans will no doubt be left doing a double take over the former singer’s youthful look.

The mum of two often keeps fans updated with her career on Instagram.

The screen star, who rocketed to fame after she played lifeguard Wendy Peffercorn in 1993 flick The Sandlot, was hailed an “absolute smokeshow” after she posted pictures from her 1923 movie.

One fan then wrote: “You look great Marley. I think you’re a beautiful woman and a good actress. I liked you on the Sandlot as Wendy.”

Another posted of the screen queen, who has also starred in Yellowstone, Pleasantville and Sugar & Spice to name a few: “You are literally the most wonderful actress I have ever seen.

“I recognised you from the role of Judy Hicks.”

Marley first played Deputy Judy Hicks in Wes Craven horror movie Scream’s 2011 instalment, before resuming the role in 2022.

She had a long history with the film franchise, previously auditioning for the role of Tatum Riley – played by Rose McGowan – back in 1996.

Yet her Scream moment finally came when actress Lake Bell, 46, dropped out just weeks before filming.

Scream five, released on January 14, 2022, saw the return of Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox as well as Marley, whose character had received a promotion.

Talking of reprising her movie role she told the Daily Dead: “The unique opportunity to be able to reprise a role, especially picking it up 10 years later.

“We played with the passage of time in the plot and I had never had that type of opportunity before.

“So as an actor, it was really exciting, like, ‘Okay, where is she now? How has she evolved? How has she changed? What’s the same? What are the constant through lines for her?'”

She added: “There are all kinds of evolutions that have gone on for Judy. She’s no longer Deputy Judy Hicks, she’s Sheriff Hicks now.

“So I was excited to sink my teeth into just playing her again and, of course, to be able to get to do another instalment of the Scream franchise.

“It was pointed out to me this morning that Judy Hicks is the only character to be introduced in one of the sequels and then make it into a later instalment.

“So I was like, ‘Oh, cool. I’ve got my own calling card here. That’s pretty awesome.'”

OFF SCREEN

Off screen, Marley is married to American film producer Beau Flynn, 55.

The pair said I Do in 2001 and share two daughters.

Marley is active on Instagram and showcased her fondness for fun TikTok dance videos during the coronavirus pandemic.

She also shares insights into life at her stunning home as well as her love for flowers and the LA Rams.
