Court hears murder accused told friend he stabbed & killed wife and that knife used was bought 2 days before incident
THE husband of a mum-of-one found dead in her home told a friend he had stabbed her with a knife and killed her, a murder trial heard today.
Deepa Paruthiyezhuth Dinamani, 38, died after suffering a large incisive wound to the front of her neck which severed the strap muscle, causing a loss of blood.
Her murder trial at the Central Criminal Court in Cork was today told that her husband, Regin Parithapara Rajan, said he had killed his wife during an emergency call to 999.
The court also heard that the knife used to kill the accountant had been purchased two days earlier by her husband and when this was recovered at the scene and examined, his palm print was found on the blood stained weapon.
Mr Rajan, 43, is charged with the murder of his wife at their home in Cardinal Court, Wilton, Cork on July 14, 2023.
He pleaded not guilty to the murder of Ms Dinamani contrary to Common Law when he was arraigned this morning.
Ms Dinamani was a chartered accountant from Kerala in Southern India and had moved to Ireland in the months before her death with her young son.
She worked in an accounting/finance position at Alter Domus in the Airport Business Park in Cork.
Mr Rajan is also a native of the same area in India.
Prosecution counsel Sean Gillane, SC, opened the trial before Ms Justice Siobhan Lankford and a jury of seven women and five men.
He said the deceased was very well regarded and was well educated. She went to school, qualified as an accountant, spoke fluent English, and was financially supportive of her family in India.
She and Mr Rajan, who share a son, met in early 2015 and were married the following October.
MARRIAGE DIFFICULTY
Ms Dinamani had been working in India until she got a job in Cork in March 23, where she was regarded as a good worker and a great colleague.
A room was let out in the house to a nurse who worked in Cork University Hospital.
Mr Rajan was friends with a man who lived with his wife on Model Farm Road and the two men were in regular contact with each other.
Mr Gillane said the marriage between Ms Dinamani and her husband was in difficulty.
‘RELATIONSHIP HAD COOLED’
He said: “The relationship had cooled and they had spent time sleeping in different bedrooms. She was considering getting a divorce.”
He continued that in July 23 their young son was attending summer camp where he would be dropped off in early morning and collected in the afternoon.
On July 14, Ms Dinamani was working from home and her husband dropped off the child.
Around lunch time Mr Rajan contacted his friend and asked him to collect his son as he had a job interview that afternoon.
DAY OF DEATH
His friend collected the boy and brought him home.
At around 7pm the friend tried contacting the dad to arrange to bring the child home but he couldn’t get him.
The nurse came home in the evening and noticed nothing untoward in the house. She went to her room thinking the house was empty. However, she was contacted by Mr Rajan’s friend who said they had the child and asked where everybody was.
She went to check and found Mr Rajan at the door of the bedroom where he said his wife was working.
‘HE SAID HE HAD KILLED HIS WIFE’
In the meantime the friend arrived at the house with his wife and the child.
The three adults left and went for a walk around Wilton, arriving back at the house where he spoke to Mr Rajan, who the court heard told him he had killed his wife by stabbing her with a knife.
Mr Gillane said: “He (Rajan) said he had killed his wife and she was inside. His reaction was of shock. A 999 call was made by Rajan in which he indicated that he had killed his wife.”
Gardai arrived at the house and when they entered the bedroom they found Ms Dinamani dead.
KNIFE RECOVERED
The bedroom was heavily bloodstained and Ms Dinamani was dead and there was nothing that could be done to save her.
A bloodstained knife was recovered at the scene which had the palm print of the accused on it.
Mr Gillane said: “The knife was purchased by him (Rajan) two days before the incident.
“You will hear she suffered a large incisive wound to the front of her neck which severed the strap muscle in her neck. The cause of death was blood loss complicated by the inhalation of blood because of the wound.”
The trial is expected to last up to three weeks and will involve a “significant number of witnesses”.
