Sir Keir Starmer promises to ‘drive down cost of motoring’ as he makes potholes pledge & vows to ease pressure on bills

PM SIR Keir Starmer has promised Sun readers he will “drive down the cost of motoring” — starting with a £1.6billion blitz on Britain’s pothole plague.

He said it is now “extremely hard” to be a driver on a modest income and vowed to take on those hammering motorists at every turn.

Speaking from a Halfords repair shop, the PM said councils must prove they are actually fixing roads or lose out on funding[/caption]

Unveiling his investment plan to fix the country’s battered roads — and make councils prove the work is done — he said he also wanted to ease pressure at the pumps, in car parks and on insurance bills

Sir Keir said: “We’ve got to look at all of these issues. Whether it’s insurance, whether it’s parking, whether it’s a number of other measures — it is extremely hard to be a motorist on a modest income these days. And yes, I do want to bear down on all that.

“I think we need to drive down the cost of motoring, because that’s a lifeline for so many people.”

He took aim at greedy fuel retailers for failing to pass on months of falling wholesale costs.

It comes after The Sun’s Keep It Down campaign has pressured ministers to keep fuel duty frozen for more than a decade.

If Chancellor Rachel Reeves had scrapped the 5p fuel duty cut in October, petrol prices would have easily soared past the pre-pandemic record of 142.5p a litre.

Sir Keir said: “I am concerned about whether the benefit the Government’s putting in place is being passed on.

“The reason for freezing fuel duty is to ensure the motorist is better able to afford getting around, using their car, their van, whatever it may be.

“It’s not as a bit of comfort for somebody else.

“So I want to make sure that is passed on, so that when we make decisions in central government about fuel duty that is then reflected in the pockets of working people across the country.”

Labour has formally committed to rolling out the Fuel Finder scheme by the end of 2025, requiring forecourts to share live price data so drivers can track the cheapest fuel available nearby.

Asked if the scheme could be fast-tracked, Sir Keir admitted: “Well, I don’t think we can bring that forward, but I am absolutely clear that we need to bear down on this.”

The scheme was first proposed by Britain’s competition watchdog after it found drivers were being ripped off at the petrol pumps

The Sun also understands the Government’s motor insurance task force will be relaunched next month under Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander and Treasury Minister Emma Reynolds.

The group will include insurers, brokers and consumer watchdogs — with a final action plan to help bring down premiums expected by September.

The task force was a manifesto pledge, but was delayed after then Transport Secretary Louise Haigh quit over a past conviction.

The PM admitted it is tricky to crack down on cowboy parking firms as they operate on private land, but vowed not to sit back.

On potholes, Sir Keir said he was delivering on a promise made to Sun readers eight months ago.

Speaking from a Halfords repair shop in Cambridge, he said councils must prove they are actually fixing roads or lose out on funding.

Under the new rules, councils must publish detailed reports or risk losing 25 per cent of their share of a £500million roads pot.

The wider road network will also benefit from a separate £4.8billion investment.

Sir Keir said: ‘Councils must now tell us how many potholes they’ve filled in within the next few months, so we’ve got a record’[/caption]

Sir Keir said: “What we’ve done is set aside a record amount of money, allocate it, but importantly, for the first time ever, introduced a delivery mechanism.

“Councils must now tell us how many potholes they’ve filled in within the next few months, so we’ve got a record.

“Then we can rate them, so we know where they’re doing it well and where they’re not.

“Anybody who’s a driver will know, if you drive from one area to another, there is a difference in the quality of the roads. We can’t go on like that.”

He added: “This was a commitment I made to Sun readers in Opposition.

“I said that we would do this — and I absolutely understand how frustrating this is.”

CAR 'CON' CONCERN

SIR Keir Starmer said he “understands the concern” over TikTok influencers boasting of landing £30,000 cars through Motability

The Sun has revealed social media users have posted guides on how to “game” the taxpayer-backed scheme.

It is designed to let disabled people use their benefits to lease a motor.

‘Tacky’ Meghan accused of exploiting Archie & Lilibet to promote clothes as expert says new brand may break Megxit deal

THE Duchess of Sussex has been accused of exploiting her two young kids as part of her latest money-making venture.

Meghan, 43, yesterday posted from her As Ever brand a rare snap with Archie, five, and Lilibet, three, also tagging herself.

Meghan, 43, launched an online venture yesterday shortly after posting a rare photo of herself with her two children, guaranteeing huge amounts of traffic.

One expert called it “tacky and desperate”

It is the latest business move for California-based Meghan, who previously agreed with husband Prince Harry not to use their royal titles to make money.

Royal author and journalist Phil Dampier said: “Nothing happens by accident and she would have thought this through and knows putting a photo of her children out at the same time as her clothing line would get maximum publicity.

‘Lack of imagination’

“It begs the question whether Meghan is exploiting her two children who remain in the line of succession. I’d expect the Palace to take a dim view of this.”

The Duchess posted the snap of herself with Archie, five, and three-year-old Lilibet on the Instagram account of her As Ever brand, tagging herself in.

She added a dove emoji and wrote: “Every day is a love story.”

Meghan has 2.6million on her personal account, while As Ever has around 734,000.

An hour after posting the loving family pic, she revealed she now has a “ShopMy” page featuring “a hand-picked and curated collection of the things I love — I hope you enjoy them”.

They include Heidi Merrick’s “Windsor” gown for an eye-watering £1,068, a £600 pair of Saint Laurent sandals, a £400 necklace and a £148 linen shirt.

All the clothes and accessories listed have links for followers to click and buy, and Meghan may get money when they do.

A disclaimer says: “Please note, some products may contain commissionable links!”

The Duchess, who recently revealed on her Netflix show she wanted to be known as Meghan Sussex, teased there will be “more to come”.

Dickie Arbiter, former press secretary to the late Queen, said cashing in on her royal links would have broken the terms of the Megxit deal had she been promoting her new collection in the UK.

He said: “It’s tacky — everything they do is tacky”, adding it was “a mixture of a lack of imagination and desperation”.

He said: “They left the UK because they wanted privacy.”

It comes weeks after Meghan’s American Riviera Orchard brand had to be renamed As Ever following trademark setbacks.

Last year, she and Harry launched Sussex.com to replace their Archewell website despite previously being banned by the Queen from using “SussexRoyal” during Megxit.

Former defence sec Ben Wallace urges Britain to WITHDRAW from global landmines ban championed by Princess Diana

BEN Wallace has urged Britain to withdraw from a global landmines ban championed by Princess Diana.

The former Tory defence secretary claimed the weapons were vital to fend off Russia.

Former defence secretary Ben Wallace urged Britain to withdraw from a global landmines ban[/caption]

Britain signed up to voluntary bans on landmines, in 1997, and cluster bombs in 2008, as they kill and maim civilians decades after conflicts end.

Landmines are placed on or in the ground and are usually triggered by pressure or tripwires.

Cluster bombs are miniature bomblets usually scattered from larger rockets and remain unexploded for years – until they are picked up or mishandled. Children mistake them for toys.

But Wallace slammed the bans were “old and out of date” and said they had hamstrung UK support for Ukraine.

He said: “From my time as Secretary of State for Defence, I have first-hand experience of how the Ottawa Treaty prevented us and others from helping Ukraine.”

He added: “I was beset by lawyers applying old and out of date treaties to new capabilities which are vital to saving life and to countering Russian lethality.”

“Unless these treaties can be updated to reflect modern security imperatives, we must leave them.”

It comes after Poland and three Baltic states said they would withdraw from the agreements to defend their borders from Russia.

A report by the Policy Exchange think tank warned “decisive action is required”.

Britain signed the Ottawa Treaty landmines ban in December 1997, weeks after Princess Diana died in a car crash in Paris.

She had championed the landmine ban and visited deminers in Angola where explosives left over from civil wars killed and maimed countless children.

Wallace insisted the bans were designed to stop “reckless use by certain powers”.

But he said: “Russia, China , North Korea are the very powers which have refused to sign up to such prohibitions.”

The CEO of the Halo Trust demining charity, ex-Major General James Cowan, said it would be a “crying shame” if the UK withdrew.

But he insisted the treaty had to evolve to stay “relevant” today.

The former Black Watch commander, who served in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, said: “I was an infantry soldier and am now leader of the Halo Trust so I have seen this problem from both sides.

“It would be a crying shame if the United Kingdom left the Mine Ban Treaty.

“However, those supporting the treaty must fight to ensure its continued relevance to the issues of today.”

The landmine ban had 164 signatories including every Nato nation except America.

In response to the announcements by  Poland, Latvia and Lithuania to leave the Ottawa Treaty, it said: “The Halo Trust understands the deadly nature of landmines better than most.

We face these weapons around the world every day, witnessing first hand the harm they cause to civilians and communities.

“But the invasion of Ukraine has created a new reality for the defence of Eastern Europe

“We urge all states – whether signatories or not – to support landmine clearance with robust funding mechanisms to build on this progress in the years to come”.

Ukraine and Russia use drones to drop mines and routinely fire rockets armed with cluster munitions.
