England manage feat not seen for 33 years after Thomas Tuchel’s line-up decision against Latvia

ENGLAND boss Thomas Tuchel broke rank against Latvia by naming a team 33 years in the making.

The Three Lions won 3-0 led by a stunning Reece James free-kick before the break, with captain Harry Kane and super sub Eberechi Eze getting on the scoresheet in the second half.

It was the first England team since 1992 to not feature a Man Utd, Man City or Liverpool player in the starting XI[/caption] England vs. Latvia World Cup qualifiers starting XI.

But history was made before the game had even begun thanks to the new England boss.

Tuchel, 51, made four changes to the team which beat Albania 2-0 on Friday, bringing in James for his first start for two-and-a-half years, Marc Guehi, Morgan Rogers and Jarrod Bowen into the team.

Those changes, along with the other seven stars on the pitch, meant Tuchel named a side without a single Manchester United, Manchester City or Liverpool player in it.

It was the first time an England player from one of the three clubs – who have all have dominated English football at various points in history – was missing from the team since Euro 1992.

The match in question was a group game against Sweden.

England, then managed by Graham Taylor, lost the game 2-1 and were subsequently sent home from the tournament.

Coincidentally, it was also the first time in 33 years that an England defender had scored from a direct free-kick, with Chelsea star James emulating Stuart Pearce against Turkey.

Marcus Rashford, who had a markedly improved if still underwhelming game today compared to Friday, represents a slight loophole in that he is on loan at Aston Villa from Man Utd.

However, his presence as a Villa player represented its own record for the Villans.

It was the first time three Aston Villa players – Rashford, Ezri Konsa and Rogers – were named in the starting XI of an England team since 2009 when Gabby Agbonlahor, Emile Heskey and Gareth Barry played in a friendly against Spain.

In a night were records came tumbling down, Eze’s goal saw him become the first Crystal Palace player since Peter Taylor in 1976 to score for the national team.

Asked if he saw an improvement from his first game in charge, Tuchel said: “I guess so. It was not an easy match, we had to unlock it.

“There are a lot of good things; it’s a good result, another clean sheet, we created a lot of chances from set pieces.

“Okay, we needed a free kick to unlock (the game) but, in general, I’m happy with the attitude, the energy and the desire to do the stuff that we want. We will get there.”

Kane, who scored his 71st Three Lions goal with a far-post tap in from Declan Rice‘s cross, agreed that the team had improved from Friday.

He told ITV: “I think so. There were more patterns of play, more chances and more creative opportunities.

“But, again, it was tough. You’re playing against 11 men behind the ball, they try to make it difficult.

“We had to use the wide players and then the guys coming off the bench made a good impact.

“Overall, we can be pleased with the two wins and the two clean sheets.”

For the very first time, the TV stalwart welcomed viewers of Channel 5 —now simply known as 5 —into her brand new pink studio.

Coronation Street legend Helen Flanagan appeared as the first guest on the new lunchtime programme.

She offered candid conversation about her life on the new direct rival to ITV‘s Loose Women.

Later, the pair were joined by showbiz socialite Lizzie Cundy, 56, as they discussed taking saucy selfies and sending them to prospective partners.

The former WAG left Vanessa, 63, absolutely shocked by her surprising admission.

“I don’t want to live like a nun, I want to enjoy myself. I know I’m in the public eye, but I do send pictures,” she admitted.

“I’ve had relationships that are long-distance and it’s the only thing that keeps the sort of flame alive, as it were.”

She added: “Having these pictures, I enjoy it.”

Then, multiple sultry snaps of Lizzie in her bikinis flashed on the screen, much to the surprise of the former Big Breakfast presenter.

“Oh my gosh,” Vanessa exclaimed. “We got pictures, who is that? You?”

The former This Morning star enquired: “Is that clothing?”

Lizzie responded: “I was actually on a beach in Barbados and Bruno Tonioli took one of these.

“I had to take one of him when he had, you know, loads of these y-fronts stuck down the pouch to make him look rather large.”

A shocked Vanessa responded: “Oh no you didn’t!”

Matt Doherty reveals World Cup dream after hitting 50-cap milestone for Republic of Ireland

MATT DOHERTY often wondered would he get to 50 caps – but now he has his sights on a potential tournament swan song.

Doherty, 33, reached his half century on Sunday night against Bulgaria

Matt Doherty has dreams of playing in the World Cup with his country

And given he was 26 before he made his debut and had nine caps by the time he was 28, he acknowledged there were plenty of times when he thought it would never happen.

But what is missing from his Ireland CV now is an appearance at a major tournament, and he knows that next year’s World Cup may be his last chance.

Doherty said: “That’s the one thing you want to do the most.

“I have said it before, that feeling of playing for your country is just hard to match up to it..

“But what it does to the country, the fan base, everything, it brings everyone together, I can only imagine if we get to the World Cup in America.

“Everyone’s family following them around, the support we’d have over there in the stadiums, potentially this campaign could be the last one, so it’s something I would really like to do.”

Ireland’s qualifying campaign begins in September when there will be six-games over a ten-week period, against Portugal, Hungary, and Armenia.

Only top spot secures a spot at the 48-team World Cup, but second place goes into a play-off, with a one-legged semi-finals and final next March to progress.

But despite Ireland’s iffy results over the past number of years, it is not a group that poses much fear given results against all three opponents of late.

Ireland lost 3-0 to Portugal last June, but were better against them in the last World Cup qualifiers while both Armenia and Hungary have lost games in Dublin since then.

Doherty said: “The last game (against Portugal) was the last game before the summer holidays.

“Look, we normally give a good account of ourselves so we’ll be fine against Portugal. 0-0 at home and 2-1 (loss) away, and we were unbelievable in that game.

“They missed a penalty early. So maybe you could say it could have been a draw but we were really very good in that game.

“We’re going to have to make sure we get our points against the teams we’re meant to get our points against.

“We’ve beaten Hungary at home. I think the last time we played them away, did we draw 1-1? (It was 0-0).

“I think in the group, there’s not a huge amount to be fearful of. We should go in there full of confidence, really believing in ourselves. We have a real shot at this.”

Doherty’s belief comes from how Ireland beat Bulgaria home and away in the last week to secure their Nations League B status, despite falling behind in both games.

While conceding first is a recurring issue – the Boys in Green have only scored first in one of Heimir Hallgrímsson’s eight games in charge – they have come back to win three of them.

But Doherty also highlighted how the team is now winning games that are expected now, despite setbacks.

He said: “If we didn’t win (against Bulgaria), there probably would have been people complaining so I think we just have to win the games that we have to win.

“This is important for us for what it is. We went a goal down in both games but managed to come back. These are the types of games that give you some momentum.

“Momentum in football is huge. And let’s see what happens in the summer. We obviously play Senegal and Luxembourg.

“You just want to continue going, winning games going into September. So it’s all about momentum. Keep going, keep winning games, get on a run.

“We heard Bulgaria only lost one in 12 or something before they played us. I mean, why can’t we do something like that?

“Maybe we’re playing against tougher opposition but we feel, especially in the changing room, that we’re capable of doing something like that also.”

And Doherty hopes to remain part of it and add many more caps as he reflected on reaching 50 caps.

He said: “I started very late so to get 50 I am very happy, I have to give a shout out to the managers that helped me get that many caps.

“Mick (McCarthy) and Heimir (Hallgrímsson) the last few games but more importantly Stephen Kenny, he really believed in me from day one.

“I worked with a lot of managers in my time and he was the one that believed in me the most, played me through thick and thin no matter what it was.

“Him and Keith Andrews and Sheasy, he was with him at the time, they deserve a lot of credit from me and I have already told them that.

“Stephen really pushed me, he really thought that I missed out on caps, so he made sure that I caught up and he played me all the time so I have a lot of time for him.”

LATE BLOOMER

Doherty puts his late start down to his club career as Wolves were a yoyo side when he first joined them, and Ireland had Séamus Coleman at right back as well.

He said: “Séamus was flying, there were no complaints really, I just knew I had to bide my time.

“I knew I needed to be playing at a higher level, fortunately Nuno (Santo) came in to Wolves, we got promoted and everything changed for me then.

“I never thought about it that much in the Championship.

“I was just thinking, yeah I am Irish but playing left back at Wolves and we are struggling a bit and not doing  that well, I probably didn’t deserve to get put into any of the squads.

“I don’t know who the full backs were at the time but I am sure they were probably playing at a higher level than me and I am fortunate that things turned around in my mid/late twenties.

“I am 33 now so who knows how many camps or caps I have left.”
