Premier League club set to swoop for Finn Azaz after scouts watch star turn for Ireland vs Bulgaria

CRYSTAL PALACE are keen on signing Ireland star Finn Azaz this summer.

Eagles scouts watched Middlesbrough midfielder Azaz, 24, star for the Boys in Green in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Bulgaria and are now weighing up a bid.

Boro would be reluctant sellers as Azaz has three years left on his contract and is a key player for the promotion chasers.

Michael Carrick’s men are currently in eighth place in the Championship, three points outside the play-off spots with eight games remaining.

Their lofty position is in a large part down to Azaz who has scored ten goals and provided 11 assists from midfield, alerting Premier League teams.

SunSport understands that at least two other top-flight clubs have joined Crystal Palace in the hunt after the Boys in Green hotshot added to his burgeoning reputation across the two Nations League play-off legs against Bulgaria.

Azaz scored his first international goal in what was his fifth Ireland appearance in the away clash in Plovdiv last Thursday.

The playmaker then assisted Evan Ferguson’s equaliser in Dublin on Sunday evening.

His performances over the two showdowns have also cemented his position in Heimir Hallgrimsson’s side having made his debut 12 months ago against Switzerland under then-interim gaffer John O’Shea.

London-born Azaz had long been on Ireland’s radar as he made progress at West Brom and Aston Villa before a loan spell at Plymouth.

Also eligible for England and Israel, he decided his future was with Ireland in 2022.

His father Tim is from Cork, while great uncle Brian Murphy is a Rebels GAA legend.

Azaz made one appearance for the Ireland Under-21s and injury robbed him of a senior call-up in 2023, before he did make his senior breakthrough last year.

Viewers learned Lesley would be leaving the role back in November 2024.

Emmerdale is now laying the groundwork for the long-term character’s departure.

In scenes yet to air, Nicola (Nicola Wheeler) hopes to secure Brenda’s cruise ship tickets for herself and Jimmy (Nick Miles).

Left shocked when Brenda reveals she is going on the cruise alone, Nicola changes tactics.

She instead tries to get herself on board as Brenda’s plus one, offering her support.

When Jimmy realises about the changed situation, he’s put out.

He later tells Pollard (Chris Chittell) there might still be a chance for him and Brenda.

Pollard, who is Brenda’s former partner, bought the tickets last year as a gift for them to enjoy.

However, she ended their romance after Pollard lost her life savings in a cryptocurrency scheme.

Actress Lesley, 69, joined the soap in 2008 and is married to Pollard actor Chris, 76, in real life.

Brenda was first introduced as the adoptive mother to Gennie (Sian Reese-Williams).

Over the years, Brenda’s storylines have included having a brain tumour.

The character was also previously married to Bob Hope (Tony Audenshaw).

Regarding actress Lesley’s exit, a source previously told The Mirror: “There have been so many exits recently and the talk is of more.

Eric Pollard's biggest Emmerdale storylines

By Conor O’Brien

As Emmerdale’s current longest-serving character, Eric Pollard has seen his fair share of drama.

Introduced in 1986, the character was originally portrayed as a villain – but this has been since downplayed.

Here is a look back at some of Eric’s biggest storylines from over the years.

  • Long lost son: Having had an affair with Lydia Halliwell, Eric left unaware that she was pregnant. His son David Metcalfe (Matthew Wolfenden) arrived in the village during 2006 – and ended up staying until 2023.
  • Marriages: Eric has tied the knot on five occasions. His five ex-wives are Eileen Pollock, Elizabeth Feldmann, Dee la Cruz, Gloria Weaver and Val Lambert. Eric’s current partner is Brenda Walker – played by actor Chris Chittell’s real-life wife Lesley Dunlop.
  • Bigamy: Upon marrying Elizabeth in October 1992, she was unaware he was still legally married to first wife Eileen. As a result, he was therefore committing bigamy.
  • Parkinson’s diagnosis: In 2023, Eric left fans heartbroken after it was revealed he’d been diagnosed with Parkinson’s – the fastest growing neurological condition in the world.

“With people like Lesley and Roxy [Shahidi] potentially in the mix, nobody feels safe.

“The show has grown a lot bigger in recent years but soaps are expensive to make.

“It’s inevitable saving money means losing people – but it’s a huge shame all the same for those involved, their friends and colleagues.”

Emmerdale continues on ITV1 and ITVX.

As Christina makes herself at home, tensions rise, and Daisy turns the screw on Jenny, reminding her of the cruel words she once said.

With emotions running high, Daisy delivers a brutal blow – can Jenny ever win back her trust?

Scheming Daisy and Christina ramp up their cruel trick as they keep reeling Jenny in with their fake dating app profile.

Buzzing from her ‘new romance’, Jenny gushes about her mystery man Dom – completely unaware she’s being set up.

The pair up the ante by sending her a bouquet and another flirty message, but Daisy starts to panic – what happens when Jenny wants to meet Dom in real life?

Daisy Midgeley actress Charlotte Jordan has already filmed her final scenes after quitting the soap.

A source said: “Charlotte wrapped her time on the cobbles and had a leaving party recently.

“It was very lowkey as she wanted. She’ll be very missed.”

Since arriving in 2020 Daisy has been part of the soap’s biggest moments including her stalking ordeal and a plot which saw her take over the Rovers with stolen money.

She won the British Soap Award for Best Dramatic Performance after Daisy was the victim of a wedding day acid attack by Justin Rutherford (Andrew Still).

Charlotte, tipped as the next Michelle Keegan, has told sources that despite “loving the show” she is hungry to see what other opportunities await.

The popular star’s exit comes after four actors announced they are quitting or have been written out of the soap since December.

Charlotte said: “It’s been a privilege to be part of a wonderful institution with even more wonderful colleagues who have taught me so much.

“After a brilliant four years for Daisy it’s time for me to start a new chapter and explore other opportunities.”

Corrie cash crisis: shock exits for 2025

ITV bosses are locked in a battle to save the cash-strapped soap.

This means that a number of stars have either been axed from or have abandoned the long-running serial drama.

Colson Smith – Craig Tinker

The character of Craig Tinker has been axed by bosses after 14 years. After he was told of the news in Autumn 2024, Colson Smith confirmed that would be written out of the show with scenes to air later this year. Craig’s on-screen mum, Beth Tinker, also left the show in the summer when actress Lisa George was written out from the role.

Sue Cleaver – Eileen Grimshaw

After 25 years playing Eileen Grimshaw, former I’m A Celebrity campmate Sue Cleaver will quit the show. The Sun on Sunday reported in January that she’s already begun to film her exit scenes. However the character will not be killed off in case Sue opts to make a return in the future.

Luca Toolan – Mason Radcliffe

Bosses decided to axe the teenage character after just 16 months after he first joined the show. Recent scenes saw Mason stabbed by his criminal brothers after his pal Dylan brought a knife in an attempt to defend him.

Sue Devaney – Debbie Webster

In November 2024, we revealed that Debbie Webster is set to be killed off after 40 years on the cobbles. The character will die as part of a heartbreaking long-running dementia storyline.

Charlotte Jordan – Daisy Midgeley

The actress became the fifth star to leave Coronation Street in just one month. We revealed that she will bow out of the ITV soap later this year after four years on-screen. Charlotte told sources that she’s hungry to see what other opportunities await.

Shelley King – Yasmeen Metcalfe

The actress has played Yasmeen Metcalfe on the cobbles for the past 11 years and we revealed in January that she finished filming her final scenes. This follows the departure of her on-screen partner Stu Carpenter.

ITV soaps Corrie and Emmerdale have seen budgets slashed recently.

Corrie boss Kate Brooks warned she will be axing characters including “some unexpected ones that will send shockwaves”.

Colson Smith (Craig Tinker), Sue Cleaver (Eileen Grimshaw), Luca Toolan (Mason Radcliffe) and Sue Devaney (Debbie Webster) are quitting or have been written out.

But with the soap also cutting down on episodes, will there be more axes to come?

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 or stream from 7am on ITVX.

I’d call them a tribute band – I sang the hits, blasts iconic 80s frontman in new swipe after ‘sour grapes’ split

UB40 legend Ali Campbell has labelled his former group “a tribute band” as he promised an “all thrillers” set on his return to Ireland later this year.

The Birmingham reggae icon will headline Big Day Out at the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick on August 24.

Now performing as UB40 featuring Ali Campbell, while his ex-bandmates still use the original name, the singer said there was sadly nothing but “sour grapes” between the feuding sides.

And he revealed he turned down an offer to once again team up with his former bandmates following the 2021 death of Astro, who quit UB40 following Ali’s departure to join forces with his friend.

Speaking exclusively to The Irish Sun, 66-year-old Ali revealed that in 2008 he quit the iconic band he started after they refused to allow him time off to promote his first solo album.

And despite trading under the original UB40 name, he described them as nothing more than a “tribute band”.

He said: “It’s all sour grapes, it’s all gone rather horrible. I’d call them a tribute band. Now there’s a few original members with them.

“But you know they haven’t got the original singer. I’m the man who sang all the hits. So yeah, they’re a tribute band – and I think there are better tribute bands out there anyway.”

He described the offer to rejoin the original band following Astro’s death as “disgusting”.

Ali said: “That was awful. That left a hole that will never be filled.

“The week that Astro died money was offered for me to go back, which I thought was pretty disgusting — and I said no, obviously.”

Asked what his relationship was like with his brothers Robin, who was with him in UB40 from the beginning in 1978, and Duncan, who replaced him as the singer for a period, Ali said: “I don’t have one. Of course it is (disappointing), but that’s just the way things have panned out.”

Ali has a long history of performing in Ireland with UB40 and as a solo artist, having recorded in Windmill Lane Studios in the 1980s and supporting Bob Dylan at Slane Castle in 1984.

He said: “The Irish crowds have always been more raucous. They love going to gigs. I love playing in Ireland. We’ve had some standout gigs there.

“Slane Castle stands out in my memory as one of the good ones.

“I remember everybody jumping in the water and us getting very worried that somebody might have a mishap, or we might drown, or something, because it was a riotous crowd.

‘WE LOVED IT’

“We loved it. We loved the reaction, but we were a bit worried about people’s safety jumping in the water.

“Irish people just enjoy the craic. They like to dance and we’ve always gone down great in Ireland. We’ve also had many great nights in the Point in Dublin.”

His fans are sure to be in for a blistering set when he takes to the stage in Limerick.

Ali said: “We’ll be doing a greatest hits set. We’re not self-indulgent, we don’t do new stuff that they wouldn’t know. We do everything. All winners, no fillers, all thrillers.”

  • Tickets for UB40 featuring Ali Campbell are available from the usual outlets.

Vicki Fowler returns with shocking news about Spencer Moon in EastEnders – and she’s hiding a huge secret

VICKI Fowler returns to EastEnders with some shocking news about Spencer Moon – and she’s also hiding a huge secret.

Martin Fowler, played by James Bye, passed away with a heartbroken and distraught Stacey Slater by his side in the soap’s exciting yet tragic anniversary special earlier this month.

Now as the BBC soap airs his funeral, there’s a blast from the past set to rejoin Albert Square.

Vicki Fowler will set foot in Walford for the first time in over 20 years to attend her Uncle Martin’s funeral, bringing her new boyfriend Ross and his son Joel with her.

As the love child of teen mum Michelle Fowler and Dirty Den Watts, Vicki’s life has been beset with drama from day one.

But since leaving the Square in 2004, Vicki has been living in Australia with long-term love Spencer Moon, where they ran a bar.

So, when she arrives in Walford with a new man on her arm, it comes as quite the shock to sister Sharon and Spencer’s brother Alfie.

Next week, Sharon’s attention soon turns to Vicki’s new partner Ross and his son Joel.

Vicki explains she has returned for Martin’s funeral before revealing that she and Spencer have separated.

Having learnt of Vicki’s return from Zack, Alfie and Kat head to Sharon’s but they are shocked when Spencer is nowhere to be seen.

Kat questions Vicki on her versions of events, and it’s not long before the true reason behind the breakup is revealed.

In a later episode, Ross and Vicki are in the café and he urges her to ask Sharon for money.

But after a chat with Kathy about Sharon’s recent heartaches, Vicki rethinks and turns her interest to Ian Beale instead.

At Beales Eels, Vicki lies about her debt and asks Ian for a loan.

But later, at the Boxing Den, Sharon accosts Vicki after being informed by Ian, but Vicki quickly dismisses her concerns.

And later in the week, tensions continue to rise between Sharon and Vicki but Linda gives Sharon some food for thought.

Soap characters who've been recast

Soap operas are staple viewing for many people, but even some of the most famous characters have been played by different actors. Here are some examples from over the years.

Coronation Street

  • Tracy Barlow: Kate Ford took on the role of Corrie legend Tracy Barlow in 2002. Before Kate, three other actresses had played Tracy – most notably Dawn Acton from 1988 to 1999.
  • Nick Tilsley: Ben Price has been playing Gail’s oldest child in 2009, but the former Footballers’ Wives star is the third actor to take on the part.
  • Sarah Platt: Although Tina O’Brien debuted as Sarah Platt in 1999, she is the third actress who has played the iconic role of Sarah Platt.
  • David Platt: Completing the line-up of Gail’s children, David was initially played by Thomas Ormson for a decade before Jack P. Shepherd took over.
  • Daniel Osbourne: For almost a decade, the role of Ken Barlow’s son Daniel has been portrayed by actor Rob Mallard. Before Rob joined, two other actors had previously played Daniel.
  • Bethany Platt: Fans know Lucy Fallon as Bethany nowadays but before her, three other actresses had stepped into the character’s shoes.
  • Kirk Sutherland: Before Andy Whyment took on the role of Kirk, he played by an uncredited actor in his very first appearance.
  • Todd Grimshaw: Gareth Pierce stepped into the role of Todd back in 2020, becoming the second performer to play this part.
  • Summer Spellman: Harriet Bibby became the second actress to play Summer, taking over the role from Matilda Freeman in 2020.
  • Ryan Connor: Ryan Prescott currently plays the long-running character, but Ben Thompson and Sol Heras had earlier portrayed the role.

EastEnders

  • Martin Fowler: Although Martin was the first baby born on-screen in EastEnders, he hasn’t always been played by the same person. His current portrayer, James Bye, is the third actor to star as the character.
  • Peter Beale: Seven actors have portrayed Ian Beale’s elder son, with the current actor, Thomas Law, in his second stint as the character.
  • Ben Mitchell: Ben has been played by a total of six actors – with Max Bowden bowing out of the role in March 2024.
  • Bobby Beale: Before Clay Milner Russell, Ian’s younger son had been played by four other actors.
  • Freddie Slater: Bobby’s best mate, Freddie Slater, had been previously played by twins Alex and Tom Kilby before Bobby Brazier took over in 2022.
  • Chelsea Fox: Former Coronation Street actress Zaraah Abrahams took over the role of Chelsea in 2020. The character had been first played by Tiana Benjamin from 2006 to 2010.
  • Lauren Branning: Jacqueline Jossa took on the role of Lauren in 2010, succeeding Madeline Duggan who’d played her from 2006 to 2010.
  • Johnny Carter: Johnny has been played by three actors since debuting in 2013 – most recently, Charlie Suff has taken on the role.

Whilst soap fans may remember Vicki as the fresh faced younger sister of Sharon and brother Dennis, played by actress Scarlett Alice Johnson.

The Vicki Fowler of 2025 comes with a new actress to EastEnders, as Rain Dogs actor Alice Haig takes on the part of Vicki Fowler.

Speaking recently of her role as Vicki, Alice Haig said: “I am so excited. I have always watched the show, and I was born in February 1985, so I’m the same age as EastEnders!

“It’s so cool to be playing a character like Vicki – we think we know her, but a lot has changed. I can’t wait for all the Albert Square drama ahead.”
