1 week agoViral XComments Off on I tried Aldi Ireland’s €1.99 Easter munch bag with lots of goodies to try out – here’s how I rated it
WITH Easter only a few weeks away, I’m on the hunt to find the country’s best supermarket treats for the season.
And I was extremely surprised by Aldi Ireland’s new Easter Munch Mix that costs a bargain €1.99.
Journalist CollectI tried Aldi Ireland’s Easter Munch Mix that’s in stores nationwide now[/caption]
Aldi IrelandPriced at only €1.99, it’s the perfect buy this Easter[/caption]
Journalist CollectAnd the bargain buy comes with a whole range of goodies for the season[/caption]
For the majority of shoppers this Easter, the most important thing is picking out chocolate eggs – but I wanted to see what other options were available.
On the hunt for goods, Aldi’s new Easter Munch Mix seemed like the perfect option for those looking for something other than eggs.
The packaging itself makes it a real standout on the shelves.
It’s full of colourful designs that make you think it was made by the Easter bunny himself.
A dupe of those sold in M&S, it comes with a whole load of goodies for the season – including popcorn, pretzels, malt balls, chocolate beans and mini eggs.
The packaging reads: “A mix of toffee flavoured popcorn, salted pretzels, with milk chocolate coated malt balls, milk chocolate beans and milk chocolate mini eggs.”
Starting off, I tried Aldi’s mini eggs.
These goods were absolutely delicious – on par with the originals, the colourful shell mixed with the chocolate left a great taste in my mouth.
Up next, I tried the salted pretzels in the Munch Mix.
Although I’m not the biggest pretzel fan, they had a great salted flavour – and when tried with chocolate, it left me coming back for more.
The chocolate beans and malt balls were the next thing I tried – and I was not disappointed.
The malt centre has this toasty, almost biscuit-like flavour, and the chocolate on the outside is rich and creamy, making it a perfect combo.
The chocolate tastes of a higher quality compared to others found in the retailer, and I could easily eat a whole bag of these alone in one sitting.
Lastly, I tried the toffee flavoured popcorn.
Acting like a pallet cleanser from all of the chocolate I devoured, the toffee coating is super sugary and smooth, while the popcorn itself is light and crispy.
And when you try it with the chocolate, you get that satisfying crunch and then a sweet, melt-in-your-mouth toffee flavour.
Without a doubt, you get far more than you bargained for in the Munch Mix, and I struggled to finish the bag in one go.
With fantastic packaging and a range of Easter goodies all at a bargain price, I would rate Aldi’s Easter Munch a solid 8/10.
Wrapped in gold foil with a red ribbon collar and a gold bell, the Swiss chocolate bunny always goes down a treat.
But many shops also sell their own versions, creating their own dupe bunnies, with prices from €2.49.
THE HISTORY OF ALDI
The German discount supermarket chain came to Ireland in 1999.
Aldi’s first few shops opened in November 1999, with locations in Sandyford, Dublin, and Ballincollig, Cork.
By the mid-2000s, Aldi bosses had opened numerous stores, focusing on providing high-quality products at low prices.
As the recession hit 2008-2012, Aldi’s popularity grew as consumers became more price-conscious.
The supermarket giant continued it’s expansion in Ireland between 2013-2018, while refurbishing existing stores.
By 2018, Aldi had over 130 shops throughout the country.
The chain began to focus on expanding its range of Irish-made products and supporting local producers.
In 2023, Aldi had over 140 stores in Ireland.
The store invested in sustainability initiatives, such as reducing plastic packaging and increasing the availability of organic and eco-friendly products.
Aldi chiefs said: “At Aldi we are committed to supporting Irish suppliers. Developed in partnership with Bord Bia, Grow with Aldi is designed to help the very best Irish suppliers develop their brand.
“To date, we’ve invested €10 million in our Grow with Aldi development programme in a bid to find the very best Irish suppliers.
“As a result, for a limited time only there are over 47 new products, from 27 Irish suppliers available in store.”
Aldi have introduced technological advancements with self-checkout systems and contactless payment options.

IRELAND AM hosts were all left in stitches as Tommy Bowe made a shock admission on air.
The Virgin Media star returned on screens this week alongside Alan Hughes and Muireann O’Connell for their usual telly laughs.

VMTVTommy, Alan and Muireann were all in stitches at their viewers’ emails[/caption]
Yesterday, the hosts talked about Alice Wilkinson’s book How to Stay Sane in a House Share, and asked viewers to send in their anecdotes.
One viewer, Karen, revealed that she came home one day to find her Australian housemate’s jeans hanging over the cooking rings to dry them.
Tommy related to the dilemma and admitted: “We used to dry out stuff in the oven.”
The rugby star’s co-hosts looked completely dumbfounded as Muireann shouted: “No you didn’t!”
Alan asked: “Would they not burn?”
Tommy replied: “Well you wouldn’t keep them on for long, you’d have them on low heat. But the smell…”
Muireann pressed Tommy further on the logistics saying: “Why wouldn’t you put on the heating.”
Tommy explained: “Well we didn’t actually have heating in that house at the time.”
Later on in the programme, they read out another viewer’s story that said when her housemate spilled liquid on the floor, he’d remove their shoe and wipe it up with his sock.
And Alan laughed a little too hard at the message as he was also guilty of doing the same.
He said: “Hands up… now, I’ve done that.”
Last week Tommy and Muireann were forced to apologise after a series of live blunders.
The pair sat down with Elaina Ryan, who’s the CEO of Children’s Books Ireland, to showcase a variety of kids books.
Muireann introduced the segment and mistakingly said “source” instead of “stories”.
LIVE BLUNDER
The Limerick native was quick to correct herself saying: “Now from interactive source.. I’ll try that again, interactive stories to suspense-filled reads.”
The popular presenter made a dig at herself as she added: “We’ve got a range of reading recommendations for your children this morning who will be able to read better than I can.
“Let’s be perfectly frank. Get them reading earlier than me.”
Tommy replied: “Better than me, I hope.”
During the segment, Tommy read out of the books as “Mary Murphy’s Forever Friends”.
Elaina rectified the mistake and she responded: “Friends Forever is a fabulous book.”
Tommy and Muireann burst out laughing and put their hands over their face in shame.

A NEWBORN baby is fighting for his life after being overdosed by medics at a hospital in Glasgow.
Heartbroken parents Ahad Ul Hassan and Hira Mansoor have had their “lives turned upside down” after their little boy Zohan was given ten times more paracetamol than he should have by medical staff.
SUPPLIEDBaby Zohan was given the wrong dosage of medication by hospital staff[/caption]
SUPPLIEDParents Ahad Ul Hassan and Hira Mansoor are now ‘praying for a miracle’[/caption]
AlamyThe incident happened at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow[/caption]
The tot, who is just eight weeks old, was accidentally given the super-high dosage after he was admitted to the Royal Hospital for Children for surgery to repair a hernia last week.
Zohan was born seven weeks premature when Hira, 27, underwent an emergency c-section on January 24.
But he started showing signs of a hernia at just six weeks old and doctors operated on him to fix it at the beginning of March.
The first-time parents, from Ayr, then noticed that Zohan’s stomach had begun to swell a week later on March 16 and they took him to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock.
Doctors revealed that Zohan appeared to have developed another hernia on his right side and he was blue-lighted to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow.
The youngster was scheduled to have another operation to fix it on March 18.
It’s heartbreaking – it’s just a horrible thing to go through with our baby
But dad Ahad, 26, got a phone call telling him to “leave his work immediately” and come to the hospital after his son had been overdosed on medication.
He was told that medical staff gave his son 200mg of paracetamol instead of the required 20mg.
Ahad explained that when he arrived at the hospital his son’s heart rate skyrocketed to 200 beats per minute and was struggling to cry.
Doctors quickly began taking samples of Zohan’s blood and gave him an antidote to stop the effects of the poison.
But the heartbroken dad said he “doesn’t know how this could happen” to his baby, who weighed just 5lbs.
After he was overdosed, little Zohan began to convulse and the worried dad filmed his son’s next fit the following day.
When hospital staff watched the clip, the tot was quickly moved to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and was put on a ventilator.
Zohan has been on life support in a level of unconsciousness ever since and suffered a swelling on the brain after being poisoned.
Doctors have said they are currently unable to predict the outcome and explained that Zohan might now have irreversible brain damage or problems with his vision.
It’s shocking, it’s turned our lives upside down. We just wanted to go home after a straightforward surgery… We’re just praying he gets better
Ahad told the Scottish Sun that their lives have been “turned upside down” and they are now “praying for a miracle”.
The couple are currently staying in accommodation near the hospital and have been by Zohan’s side every single day.
The devastated dad said: “It’s heartbreaking – it’s just a horrible thing to go through with our baby. A young doctor did this.
“Yesterday me and my wife spoke to the director of the hospital and he said the hospital doesn’t want to name names but they are taking accountability for what happened.
“It’s shocking, it’s turned our lives upside down. We just wanted to go home after a straightforward surgery. We didn’t want any of this.
What is poisoning and what are the signs/symptoms?
THE NHS has described poisoning as when a person is exposed to a substance that can damage their health or endanger their life.
This includes when a child is overdosed on medication.
The NHS says: “Most cases of poisoning happen at home, and children under 5 have the highest risk of accidental poisoning.”
Signs and symptoms of poisoning
The symptoms of poisoning will depend on the type of poison and the amount taken in, but general things to look out for include:
being sick
stomach pains
confusion
drowsiness and fainting fits
If a child suddenly develops these symptoms, they may have been poisoned, particularly if they’re drowsy and confused
“We’re just praying he gets better.
“It’s been almost a week we still don’t know what’s going to happen and doctors also don’t know – they’re trying to wake him up and see how reacts.”
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) have now launched an investigation into the incident and apologised to Ahad, Hira and their family.
NHSGCC provided the young family with their current accommodation and said they are supporting them in every way they can.
Dr Claire Harrow, NHSGGC Deputy Medical Director for Acute Services, told the Scottish Sun: “We would like to sincerely apologise to the family of baby Zohan Ul Hassan.
“We are continuing to deliver the best possible care for Zohan and we continue to offer support to his family at this distressing time.
“We have launched a full investigation into this incident and his family will be fully informed of and involved in this process as it continues.”

A LABOUR minister today slammed Rachel Reeves over her “inappropriate” freebie grabs.
Fury at the Chancellor accepting gifted tickets to Sabrina Carpenter and the National Theatre hit boiling point as Matthew Pennycook suggested the moves were unfitting of a Cabinet member.

The Housing Minister told LBC: “I don’t personally think it’s appropriate.
“If I want to go to a concert at the O2 I’ll pay for it.
“But individual MPs, individual ministers make their own decisions.”
He added: “I think that the important thing is that everything is declared and above board, so individual people can make their choices as to whether they think it’s appropriate to take tickets on occasions.
“I personally haven’t done, as I said, at the O2, and wouldn’t do.”
On Sunday Ms Reeves defended accepting free tickets to the Espresso star’s gig, claiming it was for security reasons.
The Chancellor said she went to the O2 Arena concert with a family member and insisted it was “the right thing to do” given her security needs.
She told the BBC: “I do now have security, which means it’s not as easy as it would have been in the past to just sit in a concert, although probably a lot easier for everyone concerned.
“So look, I took those tickets to go with a member of my family.
“I think that was the right thing to do from a security aspect.”
Asked whether she paid for the tickets, Ms Reeves said: “These weren’t tickets that you could pay for, so there wasn’t a price.
“Obviously there was a price, but they weren’t tickets you were able to buy.”
Reports of Ms Reeves’ enjoyment of corporate hospitality earlier this month, said to have been provided by AEG, sparked a backlash from Labour MPs unhappy with welfare cuts.
It also comes after Labour faced growing scrutiny over ministers accepting freebies – with Sir Keir Starmer and other Cabinet figures previously blasted for taking Taylor Swift tickets and luxury gifts.
The Chancellor is paid £158,851 per year.
She previously vowed shw would not accept clothing from donors after it was that she had received £7,500 worth of clothes in opposition, paid for by Labour’s Lord Ali.
This morning Tory leader Kemi Badenoch took a dig at Ms Reeves as she revealed she hasn’t accepted any freebie tickets to gigs in her role.
Asked if she has accepted any gifts as opposition chief, Ms Badenoch told TalkTV: “For things like concerts and so on, no not really.
“I get donations to help me with my job.
“So people give money and I can use it to pay for things, like transport, hiring other people, services and so on.”

An inquest heard how the mum was discovered lying on her back in the lounge by police.
A post mortem found she died from a “gunshot wound to left chest, involving heart and left lung”.
Pontypridd Coroner’s Court was told Joanne was declared dead at the scene.
The mum-of-four was born in Aberdare but was of “no fixed abode” at the time of her death.
Senior coroner Graeme Hughes said Joanne’s death clearly involved “violence” as he adjourned the inquest.
A full hearing will take place pending the ongoing criminal proceedings.
Six people have been charged in connection with the horror – including five accused of murder.
They have been remanded into custody ahead of a provisional trial in October.
Paying tribute to Joanne, her family said: “We are devastated by the tragic loss of our beloved Joanne.
“She was a daughter, mother, sister, and niece – loved deeply by all who knew her. Her kindness, strength, and love for her family will never be forgotten.
“During this incredibly difficult time, we ask for privacy as we grieve and begin to process this unimaginable loss.
“We appreciate the support and condolences from the community and kindly request that our family be given the space to mourn in peace.
