JOSH VAN DER FLIER believes Ireland’s ability to stay calm in the chaos has given them the belief that they can win it all.

Ireland won the Triple Crown after seeing off Wales on Saturday and are one win away from a third Championship in a row if results go their way in a fortnight’s time.

They are also two wins from a second Grand Slam in three years.

But the third victory of the campaign was the hardest yet as Ireland played with 14 men for 20 minutes after Garry Ringrose was red-carded.

With Wales’ confidence up and the closed roof in Cardiff raising the temperature and noise levels, it could have been chaotic.

But Ireland scored 17 unanswered points to earn the Triple Crown after prior wins over England and Scotland.

Van der Flier said: “It was very calm in the dressing room. There was nothing panicked about it. It was very calm.

“It was very clear. We knew what we needed to do and thankfully we managed to do it.

“It’s something that we talk about a lot about. In rugby, especially when you’re playing away from home, there’s a lot of chaos going on outside.

“But you need to be fairly calm and it needs to be quite relaxed and calm among the team.

“Obviously on the outside it’s absolute chaos, it’s noisy and it’s a lot of things are happening.

“So I’m very pleased with how the lads dealt with it all because it was a messy.”

And he insisted winning when it is chaotic gives Ireland the belief they can beat France and then Italy to claim another Slam.

The flanker added: “There’s an expectation. Every team goes into a tournament to win it.

“But, particularly in this group, I think that the lads genuinely believe they’re going to do it.

“There’s a huge belief in the group that we can be the best team in the world and that we can win every competition we enter.”

IT MAY be tempting to get back into gardening ahead of spring, but according to experts there’s one job that you should be avoiding before March.

While your lawn might not be at its best during winter months, Chris Ware local gardening expert at Climbing Wild Gardeners, advises against reaching for the lawnmower just yet.

“Mowing your lawn when the grass is damp or wet can cause long-term damage to both your lawn and your equipment,” he explains. 

“Wet grass doesn’t cut cleanly; it tears, leaving the edges jagged. This makes the lawn more susceptible to diseases and pests.”

Ware also warns that the clippings from wet grass tend to clump together, smothering the healthy grass underneath. 

“What you’re left with is a patchy, uneven finish that can take months to recover,” he says.

It’s not just the grass that suffers—your mower does too. “Cutting wet grass puts unnecessary strain on your lawnmower, dulling the blades faster and overworking the motor. 

“Waiting until the grass is dry helps maintain both the lawn’s health and your gardening equipment.”

While mowing is off the table, Ware suggests other ways to care for your lawn during the winter months. 

“Aerating your lawn is a simple yet effective way to keep it healthy,” he says. “It improves drainage, reduces compaction, and ensures the grass gets the air it needs to recover and grow stronger come spring.”

Preparing your lawnmower now will also set you up for success. “Winter is the perfect time to check the blades and ensure everything is in working order,” Ware advises. 

“A sharp blade will make clean cuts, helping the lawn heal faster and reducing the risk of diseases.”

By avoiding winter mowing and focusing on essential maintenance, Ware says you’ll give your lawn the best chance to thrive.

“Patience and a little preparation go a long way in ensuring a lush, green garden once the warmer weather returns.”

SIR JIM RATCLIFFE has introduced another round of cuts to the Manchester United training ground – this time involving the food served in the canteen.

The billionaire has made a host of changes behind the scenes at United since taking over last February.

Over 250 staff members have been axed, with many more set to follow in the coming weeks and months.

Ratcliffe also cancelled the club’s annual Christmas party, raised ticket prices and cut funding for a charity helping former players.

And his latest attempt to save money has seen him limit the lunch options in the training ground canteen to just soup and sandwiches for everybody except first-team players.

Furthermore, Man Utd U18s were denied the chance to play at Old Trafford in the FA Youth Cup fifth round.

Traditionally, the match would have been staged at United’s main home, but instead it was played at the 12,000-capacity Leigh Sports Village, saving the club a total of £8,000.

Man Utd currently sit 15th in the Premier League table, only above West Ham on goal difference.

Ruben Amorim recently admitted that he is managing the “worst Man Utd team” in history.

The Red Devils salvaged a point at Goodison Park at the weekend after going 2-0 down against Everton.

After the match, head coach Amorim admitted he does not know how to fix the club’s current crisis.

He said: “I don’t know what I need to do to bring more consistency. If I knew, I would change it.

“We have to continue to think in the next game, everything we do in the week we have to use it in the game.

“If we do that, we are near to winning games like we did in the second half. In this moment we need to focus on day by day. We need to survive this season, and then to think ahead. We have so many problems.

“Then when we go to the game and let the time pass, it’s really hard. I don’t want to just say the negative part, the second half was so much better in the belief. In the end we were near to winning this game.”

Lucy Holmes took silver in 4:23.10, with Amy O’Donoghue on the podium in third after clocking 4:23.74.

And Healy said: “It felt pretty good out there.

“But it was weird to run out there on my own and I’m happy with the time.

“I don’t get to race at home too much so it’s fun to get to see everyone and for my mum to get to see me race.”

Elsewhere, 400m star Sharlene Mawdsley retained her title with 51.91 at a sold-out Sport Ireland Arena in Dublin. Phil Healy came second with a time of 53.25 — edging Rachel McCann for the silver.

And Mawdsley said: “I felt strong out there and I avoided traffic at the break.

“I’ll reset but my focus is on the European indoors and I’m excited for that.”

There was drama in the short sprints with Bori Akinola getting the better of Israel Olatunde in the men’s 60m.

Max O’Reilly split the pair for silver with 6.69 after Akinola claimed gold inside 6.61.

Olatunde had to settle for bronze in 6.72.

Clonliffe’s Cathal Doyle retained his national 1500m title in 3:58.10. Lughaidh Mallon was second, with Brhane Gebrebrhan third.

But the rising stars of 400m running stole the show in today’s men’s final.

Teenager Conor Kelly, 17, clocked a new Under-20 national record to take gold in 46.54.

David Bosch was second with a time of 47.54 with Sean Doggett just behind.

The women’s 60m final saw Sarah Leahy regain the sprint title in 7.39.

She finished ahead of a resurgent Ciara Neville who looked to be returning to the form that saw her claim the 2020 title on the back of an injury-plagued few seasons.

Sive O’Toole rounded out the podium in third in 7.52.

Sean Tobin and James Gormley produced one of the finishes of the day in the men’s 3,000m.

Tobin was first to make his move and held on superbly to cross in a winning time of 8:09. 18 from Gormley in second in 8:09.19.

Calum Morgan completed the podium in third in 8:11.27.

Roisin Flanagan ran away from the field to take the women’s 3,000m title in a winning time of 9:13.51.

Ide Ni Dhomhaill came second with 9:21.45, as last year’s silver medallist Niamh Kearney took bronze in 9:27.95.
