Good Morning Britain host Ranvir Singh apologises for failing to mention Jews as victims of the Holocaust

GOOD Morning Britain host Ranvir Singh has issued an apology after failing to mention Jews as being victims of the Holocaust.

The broadcaster sparked fury amongst viewers following the “baffling” mistake during the ITV show’s coverage of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau on Monday.

Holocaust Memorial Day celebrates the closing of the Nazis’ biggest death camp by Allied forces on January 27 1945.

During a news segment, Ms Singh, 47, reported how King Charles was due to become the first British monarch to visit the site as part of a special service.

However, when listing the victims of the death camps, she mentioned a number of targeted groups, but failed to include those of the Jewish faith – the group which suffered the largest number of deaths.

Ms Singh said: “Six million people were killed in concentration camps during the Second World War, as well as millions of others because they were Polish, disabled, gay or belonged to another ethnic group.”

The Campaign Against Antisemitism shared the clip on X and blasted the host for her omission, saying it “truly beggars belief”, adding it was “dire reporting”.

It went on to say: “Additionally, there is bafflingly no utterance of the word ‘antisemitism’ whatsoever.

“If this is intended to pay respect to the victims of Holocaust Memorial Day, it has failed abysmally and ignores the true nature of this horrific event.”

The group said during an entire two-minute segment on the anniversary, which included cutting away from Ms Singh to correspondent Nick Dixon live from Auschwitz, there was only one mention of Jews.

It referred to former history students taking a tour of the Jewish quarter of Kraków but failed to contextualise the significance.

In an apology today, Ms Singh said: “In yesterday’s news, when we reported on the memorial events in Auschwitz, we said six million people were killed in the Holocaust but crucially failed to say they were Jewish. That was our mistake, which we apologise for.”

“In our studio introduction to the report on the 80th anniversary of Auschwitz we failed to acknowledge the Jewish community which we have since apologised for live on air in today’s programme,” ITV said in a statement.

“This failure was done in error, however clear reference to Jewish people in the correspondent news report from Auschwitz immediately followed, as well as a further extended programme report referencing the six million Jewish victims.

“Yesterday’s programme also included a live studio interview with a survivor of Auschwitz, Rachel Levy alongside Olivia Marks-Woldman, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Memorial Trust, both of whom talked candidly about their own experiences as Jewish people.”

HOLOCAUST

More than a million people were murdered by the Nazis at the site during the Second World War.

They comprised mostly of Jews, but also Poles, Soviet prisoners of war and other nationalities were killed as part of the Holocaust.

In total, more than six million Jewish men, women and children were killed.

The camp was finally liberated by soldiers of the 60th Army of the First Ukrainian Front.

Yesterday, King Charles, 76, walked through the entrance to the camp to mark the anniversary after hearing harrowing stories from Holocaust survivors.

He was joined by fellow monarchs including Spain‘s King Felipe and Queen Letizia, Belgium‘s King Philippe and Queen Mathilde, Norway‘s Crown Prince Haakon, and Sweden‘s Crown Princess Victoria.

Charles initially visited the Jewish Community Centre, also meeting volunteers and wellwishers, as well as unveiling a plaque.

During a speech, Charles said the testimony of survivors teaches us to “never be a bystander in the face of violence and hate”.

He went on to say, remembering the “evils of the past remains a vital task”, and knowledge should be used to inspire people to “build a kinder and more compassionate world”.

He described the anniversary as a “sombre and indeed a sacred moment”.

It comes as Princess Kate joined husband Prince William to pay tribute to the six million Jews who died during one of humanity’s darkest hours at an event in London yesterday.

William gave a reading and lit a candle at a moving ceremony.

The Sun has approached ITV and the Jewish Leadership Council for comment.

Six million people were killed in concentration camps during the Second World War, as well as millions of others because they were Polish, disabled, gay, or belonged to another ethnic group.

Jews. The word you’re looking for is ‘Jews’, not ‘people’. This truly beggars belief.

This dire reporting is not only factually incorrect but erases Jews from a genocide in which six million Jewish men, women and children were slaughtered specifically because they were Jews.

How is it possible, therefore, that on Holocaust Memorial Day of all days, @GMB manages to acknowledge several other groups but not Jews?

To make matters worse, there is no reference to Jewish people at all for over two minutes into this segment, and when there finally is one, it is only done once and in regard to former history students taking a tour of the Jewish quarter of Kraków.

Additionally, there is bafflingly no utterance of the word “antisemitism” whatsoever. If this is intended to pay respect to the victims of Holocaust Memorial Day, it has failed abysmally and ignores the true nature of this horrific event.

How on earth was this allowed to happen, @ITV? We demand an explanation.

The abandoned tube station that was turned into a Chinese restaurant… where trains made the chopsticks vibrate

AN 156-year tube station once decided to scrap trains in favour of Chinese food.

Marlborough Road was once a busy tube station in North London where you could catch the Metropolitan line.

It first opened in 1868 as an extension of Baker Street on the crossroads between Finchley Road and Queen’s Grove.

Marlborough Road started out as a single track station and had old steam trains pulling in.

The pilot men, who were tasked with guiding the train into the station, had to jump from one platform to another to switch services.

The steam train was eventually replaced by electric vehicles and two tracks.

It served as a stop on the Metropolitan line for over 70 years.

However, by 1914, the tube station reduced the opening hours as people in the area opted for the bus instead.

Following the creation of the more convenient stop of St John’s Wood, Marlborough Road suffered less and less traffic until it completely closed in 1939.

Some of the station’s only peak times were during cricket season because it’s so close to Lord’s Cricket Ground.

Marlborough Road is also a minute away from Abbey Road studios, where The Beatles wrote their White album.

After its closure, the tube station wasn’t left vacant for long and had various businesses use the building.

At one point, it served as a doctors surgery, it was also transformed into a steak restaurant in the seventies.

The building was also home to a Chinese restaurant called Royal China.

It was reported that diners’ chopsticks would vibrate as trains travelled on the tracks beneath them.

Now, it’s used as a power station that helps boost the line it was once a part of.

Another change is that street Marlborough Road was named after doesn’t exist. Marlborough Road has since been renamed, Marlborough Place.

There are remnants of the old station that still remain though.

You can see a portion of the platform, as well as the curve of the old roof, from Finchley Road.

Here are five abandoned train stations around the world that are now hotels.

Wrexham stadium expansion update as architects ‘plan to create a real cauldron’ for new 5,500 capacity stand

ARCHITECTS behind Wrexham’s stadium expansion are planning to “create a real cauldron” as work continues on a new 5,500-capacity stand.

Welsh side Wrexham have gone from strength to strength under the ownership of Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

Wrexham are hoping to achieve promotion to the Championship this season[/caption]

After starting off in the National League, they now sit third in League One and are dreaming of another successive promotion – this time to the Championship.

But as Wrexham climb the rankings, they are also looking to grow their stadium at the same time.

The Racecourse Ground is the world’s oldest international stadium after hosting Wales’ first-ever game in 1877.

And it currently holds 12,000 fans as the club builds a new 5,500 stand for their Kop end.

Once completed, it will replace a temporary stand holding 2,000 supporters and will take the Racecourse Ground’s capacity to 15,000.

Plans are already afoot though to grow the arena into a 55,000 seater behemoth, dwarfing current Premier League stadiums including Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge.

Now, the architects behind Wembley Stadium, Tottenham’s £1billion home and the Las Vegas Sphere have lifted the lid on what the atmosphere will be like once the new Kop stand is in place.

Populous’ global director Declan Sharkey revealed it will “create a real cauldron” at the Racecourse Ground, enabling Wrexham fans to truly show off their support.

But the creation of the stand will also allow the club to easily continue adding and building more room as they continue to make strides.

Sharkey told The Athletic: “I genuinely believe this design would only work in Wrexham.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have worked wonders in Wales[/caption]

“When looking at the Kop stand, the plan was to create a real cauldron. We explored acoustic design, our in-house team going into a lot of detail to ensure that the noise will be like no other.

“As a League One stadium, which it is at the moment, the atmosphere is incredible. But what the new stand will do is lift that up a couple of notches again.

“The focus right now is on the Kop stand. But a big part of our design process was considering the rest of the stadium. How it could be expanded or modified in the future.

“All constraints will truly give the Kop stand a unique identity along with the rest of the stadium as we develop it.”

Meet Man Utd target Dorgu who has ‘never been injured in seven years’ and scored with first touch on international debut

PATRICK DORGU could be the answer to Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United conundrum.

Amorim was determined to implement his favoured 3-4-3 formation when he arrived at Old Trafford back in November.

However, it has failed to be as effective as he probably would have anticipated.

Amad Diallo and Diogo Dalot were initially Amorim’s preferred wing-backs at the start of his tenure at the club.

But with Amad now used in a more attacking position and Dalot struggling to adapt to his new role, the head coach has been forced to look elsewhere for options.

Amorim set his sights on Lecce left-back Dorgu earlier this month and now looks primed to seal a deal for him.

United have reportedly reached a £29million agreement with the Serie A side for him.

It includes a further £4m in add-ons relating to Champions League qualification and a set number of Premier League appearances.

Should he join United, Dorgu could jump straight into Amorim’s starting line-up.

Compared to Man Utd stars Amad, Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui, the 20-year-old has won more duels and more possession this season and has made more tackles, crosses and interceptions.

He also has four goals and assists – a huge improvement on Dalot and Mazraoui’s zero.

And the left-back has attempted 36 shots in total – more than any of his potential future team-mates.

Dorgu’s all-round game appears to be slightly more balanced than that of United’s current defensive players.

He is effective both going forward and tracking back – which is exactly what Amorim has been looking for in recent months.

In another huge boost, he also boasts an impressive fitness record.

Nordsjælland technical director Alexander Riget, who watched the youngster grow up at the club, recently told Sport Witness: “He’s never injured – never.

“He played for Nordsjælland for six or seven years and I can’t remember him having one day where he was injured, which is very abnormal when you are growing. That is also a very good thing.”

It will come as music to Amorim’s ears given the recurring injury issues that have plagued Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw in recent years.

Dorgu’s goalscoring prowess was also evident on his senior international debut for Denmark in September.

He broke the deadlock against Switzerland with his first touch just 42 minutes after coming off the bench.

Should the full-back join United, he will be the first signing of the Amorim era.
