Exact age women start to feel ‘invisible’ as expert reveals 8 styling tips to avoid being overlooked

WOMEN begin to feel ‘invisible’ in both work and social situations when they reach the age of 36, according to research.

A poll of 2,000 women found 44 per cent have struggled with feelings of being overlooked and unacknowledged.

For 45 per cent of these, such experiences have occurred in social settings, while 24 per cent have felt unseen in their workplace.

And 23 per cent have encountered this while navigating the healthcare system.

Around two in five (39 per cent) have felt invisible after struggling to find clothing that caters to them as they get older, and 37 per cent attribute these feelings to changes in their appearance.

The research, commissioned by fashion retailer Klass, found 75 per cent of women think high street outlets prioritise younger demographics, leaving older women feeling underserved.

This has resulted in many struggling to find suitable outfits for weddings (30 per cent), Christmas and New Year’s parties (19 per cent), and holidays (17 per cent).

Simon Barnett, director of the fashion retailer which specialises in clothing for those over 45, said: “This research sheds light on the challenges many women face as they age, including feeling overlooked in various areas of life, from social interactions to the workplace and beyond.

“It’s clear that societal attitudes toward ageing, particularly for women, play a significant role in these experiences.

“It’s a shame to see that a recent phenomenon called ‘Invisible Women Syndrome’ does seem to exist.

“But by talking openly about these issues, we can work towards creating a society where women feel valued and seen at every stage of life.”

Overall, 62 per cent of respondents believe societal beauty standards have significantly contributed to women feeling invisible.

Meanwhile, 57 per cent think the lack of representation for women in their 40s and 50s in the media plays a major role.

In the workplace, 29 per cent of those aged 40 and over said they’ve felt less visible since entering this decade, and 60 per cent feel their opinions are often dismissed due to their age.

However, 54 per cent went on to encourage younger women to celebrate every stage of their lives to avoid similar feelings.

And 50 per cent of those surveyed urge younger generations to embrace their individuality, according to the OnePoll.com figures.

Lynne McKenna, a celebrity stylist and ambassador for Klass, added: “The findings highlight the need for greater inclusivity in fashion and beyond.

“Women want to feel confident and represented, no matter their age or life stage.

“These conversations are important, not just in the fashion industry but across society, to ensure women feel empowered to express themselves and live authentically.”

“Women in this period of their lives should feel at the height of their fabulousness and confidence, not invisible.

“One of the ways women can feel more empowered is through an invigorated sense of style.

“This doesn’t mean a huge fashion overhaul, but simply looking at what makes you happy and avoiding the pressures of dancing to the drum beat of trends.”

STYLIST LYNNE MCKENNA’S TOP TIPS TO FEEL VISIBLE:

  1. Confidence is Key: The most important style tip is to wear what’s comfortable and makes you feel good about yourself.
  2. Invest in Quality: Well-made clothes will last longer and make you feel more polished.
  3. Be colourful: A pop of colour can instantly brighten your look and make you feel more vibrant.
  4. Invest in Fit: Select styles that suit and fit you well over chasing the latest fashion trends. It will help you emulate confidence
  5. Accessorise: Be rebellious with your jewellery to scarves and handbags.  They add mystic to any outfit
  6. Update Your Hairstyle: Who said you can’t go peroxide blonde?  A fresh cut and colour can do wonders
  7. Pay Attention to Details: A well-tailored jacket or a perfectly ironed shirt can make a big difference.
  8. Have Fun: Remember, style is an expression of your personality.  Enjoy celebrating ‘you’.

Linda Robson broke down about her friend’s illness

Linda, 66, was comforted on Loose Women today as the panel discussed their memories of the actress after her shock diagnosis was revealed.

It’s after Pauline‘s husband Steve Sheen last week revealed she would be stepping back from her 50-year career after living with the syndrome since 2021.

At the start of the show, Linda said she didn’t want to speak on Pauline’s behalf.

Instead she shared memories about the actress, who was first diagnosed with the illness in 2021.

Linda initially broke her silence on Pauline’s health on social media.

“This will be the only time I speak on behalf of my best friend, Pauline,” she said.

“For the past three years, I’ve been in close contact with her husband, Steve, and have spent time with Pauline.

“It breaks my heart to see her endure such a terrible illness.”

In a statement about his wife’s condition, Steve said: “It is with a heavy heart that I announce my wife Pauline’s decision to step back from all professional and commercial duties due to her diagnosis of Dementia in 2021.

“Pauline has been an inspiration through her work in the film and TV industry, her charity endeavours and as the founder of the very successful Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts (PQA).

“Her talent, dedication, and vision have touched countless lives and will continue to do so through the legacy of her work and through PQA where her vision and guidance has facilitated many young peoples’ progression and interest in the Arts and enhanced their self-confidence.”

The Strictly Come Dancing tour is currently heading round the country and, despite only just kicking off, has been hit by a series of blows.

Now it’s been revealed that pro dancer Vito Coppola has had to pull out of the tour after a previous injury flared up again.

The Italian dancer announced his withdrawal from the remainder of the live tour, with an emotional statement.

Vito, who was partnered with actress Sarah Hadland, performed in just one show with her.

He missed the beginning of the tour because of injury, but returned for one night at Newcastle, where they were crowned the champs.

Sharing their win on Instagram, and writing a heartfelt message to Sarah and to his fans, Vito said: “This is the way I would like to remember this tour Trilly ❤

“Even though I won’t be able to be with you on the Strictly Arena Tour, we had the chance to dance one more time together and it has been as always super beautiful and memorable.

He went on to praise their partnership, and say how he will continue to “support” her.

Referring to his injury, Vito added: “I promised you that I will take more care of me and my body and I want you to promise me that you will always stay the same enthusiastic, super active, smiling and jumpy person I have met few months ago, before this incredible experience started… keep shining Trilly, you are full of life.”

Vito ended by wishing the rest of the Strictly cast “good luck” and thanked his fans for their “support”.

Fellow professional Nikita Kuzmin will continue to partner Sarah for the remaining tour dates.

Meanwhile, Wynne was axed from the tour after he joked about having a threesome with professional dancer

He has since apologised for what he said.

Addressing the situation, Wynne said: “I’ve agreed with the BBC that l’ll take some time out from my radio show and the Strictly Live tour, as well as my other public commitments, to prioritise my wellbeing.

“I am deeply sorry for the pain my inappropriate actions have caused, and plan to take this time for self-reflection.

“Apologies to those I won’t get to see at the remaining performances and I’m grateful to my fellow tour gang for all the amazing support they have given me.”

‘EXPENSIVE’ TOUR

The tour has also been slammed for being “expensive”, especially as some of the stars are missing.

Taking to Twitter/X One person wrote: “I’m just a bit disappointed by how absences have been handled. The tour is pretty expensive for good seats but for one the actual winner of the show wasn’t there.

“That’s fair enough Chris said from the get go he had his own tour and wouldn’t be attending but in doing so it made Dianne a bit of a spare part.

“She was in most of the routines and she was amazing but she deserved to be more celebrated as the winner on the tour and she wasn’t. She was like a backing dancer to people she had actually won against.

“Another thing was that Vito, also wasn’t on the tour. I saw that he had injured himself but have since seen him in Glasgow doing the dance classes with Shirley!

“There’s been little to no update on his whereabouts and it seems like he’s preoccupied with his calendars and private dance events.”

Someone else wrote: “I’m supposed to be seeing the tour next weekend and honestly I’m not even sure what to expect at this point.

“The tickets were extortionately priced so we’ve had to keep scouring and sit higher tier just to afford it, which we were willing to do as have enjoyed the past tours but honestly im not sure if we can justify it again going forward.

“The merch prices are also ridiculous and the items themselves not even very good from what I’ve seen.”

Another wrote: “I always find it a bit bizarre that the winner doesn’t have to go on the tour ngl.

“Surely there should be a clause in the contract that says ‘if you win the show, you are required to do the tour'”.
