Steve Thompson’s off-the-cuff commentary sent fans into meltdown[/caption]

Rangers ended up winning the game 2-1 thanks to goals from Nicolas Raskin and Václav Černý either side of half-time before Kevin Mac Allister netted a late reply for the visitors.

But at around the 66-minute mark play was briefly stopped by referee Damian Sylwestrzak.

It came as former Accrington defender Ross Sykes was left in a heap on the floor after blocking a Ross McCausland shot square in the face.

This was explained on BBC Sportsound by commentator Neil McCann and pundit Steven “Tommo” Thompson.

Ex-Rangers winger McCann, 50, explained the situation before wincing upon seeing a replay.

However, Thompson seemed to be a little less sympathetic than his colleague, suddenly bursting out saying: “In the face!” in a funny voice.

The unexpected remark caught many listeners off guard and left them in stitches.

One fan captured the snippet of audio and posted it to social media to fans’ delight.

Reacting to the clip on social media, one fan said: “Wildly inappropriate commentary hahahahahaha.”

A second said: “Definitely forgot to hit the mute button,” followed by a laughing emoji.

A third added: “That is outstanding.”

Another said: “Can’t stop playing it.”

A fifth said: “Inappropriate (lol). Calm down man.”

While many others replied with sets of laughing emojis.

Former Lincoln player and manager Thompson, 69, was previously dropped from commentating for the BBC from November 2020 to the end of the year.

UEFA Europa League table.

Working as a freelancer, Thompson had made comments referencing “handbags” and “the referee’s wife” during an Accrington match.

In 2018 he was also warned by the broadcaster over his use of language that “didn’t meet the standards we expect”.

Listeners had raised concerns about comments across a 20-minute period, including one where he said: “Being a bit of a drama queen… he’d have been better wearing a skirt.”

The use of “handbags” had also been present.

But this time around Thompson seems to have made headlines for the right reasons, with his off-the-cuff comment during Rangers clash with USG treating fans to a funny moment during the game.

Rangers’ win confirmed their progression into the last 16 after sneaking into the top eight positions that provide knockout round spots without the need for an extra play-off round.

Wins for Manchester United over FCSB and Tottenham over IF Elfsborg saw all the British clubs progress automatically.

But Bild claims the Germans are already open to selling him for a hefty profit this summer.

Simons, who only played 11 times at PSG, spent last season on loan at Leipzig and impressed with 10 goals in 43 games.

He returned for a second spell last summer.

And the Bundesliga side wrapped up a full-time move for Simons on Thursday after the Netherlands international added a further five goals in 17 appearances.

However, Leipzig are now open to doing a quick turnaround in the summer.

They have only handed Simons a short-term contract until 2027.

And the Red Bull side will listen to offers between £58.5m and £67m at the end of the season.

It’s reckoned he already has a host of admirers in England too.

Man United are thought to be interested as Ruben Amorim hunts for dynamic attackers who are suitable for his 3-4-3 system.

Rivals Man City also fancy Simons as doubts swirl over the long-term futures of Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva.

While Liverpool are also being linked as Mo Salah continues to be lined up by Saudi sides as his contract runs down.

There is sure to be interest in Simons from other teams in Europe.

He spent nine years in Barcelona’s academy before joining PSG in 2019.

Bayern Munich were thought to have struck a deal for Simons last summer after his impressive Euros run.

And they could return as they look to continue snapping up the best talents in Germany’s top flight.

The incident took place on the N80 in Leagh, Rathoe, Co Carlow at around 1.15am this morning.

Gardai confirmed that only one vehicle was involved in the crash.

A garda spokesperson said: “Two occupants of the car, the male driver, 20s, and a male passenger, 20s, were pronounced deceased at the scene.

“Two passengers of the car, a male and female aged in their 20s, were taken to St. Luke’s General Hospital in Kilkenny with serious but non-life threatening injuries.”

The N80 at Leagh is currently closed and will remain closed for a number of hours.

Garda Forensic Collision Investigators are examining the scene.

Local diversions are in place but motorists in the area have been told to expect delays.

Gardai have urged anyone who may have any information to come forward.

In a statement this morning, a garda spokesperson said: “Gardai are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

“It is understood the vehicle involved in this collision was travelling from Mount Leinster to Carlow town via Fenagh.

“Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling along this route, or who were on the N80 at Leagh between midnight and 1.15am are asked to make this footage available to Gardai.

Katie Graham, who was just 19-years-old and from Laois, also lost her life in the crash.

Moving from Derry to Cork was tough, but it helped me mature quicker says young League of Ireland ace

EVAN McLAUGHLIN admits his first move from Derry — to Coleraine on loan — was handy.

But he reckons he has learned much more from joining Cork City, prompting him to hang around at Turner’s Cross.

29 January 2025; Evan McLaughlin of Cork City is pictured as Virgin Media Television announced its opening live fixtures for the 2025 SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division. Games to be shown live on Virgin Media Play and Virgin Media Two: Shelbourne vs Derry City on Friday, February 14th, Bohemian FC vs Shamrock Rovers on Sunday, February 16th, Galway United vs St Patrick’s Athletic on Friday, February 21st, Shelbourne vs Shamrock Rovers on Friday, February 28th, Waterford vs Cork City on Monday, March 3rd. Pictured as Virgin Media Television announced its opening live fixtures for the 2025 SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division

McLaughlin joined the Leesiders last season and helped them immediately return to the top flight.

But he could not have picked a place further from home to be a full-time footballer in Ireland.

He sighed: “It’s tough just to get home to see my mam and dad.

“They’ve only been down twice — 6½ hours is a long journey. You can’t fly anymore.

“There was a flight from Derry to Cork but they don’t do it anymore for whatever reason.

“But I’m halfway there once I get to Dublin. Then Dublin to Belfast is a straight road.

“Most of our games will be in Dublin this year so it won’t be as bad.

“Tim Clancy was very good with me in regards to going home. He would give me an extra day off if I needed it.

“It takes half a day to get there as it is!

“There were some times I was going and I was nearly coming back once I got there.

“But Tim was brilliant with the distance. Personally I needed a change because I always lived and played in Derry.

“I thought moving away from home and playing for a big club like Cork City would help me.

“Last year matured me, living away from home and not having home comforts. My ma wasn’t folding my washing.

“I’d only been to Coleraine, which is 30 minutes away from the house.

“I live in a house with two others in Cork. Seán Murray does the cooking. He’s older and has children so has that in him.

“I’d do my own cooking. Coco Pops and whatever cereal is there!”

SEASON GOALS

The 22-year-old is hoping to shake off a hamstring injury to be fit in time for their league opener against Galway United in a fortnight.

While Seani Maguire has targeted a top-half finish, McLaughlin is adopting a safety-first approach.

And the Derryman believes Maguire and strike partner Ruairí Keating can help them survive.

He said: “Staying up is the priority and whatever happens after that is a bonus.

“They went straight back down after they got promoted last time.

“It’s a big help when there’s two goalscorers.”

‘They’ve been slow to pay’ – Darts star still waiting on World Championship £60,000 jackpot to buy himself Rolex

He plans to buy a Rolex with his winnings[/caption]

Heta came close to a nine-darter in the previous round and he jumped around on stage like a madman before hugging his opponent.

The feat bagged Heta £60,000 courtesy of Paddy Power, who were dishing out £180,000 for every nine-darter thrown.

Only two were scored in the tournament, with the betting company donating one third of the sum to Prostate Cancer UK and the final third to a randomly selected fan in the crowd.

But Heta revealed he is still yet to receive his winnings so is yet to bag himself a dream purchase.

Heta stated at the time he was going to treat himself to a Rolex watch with his share.

But when asked if he had secured his gift to himself yet, the Heat laughed: “Obviously, I’ve still got my sundial, as you can see.

“Paddy Power has been slow to pay! Make sure you get that out there!

“But, nah, we’ll just roll with what we’ve got at the moment until the dollars come through, mate.

“Obviously, the nine-darter, brilliant. I’ve never felt anything like it. I never heard a crowd like it and I was hanging on to every single dart as they were.

“Like I said, I’d give that nine-darter back for the win, 100 per cent.

“But at the end of the day, we move on, and like I said, we’ve got a whole season ahead of us and that’s what I’m looking forward to.

“You’ve always got to look forward rather than looking back. You can just learn your lessons and that’s where I’ve learnt my lesson. Moving on, let’s go for it.”
