Google makes screeching U-turn on vow to never weaponise AI as world faces chilling new era of warfare

GOOGLE has dropped a bombshell U-turn that opens up the possibility of its AI tech powering weapons as the world enters a chilling new era of warfare.

The company had previously vowed its AI technology would never be used for purposes that were “likely to cause harm”.

But now that pledge has been scrapped, opening the door for Google AI to power high-tech battlefield weapons and spy gear.

Two Google execs, senior vice president James Manyika and AI chief Demis Hassabis, defended the move.

They said that businesses and governments need to work together on AI which “supports national security”.

The idea of using AI on the battlefield is controversial, but the men argued that the approach needed updating since AI had become so widespread.

They wrote: “Billions of people are using AI in their everyday lives. AI has become a general-purpose technology, and a platform which countless organisations and individuals use to build applications.

“It has moved from a niche research topic in the lab to a technology that is becoming as pervasive as mobile phones and the internet itself.”

Google banned its AI technology being used in weapons in 2018 after a protest from its own staff over a contract with the US Defense Department to use it to analyse drone video.

Firms across the AI sector are becoming more willing to partner with defence and surveillance projects.

OpenAI, the developers of ChatGPT, announced in December a partnership with fellow tech company Anduril to develop warzone technology against drones.

OpenAI had also previously ruled out military uses for its tech, but changed its own policy last year.

Many experts are concerned about the implications of unchecked AI development.

Top scientists last year urged government to realise that AI is not “a toy” and could be catastrophic for humankind.

In a report calling for stricter regulations on the tech, researchers said AI – in the wrong hands – could be used to produce biological weapons and someday make humans extinct.

However, many AI weapons projects are steaming ahead nonetheless.

The US Navy recently deployed the world’s first AI warship.

USS Fitzgerald, first launched January 1994, has been redeployed with an innovative artificial intelligence program used by the Pentagon.

The software uses machine learning to predict maintenance issues before they have even happened, allowing crews to avoid major malfunctions and stay on the water.

It takes 10,000 sensor readings every second from all over the ship – including the hull and the mechanical and electrical systems.

The AI algorithm then interprets the data to make maintenance recommendations to the crew.

Militaries across the world are already racing to develop AI-powered weapons in a bid to find an edge of the battlefield.

The United States Marine Corps completed the second test flight of an unmanned aircraft called the Kratos XQ-58 Valkyrie, piloted by AI, in February last year.

This development marked a milestone in implementing Project Eagle, the service’s aviation modernization strategy.

Major General Scott Cain, Air Force Research Lab commander, said last year: “AI will be a critical element to future warfighting and the speed at which we’re going to have to understand the operational picture and make decisions.”

And South Korea has unveiled plans for a new AI-powered tank, which would be the world’s first powered by hydrogen.

Rotem, a subsidiary of motor company Hyundai, released its plans for these hi-tech war machines, that would be used by the South Korean army.

What are the arguments against AI?

ARTIFICIAL intelligence is a highly contested issue, and it seems everyone has a stance on it. Here are some common arguments against it:

Loss of jobs – Some industry experts argue that AI will create new niches in the job market, and as some roles are eliminated, others will appear. However, many artists and writers insist the argument is ethical, as generative AI tools are being trained on their work and wouldn’t function otherwise.

Ethics – When AI is trained on a dataset, much of the content is taken from the Internet. This is almost always, if not exclusively, done without notifying the people whose work is being taken.

Privacy – Content from personal social media accounts may be fed to language models to train them. Concerns have cropped up as Meta unveils its AI assistants across platforms like Facebook and Instagram. There have been legal challenges to this: in 2016, legislation was created to protect personal data in the EU, and similar laws are in the works in the United States.

Misinformation – As AI tools pulls information from the Internet, they may take things out of context or suffer hallucinations that produce nonsensical answers. Tools like Copilot on Bing and Google’s generative AI in search are always at risk of getting things wrong. Some critics argue this could have lethal effects – such as AI prescribing the wrong health information.

Andrew’s lonely 65th birthday is a reflection of ‘many wasted years ahead – he may want a comeback, it’s a non-starter’

PRINCE Andrew is turning 65 this month, and his birthday is a reflection of the “many wasted years ahead”, according to a royal expert.

The disgraced Duke of York Prince paid millions to Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre in an out-of-court settlement three years ago, while denying sexual assault accusations.

And now is said to be too scared to visit the US again amid fresh calls for an FBI probe into the Epstein scandal.

Andy, 64, has left the UK only once in almost six years.

Royal author Phil Dampier said that his birthday will be a time of reflection of the “bad position” he is in.

Speaking to Fabulous, the expert shared: “He’s 65 so that brings it home to you, the sort of bad position that he’s in.

“He’s now 65 and has many, many wasted years now ahead of him that he could have been doing something useful, and he’s no longer going to be doing that.”

The royal author shared how Prince Andrew may be hopeful of turning things around, but stated he didn’t think this was possible.

Andrew was forced to step back from royal duties following a disastrous interview on BBC’s Newsnight in November 2019 in which he refused to condemn his relationship with paedophile billionaire Jeffrey Epstein.

Phil added: “I personally think he still possibly harbours thoughts about eventually being able to make a comeback.

“But I think that’s a non-starter, to be honest.”

It has long been rumoured that King Charles, 75, is running out of patience with his younger brother, who is said to spend all day “watching TV in a dark room” like a prisoner at his “crumbling” home, Royal Lodge.

Charles is said to have wanted Andrew out of the house for years, and wishes him to move into the much more modest Frogmore Cottage, which is also in Windsor Great Park.

Phil continued: “It is a big problem for him and for the king.

“What is he going to do with the rest of his life?

“At 65 it does emphasise that it’s a great, great waste.”

Andrew, who moved into Royal Lodge, the former home of the Queen Mother, in 2004 – has refused to move, after taking on a lease that lasts until 2078.

As part of the agreement, Andrew is obliged to maintain repairs on the property.

But there is increasing doubt cast on this possibility, since the recent appearance of photographs that appear to show the mansion in a poor state – with peeling paint and black mould.

There is new controversy after it was revealed that Prince Andrew has now found a mystery benefactor willing to stump up millions of pounds to help him keep his publicly owned home.

Inside Prince Andrew's 'crumbling' Royal Lodge

THE disgraced Duke of York resides at the £30million Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park, Berkshire - at least for now.

King Charles has redoubled his efforts to evict the Duke – with insiders branding the stand-off the “siege of Royal Lodge“.

Despite his divorce from Sarah Ferguson in 1996, Prince Andrew lives with his ex-wife at the countryside estate.

Prince Andrew’s royal residence, with its eye-catching white exterior, boasts 30 rooms with plenty of space for entertaining, plus seven bedrooms spread across the two topmost floors.

The Duke of York is said to spend all day “watching TV in a dark room” like a prisoner at his “crumbling” home.

Royal Lodge is said to “need extensive repairs”, thought to be about £400,000 a year.

The monarch is said to be becoming increasingly frustrated at Andrew’s refusal to care for the colossal mansion.

Andrew is said to have promised King Charles he would take care of its expensive repairs – despite having no apparent source of income.

New family arrival

Phil stated that Prince Andrew will no doubt be placing his efforts on the family’s new arrival, Athena.

It was reported last week that Princess Beatrice has given birth to her second child with husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.

Their baby daughter was born several weeks prematurely and is said to be healthy and doing well – weighing 4lb 5oz.

Phil stated: “He’ll [Andrew will be] obviously be delighted with the arrival of his fourth grandchild.

“The whole family would dote on the children, and that will give him something to occupy him.

“In terms of royal duties, I think he’s finished.”

Andrew’s birthday

Speaking of his 65th birthday celebrations, the royal author stated that celebrations will be lowkey.

He shared: “I don’t think there’ll be any great celebrations. They [the royal family] might wish him a happy birthday online.

“Obviously he didn’t go to Christmas this year or last year.

“At the moment, it’s extremely difficult for him, and I think he’s going to keep out of sight.

“Easter will be in the next time when the whole family gets together, and we’ll be interested to see if he turns up for that.”

I personally think he still possibly harbours thoughts about eventually being able to make a comeback. But I think that’s a non-starter, to be honest

It comes after the Duke of York’s relationship with alleged Chinese spy Yang Tengbo – who helped broker deals – was ruled a “threat to national security”.

Andrew cultivated Chinese officials, including seeking advice from a communist minister and having covert meetings with the country’s ambassador, according to documents, reports the Times.

It has further raised concerns that Andrew was willing to use his royal status for his own private benefit regardless of the risk of compromising Britain’s security interests.

Kate & Wills’ parenting mantra that ensures Charlotte & Louis are not ‘spares’ despite George being the ‘important’ one

PRINCESS Kate and Prince William are determined that Charlotte and Louis won’t feel like “the Spare”, like Prince Harry, according to a royal expert.

Royal author Phil Dampier claims the Prince and Princess of Wales see Prince George, 11, as the “most important”, but want his siblings to be his “equals.”

Prince George is the ‘important one’, but Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis may have a big role to play, claims a royal expert[/caption]

Speaking to Fabulous, he claimed: “I think William and Kate see George as primus inter pares – first among equals.

“Obviously he is the most important one.

“Yes, he is the future King but the way things are going Charlotte and Louis may have major roles in the future.

“Certainly the royal family will need them as they are getting thin on the ground.

“Kate has always been close to her siblings and she wants her children to share the same sort of bond.

“Prince Harry always felt like ‘The Spare’ but perhaps that won’t happen with Charlotte and Louis as there are two of them and they will support each other, as well as George.”

We shared how Princess Kate has been touring round schools for Prince George, who will leave Lambrook school next year.

The Princess of Wales, 43, looked round the £10,000-a-term, “boldly academic” University College School (UCS) in Hampstead after term ended for the festive break.

The same week, Kate viewed Highgate School, located two miles away, which was closed for a “special VIP visitor”, according to the Mail.

Phil said the family ideally would love to keep all three siblings educated together.

He continued: “Sending them all to the same school – as they go to now – would make sense for looking after each other but also for security reasons.

“It will be easier to protect them all at the same school.

“Charlotte, who of course is third in line to the throne, is already a strong character and we’ve seen her telling George what to do at formal occasions, as she did at Queen Elizabeth’s funeral when she said he should bow in front of her coffin.

“I can see her looking after both her brothers at school and just being there when they need her.”

One of the options being considered is Marlborough College, where Princess Kate was educated, and the royal has been on a viewing there too.

Phil stated: “Kate went to Marlborough College and had a great time and it would be ideal for all three to go there.

“It has six all boys houses, six all girl houses and four mixed ones, so there would be a choice.

“But Kate has also been spotted at University College school in Hampstead, North London, so maybe no decisions have yet been made.

“Certainly the days of sending royal children to spartan boarding schools like Gordonstoun have gone, and William and Kate will want their kids to be happy and settled wherever they go.

“It’s all part of their determination to give them as normal an upbringing as possible, mixing with other children and growing up well balanced and grounded.”

All three children will be essential to the ‘Firm’, claims royal author Phil Dampier[/caption]

The royal expert explained that Princess Charlotte, nine, and Prince Louis, six, may play an important role in the royal family when they grow up.

He added: “With Prince Andrew in disgrace, Harry and Meghan off the scene and older royals retiring, all three children will be essential to the ‘Firm.”

“Society and the monarchy are changing rapidly and by the time William comes to the throne attitudes will be even more varied about its value.

“To modernise, the characters in this real life soap opera have to be popular and relevant and the three children will only be able to fulfil their duties if they are in touch with the public.

“How they interact with other pupils and enjoy their school years will be a vital part of their education for life.”

Eton option

Another school choice for Prince George could be Eton College, where Prince William and Prince Harry went.

Vanity Fair’s royal correspondent Katie Nicholl said on our Royal Exclusive show that Kate and William will likely choose the famous school for their son.

She shared: “I think they’re quite traditionalist in that respect. George plays polo, he’s learning to fly helicopters, he’s very like his father in that respect.

“I think because William had such a wonderful time at Eton, I think that’s probably where he will end up.

“If George does end up at Eton, he’s not going to be far from his mum and dad, he’s not going to be far from the King, and it is almost a right of passage in that world.”

Will Prince George go to a state school?

ROYAL pros have discussed the possibility of Prince George ditching an education at Eton College for time at a state school.

Speaking to royal reporter Bronte Coy on The Sun’s Royal Exclusive, royal experts Richard Palmer and Katie Nicholl spoke about the significant decision looming for Princess Kate and Prince William in regards to Prince George’s schooling.

Katie acknowledged the Waleses’ desire to shake things up, as she claimed: “I think the big question is, is it going to be Eton and following in tradition and obviously George going to an all boys’ school, or will they break the tradition and go to a co-ed?

“I don’t think they’re at logger heads and I’m not dressing this up as a row, but it’s a big decision they’ve got to make.

“They’ve been around to see the schools and I guess at some point we will know what they’ve chosen to do.”

Meanwhile, Richard Palmer chimed in: “Personally, I think it’s a great shame that our future head of State doesn’t actually go to a state school.

“And I think it would be fantastic if that were to happen.

“I think Katie’s right, it’s second nature for people of their social background to send their kids away, clearly if George is at Eton they’re just around the corner, but I think what tends to happen is that the kids themselves don’t want to be going from home every day because they’re not then really at the heart of the school community.

“You want to be a boarder, so I’m guessing all of the kids will end up boarding, even if they go to schools very close.”

Brian O’Driscoll’s hilariously cheeky description of James Lowe after starring role in Ireland’s win over England

BRIAN O’Driscoll described James Lowe as being a particularly tough tackle because he’s ‘all hips and big a**e’.

The Leinster wing could easily have been given POTM honours on Saturday since he scored a try and set up two others in a rampaging display.

https://twitter.com/offtheball/status/1886906328557478168

His score didn’t look on at all when he received the ball out wide but he was able to plow through Alex Mitchell before making a dash for the line.

While analysing Ireland’s 27-22 success on Off the Ball, BOD admitted: “I wouldn’t love to tackle James Lowe, I can’t lie. He’s all hips and big a**e!

“He’s quite big and powerful with that low centre of gravity.

“Has an unbelievable capacity to go again when it looks as though he’s tripping up.”

“There are certain players that I’d have gone up against like Vincent Clerc where y’know they’re smaller in stature but fast and powerful.

“With the likes of him we used to say you have to hit him and he has to stay hit. And he had to go again.

“Sometimes you can get caught off guard with the smaller guys. You shouldn’t with the bigger guys because that’s their game.

“Lowe isn’t slow but his top-end speed isn’t his sweet spot, it’s that power game.”

Somewhat surprisingly, the 46-year-old then shared that he was always more of a believer that ‘absolute authority’ and commitment to the tackle was more important than technique.

Ireland will have plenty of tough tackling assignments on Sunday since Scotland boast several bruising runners including Duhan van der Merwe, hat-trick hero vs Italy Huw Jones and Blair Kinghorn.

Mack Hansen and Finlay Bealham are currently in a race to be passed fit for the Murrayfield clash.

The winger required stitches in the first half and was able to return to the fray but it remains to be seen if he will be given the green light to line out in Edinburgh.

Bealham is also a concern for the encounter after he picked up a leg injury of his own in Ireland’s Six Nations’ opener.

Bealham’s issue is of particular concern given Tadhg Furlong was absent because of a calf problem and it is unclear whether he or Joe McCarthy (concussion) will be available to face Gregor Townsend’s men.

An IRFU bulletin said both had ‘stepped up their rehabilitation programmes and a decision on their availability will be made later this week’.

In the meantime, two uncapped props – Munster’s Thomas Ahern and Shayne Bolton of Connacht – have been added to the squad.

Former Ireland back-row Sean O’Brien and Mark Sexton – elder brother of Johnny – have joined the coaching staff this week.

They will form part of Mike Prendergast’s management team for the Ireland A team for their game against England in Bristol on Sunday February 23.

That will be the day after the third-round Six Nations fixture for Simon Easterby’s side against Wales in Cardiff.
