Dail chaos looms as mass walkout of TDs planned over Michael Lowry’s ‘Alice in Wonderland stuff’ speaking time bid row

A MASS walkout of TDs is looming when the Dail returns on Wednesday in the row over Michael Lowry’s bid to play both opposition and Government.

The election of Micheal Martin as Taoiseach was delayed for a day last month after opposition parties teamed up to cause chaos in the Dail.

The Government promised to come up with a solution during the two-week recess.

But opposition parties have shot down the Government’s “nonsense” proposals to allow speaking time for Independent TDs Lowry, Barry Heneghan, Gillian Toole and Danny Healy-Rae.

All four were involved in the programme for Government negotiations and have vowed to support the Fianna FailFine Gael coalition for the next five years.

However, the Independents also want to be labelled as opposition TDs so they can get speaking time in the Dail during Leader’s Questions and challenge the Taoiseach – despite vowing to support his Government.

Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald today claimed that all opposition parties are united against the Government’s plan.

She said: “This is Alice in Wonderland stuff.

“We’re not prepared to allow the democratic function of the opposition to be undermined at the very, very beginning of this new Dail.

“We will stand our ground and we will consider all and every option.”

Deputy McDonald said the opposition will not stop their protests until Lowry and his Independent TDs are designated as Government TDs.

She said: “They have said themselves very clearly that they are not outside of Government. They are inside government.

“Does anybody actually believe that Michael Lowry taking to his feet during Leader’s Questions as an opposition deputy would be putting Micheal Martin through his paces and holding him to account? That is a nonsense, a farce and an insult to democracy.”

Asked if the opposition parties will join together for a mass walkout on Wednesday, McDonald said: “We are in contact all of us the combined opposition and we will consider every single option available to us.”

GOVERNMENT FAILED TO GET GEOWYN

TWO thirds of Irish people believe the Government did not perform as it should have in response to the destruction caused by Storm Eowyn, a new poll has revealed.

It comes as 39,000 people remain without electricity across the country today as crews continued to work around the clock to bring back power.

The Ireland Thinks Sunday Independent poll also shows growth in popularity for Sinn Fein and its leader Mary Lou McDonald with a slip in support for Fine Gael.

Micheal Martin remains the most popular leader in the country with an approval rating of 49 per cent.

The Fianna Fail leader is followed by the Social Democrats’ Holly Cairns on 46 per cent and Fine Gael’s Simon Harris on 45 per cent.

Deputy McDonald’s approval rating is up three points to 38 per cent following a week where she led the Opposition Dail rebellion that delayed the election of the Taoiseach by one day.

Sinn Fein’s support is also up three points in the poll to 22 per cent – one below Fianna Fail at 24 per cent and one above Fine Gael who drop two points to 20 per cent.

Independents have nine per cent of the public support followed by the Social Democrats on eight per cent.

Aontu and Labour are both on four per cent while the Greens climbed one point to three per cent.

The poll also shows that two thirds of respondents believe the Government did not respond as it should have in the aftermath of Storm Eowyn.

The number of people who believe housing is the number one issue facing our country has also risen from 51 per cent last month up to 59 per cent.

Ex-Green Party boss Eamon Ryan took 200 flights while in Govt as Climate Dept spent nearly €1m on almost 4k air fares

THE former Green Party leader’s department paid over €420,000 for 1,514 flights last year.

And as Minister, Eamon Ryan himself travelled on 106 planes to places such as Zurich, New York, Budapest, Istanbul and Baku in 2024.

In total, over the term of the last Government, the department in charge of fighting climate change spent nearly €1 million on almost 4,000 flights.

This was despite Covid-19 travel restrictions in 2020 and 2021.

In 2020, the department booked just 201 flights to places across the globe.

Travel restrictions continued to limit flights in 2021 when the department paid €26,027 for 182 flights.

When the world began to open up again in 2022, some €201,854 was spent on 825 flights.

The spend took off in 2023 when €345,777 was dished out on plane tickets by the Department.

It ramped up even further in Ryan’s final year as Minister for Climate in 2024, when €422,076 was paid for 1,514 journeys.

A spokesperson told The Irish Sun: “Since 2020, the department has seen a significant increase in terms of scope and staff numbers. Staff numbers increased from approximately 400 to more than 800 at the end of 2024 and as a result additional business travel has been necessary in order to carry out the department’s work.”

During his time as Minister, Ryan took 207 flights paid for by the Department of Climate.

The majority of these flights were for EU meetings in Brussels with other trips to Washington, Paris, Dubai and others.

Last year, the former Minister represented Ireland at COP29 talks in Baku where world leaders met to discuss a path to tackling climate change.

It comes as the current Government prepares to send a bumper number of Ministers away for the St Patrick’s Day diplomacy blitz.

Reports suggest that the Coalition is considering sending more Ministers than ever to the United States in order to “love bomb” the new Trump administration amid concerns about how the US President’s policies may impact Ireland.

Oisin Coghlan from Friends of the Earth Ireland told the Irish Sun it is important that Ireland’s Ministers be in the room at meetings in the EU or globally when big decisions are made despite the carbon emissions from flights.

He said: “Depending on what the meetings are – I would want the Ministers and the civil servants to be at the meetings big decisions and policies are being made in Europe or indeed globally.”

Tennis stars have to be separated in furious on-court row… AFTER heated Davis Cup match finished

TWO tennis stars were kept apart after a simmering row during a Davis Cup rubber erupted again at the finish.

Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild was furious that French rival  Arthur Fils failed to concede a crucial point after what many reckoned was a clear umpiring error.

Two men embracing.
Fils was guided away by team members following the late flare-up

With both players at the net, Fils drilled a fierce backhand out, with Wild appearing to sway out of the way.

Sp the South American was stunned when he was ruled to have touched the ball with his back as it passed him.

That meant his serve had been broken, leaving him staring defeat at 1-6 4-5 down.

And it meant a tense contest exploded.

Wild stopped in amazement, flinging his arms out wide in amazement, when he heard the umpire’s call.

His protests to the officials got him nowhere.

And  his frustration quickly turned to Wild, who walked off and ignored pleas to tell the umpire the ball hadn’t hit his opponent.

Instead he sat down and gestured towards the official’s chair.

The Brazilian team were as furious as Wild, with one member complaining loudly to the umpire: “It’s the wrong decision! It wasn’t even close!”

Once Fils served out to clinch the rubber, the anger ramped up.

He was confronted by Brazilians, and eventually the two players were steered away from each other.

Viewers mainly seemed to side with Wild afterwards, many accusing Fils of poor sportsmanship for failing to intervene.

One fan said: “A player with integrity overrides the umpire .”Another posted: “

Deplorable umpiring. But Fils has poor character for not calling his own shot out.”

But a few observers suggested: “The ump made the call. Thiago’s issue should be with the ump”

And the pro-Fils camp included comments like this: “Respect?! Fils didn’t even celebrate his win because of the umpire mistake, went for respectful handshake. It’s Seyboth Wild who got the things heated.”

The 20-year-old winner later admitted he too thought the umpire had been WRONG.

He said: “At the end, it was a bit hot, that’s true.’

“I think he didn’t touch the ball on the point that gave me 5-4, which is a fact of play that puts him at a disadvantage.

“But that’s the way it is. I think if it had gone the other way, he wouldn’t have given me the point either.

“There’s no problem between him and me. We explained ourselves afterwards.”

France later sealed a 3-0 victory over Brazil to book a second-round tie with Croatia.
