Gladiators star risks wrath of show bosses after he ‘promotes product accused of deceptively marketing to children’

A BBC Gladiators star could land himself in hot water for his promotion of a US supplement brand, which has been criticised for its ‘deceptive marketing’ practices.

TV’s Gladiators star Matty Campbell, who is better known as his TV alter ago Bionic, has previously promoted US firm Ghost with pictures of him posing with supplements and products on his social media.

However it could be a tricky collaboration for the star, as the brand is known for its range of protein powders and performance focused supplements – all of which could be deemed harmful to children.

With Gladiators such a family favourite show, Campbell has a younger fanbase who could be influenced by his promotion of the brand.

According to The Mirror, the athlete has offered his 25,000 followers the chance to win some Ghost products for free.

However it’s not clear if Campbell is in contract with the brand, with his promotion of Ghost via his personal Instagram rather than a dedicated account for his on-screen persona for the BBC show.

The partnership is with the people behind the Gladiators, the athletes, rather than the Gladiators themselves. He has never posted or promoted Ghost as a Gladiator. It is nothing to do with their BBC on-air persona.

Ghost has previously been reported to regulators in December 2022 with Watchdog Truth In Advertising (TINA) accusing it of violating Federal Trade Commission and U.S Food and Drug Administration law.

The oragnisation slammed Ghost as it claimed the company “packages its energy drinks and supplements in a manner that appeals to children.”

They also claimed it “targets kids with deceptive and unfair marketing by, among other things, using influencers popular among children” which could include popular figures like Campbell.

In their complaint to regulators, the Watchdog also added: “Consumers who see Ghost’s marketing on social media, gaming platforms or on the company’s website are not informed, however, that these products are only intended for healthy adults.

The organisation also highlighted Ghost’s use of licensed candy flavours, such as Sour Patch Kids and Swedish Fish as problematic.

Laura Smith, Legal Director at TINA.org, has also spoken out with concern for Ghost’s marketing practices and for the use of figures like Campbell.

She said: “Within a couple weeks of TINA.org’s complaint to the FTC, Ghost removed certain unsubstantiated and unapproved health claims from its website, including claims that its products can reduce anxiety and balance hormones, as well as some, but certainly not all, cognitive enhancement claims.

“While using candy flavoring for adult-only products is not illegal, TINA.org’s investigation revealed that Ghost branded its products to mimic popular candy wrappers and targeting minors without properly disclosing that the products are only intended for healthy adults.

“Ghost’s epic failure to prevent unwarranted health and safety risks to children renders the company’s marketing unfair, deceptive, and in violation of the FTC Act.”

Directly referencing Campbell’s social media promotion she added: “If Matty Campbell has a youth fanbase and is marketing products that are unsafe for children, then the marketing should clearly and conspicuously disclose this safety information.”

There is concern around the use of supplements for children and teenagers, with many paediatricians and sport dieticians previously speaking out publicly about how they would not recommend them for use by kids.

The Sun has contacted Matty and the BBC for comment on this story.

Tubi has already been a huge success in the US[/caption]

And there are British TV shows most will recognise too, including Peep Show, Shameless, Being Human and Great British Menu.

Tubi launched in the UK last year, after a successful start in the US where it has a huge library of 250,000 titles.

It’s available on devices like Amazon Fire Sticks and mobiles but it will be coming to directly to some TVs soon as well.

Tubi is planning to roll out the app to TVs powered by the TiVo OS.

A number of TVs by the likes of Panasonic, Bush and Sharp use the TiVo OS.

“VOD catalogues typically carry a mix of old & new content which is attractive to many audiences,” said Gabriel Cosgrave, from TiVo parent Xperi.

“Services like Tubi offer viewers a frictionless yet personalised experience as well as a spontaneous discovery of content across the decades at no additional cost.

“By integrating Tubi into our content ecosystem, we’re not just following a trend – we’re responding to clear audience demand for more flexible, accessible, broad & nostalgic entertainment options.

“Viewers expect not only a time spanning catalogue of content but a simplicity in finding the right content and a must-have feature for any platform seeking to provide a complete content experience.”

For TVs that don’t have Tubi integrated there is another way you can get the service on your screen.

When loading Tubi on your smartphone, look out for Google Cast and Apple AirPlay buttons.

As long as the TV and your phone are connected to the same Wi-Fi network you should be able to beam content from Tubi on your phone directly to your TV.

Tubi recently announced that it had surpassed 97million monthly active users and streamed over 10billion hours last year.

“Tubi’s momentum is growing as audiences increasingly value a premium entertainment experience that is also 100% free, fun and reflective of culture,” said Tubi CEO Anjali Sud.

“Our strategy is simple yet powerful: put viewers first by offering unique stories from unique storytellers, a vast selection of content to choose from and a delightful experience across devices.

“We let our viewers guide us and obsess over their engagement, and we are seeing the results.”

One to watch?

Analysis by Jamie Harris, Assistant Technology and Science Editor

Free is always a welcome word, especially in the ever-more expensive streaming sector.

Not needing to sign-up is even more appealing.

Tubi joins a growing list of free ad-supported platforms.

What makes Tubi stand out is the number of big name releases it has on the list.

The fact it has Tubi Originals too provides something new and different to watch.

Walmart Is Selling Avia Sneakers and Hoka Dupes for $94 Cheaper

If there’s one item of clothing that should be as stylish as it is functional, it’s your shoes. And whether you’re looking for a pair that offers support for long hours on your feet at work, need to upgrade your workout apparel, or just want something that’s comfortable to walk in, you don’t have to go over budget to get the best of both worlds. Lately, shoppers have been taking to social media to gush about new sneakers at Walmart that could be game changers for your footwear, including new options from Avia and even dupes of pricey Hokas for up to $94 cheaper.

There’s a great deal on Avia sneakers at Walmart.

While it’s not exactly a secret that Walmart can be a great resource for overhauling your wardrobe on a budget, it can still be exciting to come across an amazing new find.

In a recent video, TikToker Summer Jenae highlighted the latest drop of Avia 5000 sneakers. Jenae notes that they're available in even more colors and styles, and are selling for as low as $19.98.

This deal gets even better when you realize that the nearly identical Avi-Verge sneakers are selling for $59.98 on Avia’s website.

Some sneakers closely resemble much pricier Hoka models.

Other shoppers were keen to share the Hoke dupes they found at Walmart. TikTok user @xodani3 posted a video running down the different colors and styles available, calling them “so cute” and pointing out their similarities to the well-known running shoe brand.

“I found the shoes everyone’s been talking about! These ones definitely look like Hokas,” she says, pointing to a pair of Avia Comfort Performance women’s sneakers, which retail for just $22.98 at Walmart. Meanwhile, similar options like the Avi-Run Swift sell for as much as $69.98 on the Avia website.

But how much cheaper are they than the higher-end option? The similar-looking Hoka Clifton 9 sneakers for running and everyday walking start at $115.99 and run up to as much as $145 on the company’s website—making them at least $93 cheaper at Walmart.

The major savings aren’t the only upside here. TikToker Ash Edwards went so far as to try them on in the store and remark on how “pretty” many of the available styles are.

“They really do look just like them!” she gushes while putting them in her cart, adding that the Avia running shoes “look just like Brooks,” another highly-rated brand that’s popular among devoted runners.

I couldn’t help but to go look for the Walmart x hoka duupe!! Y’all it’s SO CUTE. And it’s not just how they look: Users also took the comments to point out that the shoes actually feel great on your feet, too.

“They feel amazing! I got a pair about a week ago, and they feel just like my Hokas,” one user writes.

“I have the blue pair, and it honestly feels like you’re walking on a cloud,” another says. “Most comfortable shoes ever.”

The takeaway.

Savvy shoppers take note: Walmart is currently selling Avia sneakers that have social media buzzing. Not only are some of the shoes about $40 cheaper than those on Avia's website, but some say the sneakers are very convicining Hoka dupes that cost roughly $94 less than the full-priced originals. The best part? Shoppers vouch for their quality, too, saying they’re they’re as comfy as they are stylish.
