Ryanair scraps all flights to European city from next month… with no other direct UK routes

RYANAIR has confirmed that all flights to a European city are being cancelled.

The low-cost airline is scrapping flights to and from Aalborg, after Denmark announced new aviation taxes.

The new tax has introduced a 50DKK (£5.57) fee for all passengers departing Denmark, which is paid for by airlines.

The cancellation will see the London Stansted to Aalborg route scrapped from next month.

This is a blow to Brits who can currently fly to the Danish city for just £14.99 with Ryanair.

When the route stops, there will be no other direct flights from the UK.

Ryanair has since said they will also be closing its base at Billund airport, which has two aircraft.

The cancellations will see 32 routes cancelled, with 1.7million fewer seats.

A Ryanair spokesperson said: “We are very disappointed to announce the closure of our 2 aircraft Billund base and our operations at Aalborg from the end of March, but we have been left with no other choice following the Danish Govt’s short-sighted decision to introduce a harmful aviation tax from Jan 2025.”

The Danish city of Aalborg – the fourth largest in Denmark – has previously been named the happiest city in the world, as well as the best for quality of life.

Brits who want to travel there after March will need to change at Amsterdam or Copenhagen, with the cheapest flight £81 each way.

It’s not the only flight route that has been cancelled by Ryanair.

The Irish airline confirmed that their Bournemouth to Agadir route has been scrapped.

Having only launched the flight to the Moroccan city back in April 2024, it was the 19th new destination to fly from the regional airport.

Ryanair has slammed the new Air Passenger Duty fees that will be introduced from April 2026, which will see a 15 per cent rise on most flights.

In better news, Ryanair has confirmed five new routes are launching from London Stansted.

The new routes include flights to Reggio Calabria in Italy, which have launched today along with Linz in Austria.

Flights to Clermont-Ferrand in France and Munster in Germany will launch on March 30.

And from April 1, flights to Lubeck, another German city, will operate from London Stansted.

Advice for flying with Ryanair

  • All Ryanair passengers can bring a small personal bag on board but this must fit under the seat in front of you, but it must be no bigger than 40cm x 20cm x 25cm
  • Any over-sized cabin bags will be refused at the boarding gate and put in the hold for a fee
  • Ryanair also charges passengers up to £55 check-in at the airport
  • Anyone who loses their card at the airport will have to pay a £20 reissue fee
  • Book to sit in the front five rows if you want to head off the plane first
  • Extra legroom seats can be found in rows 1 A, B, C or 2 D, E, F as well as row 16 and 17 near the emergency exit
  • The worst seat on Ryanair’s Boeing 737-800 aircraft is also 11A because of its lack of window.

Here are some other new flight routes launching this year.

Weather ‘turning colder’ as Met Eireann warn temps to plummet to -2C & expert confirms ‘no significant snow on horizon’

FORECASTERS have warned that the weather is “turning much colder” over the next few days, with temperatures to plummet to -2C.

High pressure is set to batter Ireland throughout the week, bringing cold and dry weather with daytime temperatures no higher than 6C.

Plenty of dry weather is still signalled[/caption]

Cathal Nolan from Ireland’s Weather Channel said the weather is “turning much colder” but increasingly settled from tomorrow onward.

He added: “High pressure builds across Ireland from tomorrow night onwards, bringing cold and dry weather for many with daytime values no higher than 6C with nighttime lows down to -3C in some locations under clear skies.

“This marks the start of a cooler spell of weather, though there’s conflicting evidence as to just how long and for how cold this spell of weather will become.”

The weather expert confirmed that people should not expect another beast from the east to hit our coasts, despite some people hoping snow will fall in the near future.

Nolan said: “As indicated over the last few days we don’t envisage any disruptive weather in the next 7-10 days, and there’s no significant snow or a beast from the east style event on the horizon, at least not within the medium term vide.”

It will be mostly dry for the rest of the week, but Met Eireann confirmed that the nights will be cold.

Today, Bank Holiday Monday, is set to bring breezy weather with rain moving in from the west.

There will be a little light rain or drizzle in places before more persistent rain develops in the west in the afternoon, slowly spreading east.

Highs of 9C to 12C with fresh and gusty southerly winds developing, strong near Atlantic coasts.

Met Eireann expert Andrew Doran-Sherlock said: “It will be dry for many for much of today, with just a little light rain or drizzle in places.

“Rather cloudy, though with limited brighter sunny spells. We’ll be wet and breezy for much of tonight with some spot flooding possible.

“The rain will clear scattered showers from Atlantic areas by morning, and the fresh and gusty solarly winds will also ease.”

The rain is set to clear eastwards through tomorrow morning, followed by sunshine and scattered showers.

Weather boffins added that those showers will become isolated tomorrow night with lows of -1C to 3C, followed by some frost and ice.

‘PLENTY OF DRY WEATHER’

Wednesday will see good spells of sunshine with just a few light showers possible near the western and northwestern coasts.

Highs of 6C to 9C in light, occasionally moderate southwesterly breezes.

Wednesday night is set to be dry but clear, with lows of -2C to 2C in light southerly breezes.

Andrew added: “It’ll be largely dry and sunny on Thursday, though it may turn cloudier for a time in the southwest with a chance of some patchy light rain or drizzle.

“Friday will be another mostly dry day with spells of sunshine, and there’s then some uncertainty for the weekend with the possibility of some rain moving in from the west at some stage.

“But overall plenty of dry weather is still signalled.”

Putin can threaten me all he wants but I WON’T stop reporting on Russia’s atrocities, blasts Sun journalist on GMB

THE SUN’s Defence Editor Jerome Starkey has blasted Vladimir Putin and said he won’t stop reporting on Russia’s atrocities.

A court in Russia’s Kursk border region has issued an arrest warrant for Jerome, 43, and put him on an international wanted list.

Downing Street blasted Russian President Vladimir Putin as desperate[/caption]

The award-winning journalist was asked by host Susanna Reid on Good Morning Britain today: “Are you nervous?”

Jerome replied that he is not nervous and that he will not “stop reporting honestly and fairly” on what’s happening in Ukraine.

He said: “It’s really clear a Russian court putting me on a wanted list is an act of political theatre.

“It’s an attempt to scare me and intimidate journalists like me who might cover the war in Ukraine.

“Ultimately by covering the war in Ukraine we are bringing to the attention of your viewers and our readers the atrocities that are being committed in a totally unnecessary conflict that Vladimir Putin has started.”

Jerome added: “I don’t want to dismiss it. It’s not my goal to provoke the Kremlin.

“Equally it is my objective to report honestly and fairly on what’s happening in Ukraine. I’m not going to stop doing that.”

The Kursk regional court accused Jerome of illegally crossing the border into Russia.

His coverage of the war has taken him across Ukraine but the court ruling was prompted by his reporting from inside Russia.

Jerome said it was a clear attempt at intimidation.

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) had petitioned the court saying a British citizen had entered Russia from Ukraine to film a report in August last year.

Downing Street condemned the arrest warrant calling it an example of “desperate rhetoric” from Putin’s administration.

“It’s just another example of desperate rhetoric from Putin’s government. Of course, we condemn it,” the Prime Minister‘s official spokesman said.

British journalists “shine a light into some of the darkest corners of the world, uncovering atrocities”, he added.

'His bully-boy threats from a sham court'

By Jerome Starkey

REPORTING from war zones is the best and worst job in the world.

I see horrific things and sometimes get scared witless.

But I get to tell amazing stories about ordinary people caught up in a conflict.

I won’t be stopped by the bully-boy threats from a sham Russian court in Kursk.

I have reported in these pages about innocent people maimed by cluster bombs.

We have given a voice to pensioners living in a Kharkiv bathroom because it is the only room without windows or outside walls that could be blown to bits by missiles.

We have told stories of babies born in bunkers.

Stories of parents who rescued stolen children from thousands of miles behind the front line.

Stories of civilians forced to wear uniforms to defend loved ones.

Stories of soldiers slain in blood-soaked trenches.

And I have interviewed captured Russian troops — some of them convicts press-ganged into Storm Z battalions

In August I had the extraordinary chance to visit Kursk, captured in Ukraine’s surprise attack.

It was Russia’s worst loss on home soil since WW2.

Russia claims my trip was a crime. It’s absurd. The Leninsky District Court said I crossed the border illegally.

What did they expect? For me to stop at the border, as drones swarmed overhead, and get my passport stamped?

What Russia really wants is to bury proper journalism, to stop reporters shedding light on Putin’s war crimes.

It won’t work. We did our jobs. We did journalism. And journalism is not a crime.

“Jerome Starkey’s award-winning reporting from inside Ukraine, exposing the details of Russia’s illegal war for millions of readers, is no different.

“And if the Kremlin cannot withstand the British newspaper highlighting Ukraine’s brave defence of its freedom, then frankly, Putin should roll back his tanks, withdraw his forces, and end the suffering of Ukrainian and Russian people.

“We will always stand with Ukraine, we will always stand by our free and fearless press.”

Jerome said it was “nice to feel wanted” but noted that Russia has a record of targeting Western journalists.

Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich was released in August after more than a year in prison.

He said: “This is clearly an attempt to shut down anyone who criticises the Russian invasion of Ukraine – and one that will not work.

“They are trying to intimidate me and other journalists covering this brutal war.

“But it is vital that journalists shine a light on Vladmir Putin’s horrific invasion of Ukraine.”

Editor-in-chief Victoria Newton said The Sun stood in “unwavering support”.

“This action by a sham Russian court is a blatant attempt to silence him and suppress The Sun and the free press from reporting on the horrific realities of the war,” she said.
