KEVIN McSTAY revealed Diarmuid O’Connor after suffering an injury in Mayo’s defeat to Galway.
The Ballintubber man was introduced on 47 minutes in Castlebar, only to be forced off with a shoulder injury after a tackle from Cillian Ó Curraoin.
Speaking after the game, Mayo manager McStay revealed O’Connor had been taken to hospital after the game.
And he hit out at the tackle itself, insisting the Galway man should have been shown a black card.
He said: “We’re a bit sore about it.
“Diarmuid won the ball and popped it to a Mayo lad and was hit late and that’s a black card – minimum, but nothing was done.
“You spend all winter carefully rehabbing him so that he’ll be fit for the spring and this happens.
“He’s a top player, an All-Star and he’s off to hospital.
“We’re sore about it, but we’re not pointing the finger at the ref, he was fine.”
If the loss of O’Connor was not bad enough, the Tribesmen went on to beat Mayo 0-26 to 0-16.
However, manager Padraic Joyce insisted he won’t be getting carried away by the result that saw his side kick eight two-pointers.
Joyce said: “I’m happy with the performance and that led to the victory so, overall, I’m very happy.
“We did OK in the first half and we felt that we controlled a lot of the play.
“But we gave Mayo six or seven turnovers that led to scores. We’re not going to get carried away.
“It was February 2 today and there’s a long way to go.
“But it’s nice to have four points out of four. Over the years we probably would have been seen as a team that’s nice to play against.
“But we’re trying to bring some physicality on to the pitch.
“We have a lot of men over 6ft and they got stuck in today, which is pleasing.”
A crowd of 12,291 turned up at MacHale Park and while there was very little between the teams in the first half, it was a different story in the second period.
Galway played the game on their terms while McStay’s side struggled to get to grips with their opponents.
Jack Coyne, Jack Carney, Jordan Flynn, Aidan O’Shea and Tommy Conroy were again conspicuous by their absence.
McStay conceded: “There’s no getting away from the fact that we were well off Galway. It was their day.”
Mayo won the corresponding fixture last year by a commanding 2-12 to 0-10 margin at Pearse Stadium.
But yesterday’s defeat was a sobering one.
McStay added: “We had a good feeling this time last year but we have to suck it up and take it on the chin. They were the better team.
“I’m going to take some comfort from the fact that the season is still well ahead of us.”
DANCING On Ice star Michaela Strachan has landed a brand new Channel 5 show exploring the secrets of the Ice Age.
The BBC presenter, 58, is currently competing in Dancing On Ice on ITV and is hoping to be crowned as the 2025 winner.
The epic three-part documentary series will delve into the heart of the Ice Age where viewers will see stunning locations around the world, breath-taking landscapes and expert interviews.
But aside from dancing, Michaela is set to appear on a new series called Ice Age: Apocalypse, alongside CBBC presenter and explorer Steve Backshall.
The series will chart the rise of the mega beasts, from woolly mammoths to sabre-tooth cats, the David and Goliath story of Neanderthals versus Homo Sapiens and the warning that global warming could trigger the next Ice Age.
The first episodes will see Michaela in Svalbard looking into why the Ice Age started in the first place. While Steve will be in the UK discovering which ice age mega beasts used to frequent here.
Alongside Professor Danielle Schreve, Steve explores the bones of mammoth, arctic foxes and even a massive Ice Age hyena.
The remains of almost a dozen ice age creatures are all found in the same small cave near Plymouth.
Meanwhile, Michaela takes a look at the most famous predator of the ice age – the sabre-toothed cat – and examines the beast’s skull and giant fangs,
The TV presenter is currently competing in this year’s Dancing On Ice – and according to Betfair odds, she’s a favourite to win the series.
She was praised for her stunning performance alongside professional figure skater Mark Hanretty, topping the leaderboard with an impressive 30.5 points out of a possible 40.
Michaela has been a regular face on our screens for over three decades, most notably on Autumnwatch, Countryfile, Springwatch and Winterwatch.
She also won a BAFTA for Best Children’s Presenter for her part in Michaela’s Wild Challenge and the programme won Best Children’s Factual.
The presenter recently opened up about how the previous year was “really sad” and surrounded by tragedy.
Speaking on the On The Marie Curie Couch podcast, she said: “There was a lot of loss in my close circle of family and friends, starting off at the beginning of the year with the passing of my sister-in-law who died of cancer … she suffered for three years and eventually passed in January.”
She explained that her partner Nick Chevallier’s previous wife had died from cancer, his best friend also died of a heart attack and the son of one of her close friends died at the age of just 35.
Ice Age: Apocalypse begins Sunday 9th February at 7:30pm on Channel 5.
ANDREW Dawson is a convicted serial killer known for the shocking murders of John David Matthews and Paul Hancock.
His crime spree, which began in 1981, will be examined in ITV’s Tracking a Serial Killer which airs on February 4, 2025.
Dawson was born in 1962, in Ormskirk, Lancashire.
Although not much is known about his early life, he claimed his first victim at the age of 19.
In August 1981, he murdered 91-year-old shopkeeper, Henry Walsh in his hometown.
Dawson was jailed in 1982, for stabbing Henry eleven times, and was released in 1999.
He was jailed three more times between 2003 and 2007, before being released in 2008.
After leaving prison, Dawson was moved to a probation hostel before being transferred to supported accommodation.
He eventually was allowed to live in a private residence, but his landlord, Artell Black, said Dawson was a problematic tenant.
According to Black, Dawson was a “risk to the community” and frequently aggravated other residents.
Dawson was arrested and charged for shoving Artell in the chest but did not face a prison sentence because of the low level of the offence.
On July 25, 2010, John David Matthews was found stabbed to death in his flat in Chaddesden, Derby.
Paul Hancock was found dead in the same area, just five days later.
Both men were placed in their bathtubs by Dawson, in an attempt to conceal their bodies.
Dawson was arrested on the same day that John’s body was found.
When he was arrested, his apartment was searched which uncovered a letter written by the killer.
The letter seemed to contain a confession and was signed “Yours, the Angel of Mercy”.
Detective Inspector Paul Callum said: “Dawson has shown no remorse for his actions and has simply sought to blame anyone he can for the direction his life has taken.
“These were cold, calculated and savage acts. He has shown a degree of thought and planning and sought to conceal and destroy evidence where he could.
“He has stretched out this process unnecessarily for the families of those men that died for no reason and I would like to express my sympathies for the loss of their loved ones.”
After a lengthy court trial, he was sentenced to life imprisonment with a whole life order.
Dawson’s murders of John and Paul followed another series of shocking crimes that rocked the UK.
Raoul Moat shot his ex-girlfriend Samantha Stobartt on July 3, 2010, after fatally shooting her new partner, Chris Brown.
Just a day later, Moat attacked a police officer named David Rathband after calling the police to announce his plan.
Sadly, David was blinded by the attack and committed suicide two years later.
The string of horrific crimes led the police to mobilise 160 officers to find Moat, though the search ended when he took his own life on July 10.
Moat’s terrible crimes took place just weeks before Dawson murdered John David Matthews.
It is thought that Moat’s actions may have inspired Dawson’s horrifying murders.
Dawson’s terrifying crime spree will be examined in Tracking a Serial Killer: True Crime Presents, which will air on ITV1.
The hour-long documentary will feature interviews with the people who helped bring Dawson to justice.

THE Masked Singer fans have landed on a TV legend being behind Dressed Crab’s huge mask.
Viewers watching the googly eyed crustaceans on Saturday night were adamant they’d nailed down the celeb.
One said on X: “Crab is Ru Paul” as another agreed: “Dressed Crab has to be Ru Paul, surely.”
One more wrote on X: “We need to have a talk about how ru paul is dressed crab…”
Clues point to Dressed Crab being American and working with fashion.
The crab also told the panel: “I came out of my shell”.
However, fans have noted Dressed Crab has a powerful, soulful voice, appearing to have singing experience and said they couldn’t possibly be Drag Race star Ru.
Taking to X, another fan rubbished the idea of Dressed Crab being Ru Paul, saying: “WHY are people saying dressed crab is Ru Paul? Have you never heard him sing!”
Another said: “People who think dressed crab is ru Paul like tell me you haven’t actually listened to any of the songs without telling me.”
As the beloved ITV guessing game continues, Dressed Crab has had fans scratching their head as they attempt to figure out their identity.
The crooner may have already been cracked by panelist Mo Gilligan who named them as another huge star.
He floated Seal, known for his sultry hits including smash Kiss From A Rose.
“If dressed crab is anyone other than seal, I’ll eat my foot,” one viewer agreed.
While another noted: “Dressed Crab gotta be Seal I’m betting on this”
British singer Seal is famed for his hit 1995 song, Kiss From A Rose, and throughout his career has earned three Brit Awards, four Grammy Awards and an MTV Video Music Award.
What clues are there for Dressed Crab’s identity?
