A SCHOOLBOY died on a bike ride with his dad when he slammed into a telegraph pole after his brakes failed, an inquest heard.
Rufus Pomeroy, 12, had travelled to Hay-on-Wye, Powys, for a planned camping trip when the horror unfolded.
WNSRufus Pomeroy died while on a camping trip with his dad[/caption]
An inquest heard Rufus realised his brakes were not working and would push his bike until the terrain was flat.
But the schoolboy was on a road he did not know “which quickly descended into a steep hill”.
Rufus, of Bristol, lost control of the bike and suffered a “heavy collision” with a telegraph pole on May 28 last year.
Dad William, who had stopped near a farm gate, found Rufus lying unconscious on his back and his bike on the ground.
He was rushed to hospital but died from catastrophic head injuries that day.
The inquest was told Rufus, who had “autistic tendencies” was not wearing a helmet.
Coroner Rachel Knight ruled an accidental verdict.
She said: “Sadly, likely due to the speed he achieved and his lack of working brakes, Rufus lost control of his bike and suffered a heavy collision with a telegraph pole.
“Rufus was not wearing a helmet, and sustained catastrophic head injuries.
“He was taken to hospital, and tragically he died.”
Rufus, who was a pupil at Redland Green School, was described by headteacher Ben Houghton as “a lovely and valued member of our school community”.
He said at the time that the school community had been “deeply saddened” and “devastated” by the loss.
In a letter to parents, the headteacher wrote: “I would like to express our heartfelt thoughts and condolences to Rufus’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.”

VIRGIN Media customers will find two extra channels on their boxes from today – and it’s great news for reality TV lovers.
Each channel specialises in two iconic shows well-known to Brits with back-to-back episodes aired 24/7.
GettyA channel dedicated to Hell’s Kitchen is among the new channels[/caption]
HandoutThe other channel shows nothing but Eggheads[/caption]
First up is a Hell’s Kitchen channel, led by fiery chef Gordon Ramsay.
Viewers will find the special channel on number 233.
And the other channel is everything Eggheads, with classic episodes of the long-running quiz show where amateur quiz players take on super-brain champions.
The Eggheads channel sits at number 253.
Both channels are new streamed broadcasts which are beamed into living rooms via the internet instead of your traditional cable set-up.
Virgin Media has already introduced a number of these channels – known as FAST (free ad-supported TV) channels – to TV boxes.
Virgin TV already has around 30, including favourites Tipping Point and Deal or No Deal.
Unlike most streamed channel services that are run through an app, these appear directly on the Virgin TV programme guide.
The move comes as Brits are faced with ever-increasing TV bills.
Rival Sky revealed this morning that the average customer will see their bill rise by 6.2% from April 1.
Netflix recently announced subscriptions will rise in the US – and experts expect the UK will follow suit soon.
Recent data from Kantar suggests more Brits are opting for Netflix’s cheaper ad tier subscription which costs £4.99.
Research indicates that one in three new subscribers are going for the ad option to save money.
Meanwhile, traditional TV providers face yet more channel loses.
“Reality TV doesn’t just entertain us, but tests our knowledge, gives us something to chat about for those water cooler moments, and most importantly, brings TV fans together,” said David Bouchier, Chief TV and Entertainment Officer at Virgin Media O2.
“The expansion of our streaming channel offering is brilliant news for our customers, and with some of the most recognisable reality content available to watch our customers can sit back, relax and enjoy extra value – and extra drama – on us.”
The new channels are available on Stream, V6 and Virgin TV 360 boxes.
Stream swapping – the easy way to cut your bills?
Here’s what Sean Keach, The Sun’s Head of Technology and Science, thinks…
It’s no secret that TV streaming apps are costing more and more.
Not only are prices shooting up, but we find ourselves asked to pay for an increasing number of apps and services.
And when you combine those TV bills with your music streaming, mobile and internet fees, and every other drain on your bank account, it all starts to get a bit much.
One of the best ways to cut your TV bills is to simply cancel all of your streaming subscriptions and only sign up to one per month.
Pick an app like Netflix, Disney+, or Apple TV+ and smash through all of the content you want to watch on that app.
Then the next month, swap to something else.
And once you’ve done them all, you can cycle back to the start again.
It’s an easy way to avoid forking out for a rolling library of streaming apps with more content than you could possibly watch.
Also don’t forget that paid-for streaming isn’t the only game in town.
There are loads of apps that don’t cost a penny to enjoy, and downloading a few will unlock thousands of live TV channels plus tens of thousands of movies and shows.
Try apps like Tubi, The Roku Channel, Plex, and Pluto TV to get some ad-supported television without having to pay any monthly fees.

NICO O’REILLY did not expect to play a minute when he was selected in Manchester City’s squad for their four match pre-season tour of the USA in July.
But three weeks later he had scored against Barcelona in Orlando – and also had a Community Shield winner’s medal in his pocket after holding his own against five-time Champions League winner Casemiro against rivals Manchester United at Wembley.

O’Reilly recovering from a serious ankle injury sustained in 2023
He was denied a deadline day move to Chelsea, as City feared another ‘Cole Palmer’ situation and one of their academy lads starring in West London.
HOW DO THEY PLAY AND WHO DO THEY REMIND YOU OF?
Well, anyone who follows City’s youngsters should forget what they thought they knew about O’Reilly – because Guardiola has other ideas.
The boss announced in the States – to the surprise of everyone – that O’Reilly, 19, could be a deputy for Rodri as a holding midfielder.
Praise doesn’t come much higher than that at City.
However it raised some eyebrows as he has generally played further forward – even as a No10 or a false nine – while coming through the academy system at City.
But maybe his versatility is what appeals to the Etihad boss, who does like a midfielder who can fill a variety of positions
After a spell on the sidelines with injury last season, the England Under-20 star returned to training and Guardiola was shocked by how much he had grown.
The hope at City is he can use that physicality and grow into the role that Rodri plays so effectively as he reads the game particularly well.
He also showed that he is much more than just a stopper with his superbly taken goal against Barcelona in Orlando.
That was more like the O’Reilly they knew at the City Football Academy – where he had a reputation for scoring eye-catching goals.
His Under-21 coaches say he would be capable of doing a variety of different jobs for Pep and that he has all the attributes to be a top player.
TELL US ABOUT THEIR RISE
He’s been playing for his boyhood club City since the Under nines and has come through in the same cohort as Rico Lewis.
He made the bench for Pep Guardiola’s first team at Brighton in spring 2023 but then a serious ankle injury stopped his progress.
However he has picked up where he left off. At City they still talk about a scorpion kick he scored against Middlesbrough for the youth team and a 40-yard lob against United in the junior derby.
WHAT ARE THE EXPERTS SAYING?
Ben Wilkinson is now boss of City’s EDS but has seen O’Reilly come through the ranks. He said: “Historically, he’s played as a No8 – or a No10 in the academy.
“But his ceiling is very high – and he’s got more attributes than people give him credit for. His technical level is very high. Hopefully he can put his physicality into his game because he’s got a lot of things you need to be a top midfielder.
“His performances were one of the highlights of the tour so hopefully Pep has learned if he needs to use him then he can.
He’s a guy who will be a player
Guardiola on O'Reilly
Guardiola himself said: “He’s a guy who will be a player. He was injured for a long time last season.
“He came back in the middle of the season, trained with us and I said ‘Wow. This guy is big.”
He’s about 6ft 2in and has a presence about him.
WHAT DOES THE NEXT 12 MONTHS HOLD?
Guardiola insisted he would be part of the first team squad this season and he has played a couple of times despite the return of Ilkay Gundogan making an already congested scrap for midfield places even more crowded.
O’Reilly has started in the Carabao Cup against Watford and Tottenham – and made his Champions League bow against Sparta Prague before netting in the FA Cup against Salford.
He will hope there is more to come, especially after the move to London was rejected.
