‘We’re up and running’ declares Mark Bourke as Kerry LGFA get off the mark in Division 1 with win over Waterford

KERRY chief Mark Bourke was relieved the Kingdom got on the board by securing their first win of the Lidl NFL Division 1 campaign at SETU Arena.

Goals in either half from Niamh Ní Chonchúir and Siofra O’Shea saw the Kingdom bounce back from a first-round loss at holders Armagh.

Kingdom chief Bourke, who replaced Declan Quill and Darragh Long ahead of the new season, said: “Getting any points on the board in this division is a relief. We’re up and running.

“We lost our shape in the first half because of the wind and the team we were playing.

“In the second half, we committed to keeping four up. It opened up the game and we saw some gaps.”

Waterford manager and Kerry native Tomás Mac an tSaoir, whose side beat Kildare last time out, hailed the display of debut keeper Gemma Corcoran.

The 16-year-old is the first Ballysaggart player to line out for the Déise at senior level and capped her bow with a couple of great saves.

Former Kingdom netminder Mac an tSaoir said: “An outstanding performance for a girl of her age — her bravery to come out and block two shots in the second half when Kerry were getting a squeeze on.

“Her courage and her bravery, that’s what she’s been showing in training.

“She has a great future ahead of her.”

The Munster rivals were level four times before O’Shea’s punched effort on 45 minutes set the Kingdom on their way.

Kerry trailed 0-6 to 1-2 at the interval, with the goal arriving on six minutes when a point attempt by Ní Chonchúir dropped into the corner of the Déise net.

The Kingdom made a triple substitution at the break.

One of those arrivals, Danielle O’Leary, kicked them into the lead four minutes into the second period after Rachel Dwyer got the leveller.

On 40 minutes, O’Shea bravely punched the ball to the net just ahead of advancing Déise keeper Corcoran to make it 2-4 to 0-6. Ciara McCarthy added a point.

Emma Murray, Lauren McGregor and Brid McMaugh reduced the deficit to two and Corcoran made two stunning saves from O’Leary.

But a late point from captain Anna Galvin sealed victory for Kerry.

I thought I picked up a ‘nursery bug’ from my kids but I was given six to 12 months to live after fighting to see a GP

A BUSY mum of two assumed she’d picked up a nursery bug from one of her kids when she was struck down with an irritating cold at the beginning of 2022.

But when Sibylle Schwarz’s winter cold refused to go away, she soon discovered a seemingly innocuous symptom she’d been experiencing was a sign of something more serious – oesophageal cancer.

The software engineer who lives near Preston recalled: “I didn’t know that a cough was a symptom.

“I have kids that go to nursery, so I was ill most of that winter. I noticed I was coughing in February and in March it was really starting to get annoying.

“I had a sore throat and would cough every time I was talking. It wasn’t until I developed a swallowing issue in May I thought something was not right.”

Sibylle faced a battle to have her concerns taken seriously.

The receptionist at her doctor’s surgery was dismissive, refused to book an appointment and told her to get anti-sickness tablets from a pharmacy.

Two weeks later, her condition had worsened.

She said: “I went back to the GP in June and there was a different receptionist. But she also said to go to the pharmacy. I told her I really, really needed to see a doctor and she booked me in for an appointment.

“The GP talked to me a little bit and then agreed to send me to have an endoscopy, just to be sure. She put me down on a waiting list and I got a call from that department two months later because I wasn’t listed as urgent.

“But by that point, I already couldn’t swallow food.”

As Sibylle was still breastfeeding her baby son at the time, she couldn’t be sedated to have an endoscopy – which led to the procedure, which involves a camera being inserted inside the body for internal analysis, being delayed further until the end of October.

She said: “I lost 25 kilos within those four months. I was in a very bad state. I couldn’t eat. I was losing my hair. My iron level was very, very low.

“The surgeon told me they wouldn’t have put me down for an endoscopy if I hadn’t lost so much weight. They didn’t believe me when I said I couldn’t eat any food.

“Then after the endoscopy, the surgeon apologised for being so presumptuous and told me the news that I had cancer.

“She discovered it was quite advanced, and that I might have only six to 12 months to live.”

One of the least survivable of all cancers

A chronic cough can be caused by heartburn, which in turn can also be a symptom of oesophagus cancer; one of the least survivable of all cancers.

According to recent data from Digestive Cancers Europe, analysed by Action Against Heartburn for Oesophageal Cancer Awareness Month, the UK oesophageal cancer rate is higher than most of Europe.

Data has shown that the UK has 14.2 cases of oesophageal cancer per 100,000 people compared to 3.5 in Italy, 4.4 in Spain, 7.0 in France and 7.7 in Germany.

As symptoms of the disease are often mistaken for heartburn or other stomach issues, the cancer can be overlooked.

It’s often diagnosed in advanced stages due to vague symptoms, leading to poor outcomes for patients.

Sadly, less than 20 per cent of people diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in the UK will survive for more than five years.

I knew that there are different kinds of cancer, but I had not heard of oesophagus cancer

Sibylle Schwarz

Sibylle said: “I received my diagnosis one day before my daughter’s seventh birthday. The first thought I had was that I would not see her turning eight.

“I was just completely shocked. My father died of pancreatic cancer. So, I had heard about that, and how dangerous it is. And I knew that there are different kinds of cancer, but I had not heard of oesophagus cancer.

“Of course, as soon as I came home, I Googled it and saw that it’s quite bad.”

After finding medical staff had been reluctant to take her concerns seriously, Sibylle was given small relief as she was fast-tracked for various scans, including CT and PET, after the growth was discovered.

Treatment began six weeks after the diagnosis with four rounds of chemotherapy to shrink the tumour in preparation for surgery.

She said: “Unfortunately, the chemotherapy wasn’t really helpful.

“It did shrink the tumour in the beginning, and I could eat a little bit, but then it just grew again. I needed a feeding tube, and I couldn’t even swallow water anymore.

“The surgeon had an appointment with me and discussed all the outcomes of the scans. She was very pessimistic and said she was unsure if she could take it out through surgery.

“I said, ‘If you can’t, then just close me up again, and that’s fine. I want you to try. I’d rather die than not try.’ And she did, and luckily, she could take it all out.”

After initially being told that she may only have six months to live, and that treatment might only extend her life for a further six months, Sibylle is adjusting to her new way of life two years on from her surgery.

She said: “I feel fine now. I can eat most things again, smaller portions, of course, but I have energy. I can take care of my kids. I’m turning 40 this year. It’s in the middle of half term, so maybe I will go away for a week or something.

“Yesterday, I had a talk with someone, and he asked me, ‘What is your five-year plan?’ As a cancer patient, you don’t really like to think ahead so far.

It would be great if life would just not change, just everything stays as it is, everybody will be healthy

Sibylle Schwarz

“In five years, my son will be eight, my daughter, oh God, will be in the middle of puberty.

“It would be great if life would just not change, just everything stays as it is, everybody will be healthy.

“During treatment, I only thought about my kids. My daughter had already gone through a lot. We had a bit of a rough start in her life and then we moved from Germany to Lancashire, so she lost all her friends. I didn’t want her to lose her mother, too. I was always thinking about that.

“And then, of course, there was my son, who was only a baby and was a very, very great sunshine in my life. They helped me to survive.”

With awareness of oesophageal cancer being comparatively low compared to other cancer causes and campaigns, Sibylle hopes her story can help others get the treatment they need sooner rather than later.

She advised: “Certainly push a bit more. You always have to be the bad patient and you always have to push. I was never that person. I always waited my turn.

The warning signs of oesophageal cancer

OESOPHAGEAL cancer is a cancer of the food pipe.

It affects 9,400 people in the UK every year, and most people are over the age of 60.

Smoking increases your risk of the disease, as does being overweight, drinking alcohol and having conditions like Barrett’s oesophagus, where the cells lining your oesophagus have become abnormal.

Only 12 per cent of patients survive for 10 or more years after being diagnosed.

There are around 8,000 oesophageal cancer deaths in the UK every year – or 22 every day.

Early diagnosis is key, so recognising the symptoms is vital. The most common include:

  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Indigestion or heartburn that doesn’t go away
  • Pain in the throat or behind the breastbone

But some people also experience a cough, hoarseness, dark poo, tiredness and food coming back up after swallowing.

“Of course, you have to be polite, but you have to push and advocate for yourself. And if I would have known that, then that might have led to me being diagnosed faster.”

She added: “I am very grateful to my surgeon. Even though she was pessimistic and not convinced that she could help, she did listen to me at the end and more importantly her skills and determination saved my life. I will never stop thanking her for that.”

As a result fans think Danielle has a problem with Ekin

But it wasn’t Elma who viewers insisted has a problem with the Turkish actress.

Instead they think Danielle Sellers gave Ekin-Su a “dirty look” and took to social media to have their say.

One wrote: “Maybe it’s just the edit but I swear Danielle is always giving Ekin dirty looks and being cold towards her.”

Another said: “Danielle is so mad at Ekin for no damn reason.”

Someone else commented: “Danielle’s face screams jealous of Ekin-Su.”

And a fourth added: “Danielle hates Ekin and she’s not even hiding it.”

Ekin and Danielle were recently locked in a love triangle with Curtis Pritchard.

He and Ekin had been coupled up from the start but his head was turned when Danielle entered as a bombshell.

Despite leaving Ekin furious when he confessed to wanting to get to know Danielle, Curtis made up for it by sticking during the latest recoupling.

But last night fans also think Curtis revealed he has feelings for another one of the girls.

As Catherine Agbaje tried to get his pulse racing during the heart rate challenge, viewers insisted Curtis couldn’t take his eyes off of her.

One wrote: “I KNOW i did not just see curtis grab catherine’s bum.”

And another said: “Now why was Curtis looking Catherine in the eye like that.”
