Gabriel Bannigan banks first win as Monaghan boss thanks to Conor McCarthy penalty in high-scoring affair with Cavan
CONOR McCARTHY’S spot-kick sent Monaghan on their way to an opening-day NFL Division 2 win over Cavan.
The Farney were dealt a blow last week when Conor McManus called time on his inter-county career.
![25 January 2025; Gerard Smith of Cavan is tackled by Ryan Wylie, right, and Dylan Byrne of Monaghan during the Allianz Football League Division 2 match between Cavan and Monaghan at Kingspan Breffni in Cavan. But a superstar remains in the form of goalie Rory Beggan — who booted three two-pointers, showing the new rules will suit him down to the ground.
Monaghan ultimately ran out eight-points winners over Cavan at Kingspan Breffni Park.
The game was an entertaining one as both teams served up a treat with the new rules on show.
Gabriel Bannigan — in charge of Monaghan for the first time in the league — conducted matters on the sideline.
And they responded with a clinical display, even without McManus in attack.
Cavan were up for the fight but they were on the back foot from early on after McCarthy’s penalty inside just two minutes.
That effort handed the Farney a one-point lead at the break as they played into a strong wind.
There were poor conditions underfoot too though players made little of it.
Cavan bravely fought their game of catch-up.
But with Ryan McAnespie and Gavin McPhillips on song, Monaghan rammed home their advantage with a second goal from David Garland three minutes into the second half.
The dynamic Dara McVeety led a Cavan fightback in the final quarter as the Blues hit four points without reply.
That cut Monaghan’s lead to six points with seven minutes of normal time left to play.
But Cavan missed too many chances on the night — with at least three goal opportunities left behind them.
And Monaghan never looked like losing down the stretch with Jack McCarron nailing a peach at the death to seal the deal in the local derby.

Where did it all go wrong for Wynne Evans? Inside his disastrous Strictly journey from ‘gropes’ to jibes
HE was everybody’s favourite opera singer from the world’s most annoying advert – bursting with potential on the dance floor.
But today Wynne Evans is at the centre of another Strictly controversy and fans have been left baffled about why his journey on the dance competition went so wrong?
![Katya Jones and Wynne Evans on Strictly Come Dancing.](https://www.thesun.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/strictlys-katya-jones-wynne-evans-940467775.jpg?strip=all&w=540)
![Group photo of the "Strictly Come Dancing: The Live Tour 2025" cast.](https://www.thesun.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/kai-widdrington-jamie-borthwick-robbie-964200279.jpg?strip=all&w=960)
The Welsh opera singer, 52, was unable to dance at last night’s live tour stop in Glasgow due to an ankle injury.
Behind the scenes though, he had something much more important going on – he was being quizzed over his latest gaffe.
Just last week he was recorded suggesting a three-way sex session with presenter Janette Manrara, using the term “spit roast”.
His remark came at a photocall to launch the Strictly live tour, which pro Janette, 41, is hosting.
He reportedly pulled a suggestive face at actor Jamie Borthwick as Janette moved between them — which is when Evans allegedly made the joke.
Wynne has apologised saying: “My language was inappropriate and unacceptable, for which I sincerely apologise.”
BBC and Strictly Live producers said: “We have made it clear to Wynne we do not tolerate such behaviour on tour.”
Janette’s spokeswoman said she had been “unaware of this comment”.
‘Grope’ joke
It comes just months after Wynne and his pro partner Katya Jones were forced to say sorry for a “joke” that saw her move his hand from her waist during the BBC show.
In another moment, Jones appeared to not want to high-five her celebrity partner, which they called “a running joke”.
Wynne revealed his upset over the situation, telling his Radio Wales listeners: “I’m absolutely heartbroken by the things that have been written about me in the last day.
“It’s not nice to live in that time, but basically Katya and I are really, really close and we’re really good friends, and on Saturday night we made a stupid joke.
“It was a stupid joke that went wrong, OK? We thought it was funny. It wasn’t funny.
“It was been totally misinterpreted.”
![Two dancers in a ballroom dance pose.](https://www.thesun.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/janette-manrara-tasha-ghouri-montell-964407736_89b6de.jpg?strip=all&w=712)
![Group of people dancing at a party.](https://www.thesun.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/image_942dac.png?strip=all&w=670)
At the time Katya insisted that the controversy had overshadowed their performance “for absolutely no reason”.
She added: “Quite frankly I actually can’t bear sitting here watching this man being portrayed as someone he’s not.
“In fact it couldn’t be further away from the truth.
“So I have to make absolutely clear, that this whole incident with the hand and the high five on Saturday night, it was an inside joke between Wynne and I.
“Was it a silly joke? Yes. Was it a bad joke? Yes.
“However, it was a joke and even the idea that it made me feel uncomfortable or offended in any way is totally nonsense.
“Those that have doubts, you guys have got it wrong.
“So hopefully this will be the end of it.”
Unfortunately it wasn’t the end of it for the pair and they ended up getting the boot not long after.

Crude comment
It then emerged that Wynne come under fire again for allegedly telling a “crude” joke to one of the show’s make-up artists.
Insiders claim the opera star made a joke that the folds of his double chin “looked like a vagina”.
According to the Mirror, he made the remark ahead of the Strictly Come Dancing launch show last month.
A source told the outlet: “It was a bit of a vulgar dad joke.”
No official complaint has been made, and the insider added: “Wynne clearly didn’t mean any offence, but you have to be a little bit careful these days.”
Chaperones have been put in place on Strictly during rehearsals last year after a review was launched by the BBC following contestant complaints.
Wynne also performed in the 25th anniversary of The Phantom Of The Opera and won 2023’s Celebrity MasterChef.

Charlotte Finch used bargain buys from Amazon, Dunelm and Temu, and even created her own wall art to transform her space – and we think it looks fabulous.
Thrilled with the epic overhaul, Charlotte took to social media to share before and after snaps of her toilet, leaving many open-mouthed.
The DIY lover, who is from Somerset, took to DIY On A Budget, a private Facebook group with 2.2 million members and wrote: “Plain and simple, although time consuming, as the dalmatian print was all done free hand.
“But it’s completed and I love it.”
Charlotte then opened up to Fabulous about the DIY overhaul and explained: “Being able to transform a room on a cost efficient budget gives me great satisfaction and makes me enjoy the look of my own work even more.
“I had painted the feature wall with a £4.49 small tub of Matte black paint [from Amazon].
“I upcycled an old broken artificial garden plant and I made my own wall prints on my laptop and then framed them.”
Not only this, but Charlotte also saved herself some cash by buying accessories for the room in the sale.
The savvy shopper continued: “I then benefited from the January sales and purchased the room accessories, all cheaply from Dunelm.
“The tiles were transformed by a pack of transfers, purchased on Temu.
“I am overall really pleased with the outcome.
“On completion, I posted on the ‘DIY On A Budget’ page on Facebook, where I was pleasantly surprised by all the lovely comments, messages and hearing other peoples opinions and positive feedback.”

Kildare and Wexford set early pace in NFL Divisions 3 and 4 as they coast past Fermanagh and London
KILDARE and Wexford set the early pace in Divisions 3 and 4.
After a 2024 to forget, new Lilywhites manager Brian Flanagan saw his side explode out of the blocks in Newbridge and never look back against fellow relegated side FERMANAGH, romping home 2-24 to 1-12.
![25 January 2025; Darragh Swords of Kildare in action against Declan McCusker of Fermanagh during the Allianz Football League Division 2 match between Kildare and Fermanagh at Cedral St. Conleth's Park in Newbridge, Kildare. Mick O’Grady and Declan McCusker traded the first two points of the evening but Kildare then set the tone with seven unanswered scores.
Fermanagh tried to make a dent in their deficit and Darragh McGurn raised the first orange flag of the night.
And there were just five between the sides when Shane McGullion made it 0-18 to 1-10 with still over 20 minutes left.
Kildare moved through the gears in the final quarter, however, striking goals from Darragh Kirwan and Ryan Sinkey, two-pointers from Alex Beirne and David Hyland and restricting Fermanagh to just two further McGurn points.
In Division 4, WEXFORD made short work of LONDON, the Models home and hosed by half-time of a 2-24 to 2-6 win.
Seán Nolan and Páraic Hughes put two-pointers on the board early on at Wexford Park as the home side raced into a five-point lead before London got off the mark.
It was 1-13 to 1-2 at the end of a one-sided first half and by the end, John Hegarty’s side had nine scorers from play, Nolan finishing with 0-9 while Hughes bagged 1-2.
CARLOW will feel that they should have joined their neighbours at the top of the table but their game with TIPPERARY finished in a 2-13 to 1-16 draw at Dr Cullen Park.
Thirty-eight minutes in, Tipp’s Ben Comerford and the hosts’ Ross Dunphy had traded goals to leave it at 2-10 to 1-7 in favour of the Barrowsiders.
However, after putting 13 scoreless minutes behind them with a flurry of three points in a row from John Murphy, Mikey Bambrick and Conor Doyle, Carlow again failed to score from the 56th minute onwards and were ultimately reeled in for a draw.
Cian Smith, Steven O’Brien, with a two-pointer, and Seán O’Connor all kicked frees for the Premier in the last five minutes to tie it up
I’m a 34-year-old mum and tried the unrecognisable make-up trend – people say I look like a new person
WE all like experimenting with our make-up, especially when we are off on a night out.
But most of us are bare-faced with our hair in a bun during the day so people rarely see our make-up skills.
![A 34-year-old mother attempting unrecognizable makeup.](https://www.thesun.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/people-say-i-look-like-966564951.jpg?strip=all&w=540)
But a new trend on TikTok is giving women the chance to show off their impressive transformations.
The trend already has 43.9 million videos under the hashtag unrecognisable make-up and Jennifer Oliver was quick to join in.
The 34-year-old mum from London took to the app to show off her skills.
In the first clip, Jennifer had no make-up on and hadn’t styled her hair and seemed fed up as she looked into the camera.
But just seconds later, people say she looked like a brand new woman.
Jennifer had styled her hair into a gorgeous blowout and her skin was glowing.
She added a light smokey eyeshadow to her eyes, using a white eyeliner on her waterline to really make her eyes pop.
Jennifer also added a bold red lip and put on her best sparkly earrings to give the old Hollywood siren look.
People were in awe of her make-up skills as she asked ‘How did I do?’ in relation to the trend.
The mum is also a professional make-up artist and was titled London’s best by Glamour Magazine.

Speaking to Fabulous she broke down the products she used on her face.
Jennifer revealed: “Lips are Bobbi Brown chocolate Lipliner and Metro red luxe lipstick
“Eyes are Make-up Mario master matte palette, with Urban Decay space cowboy eyeshadow on the lid for sparkle.
“Skin is Armani luminous silk foundation, Hourglass vanish airbrush concealer, Givenchy prism libre powder in Rose voile to set undereye, and Westman Atelier baby cheeks blush stick in coquette. Use a Trigwell sponge to make the skin look flawless!”
Top 3 beauty products every woman should be using
Hayley Walker, Beauty Expert at Justmylook shared the holy-grail products every woman needs to be using.
A cleanser, SPF, and hair oil are must-haves within beauty routines.
A cleanser is crucial for healthy skin as it removes dirt, oil, and other impurities for flawless skin. This skincare step not only cleanses the face and removes dirt, but also prevents breakouts and premature skin ageing, helping you maintain a healthy, youthful, and blemish-free complexion.
The Aveeno Face Calm+ Restore Nourishing Oat Cleanser is a go-to of mine due to its gentle formula that soothes and restores the skin’s appearance and texture.
SPF is non-negotiable and should be in everyone’s daily skincare routine.
Even on cooler, cloudier days, our skin is exposed to the sun’s UV rays which can be harmful to unprotected skin and even lead to damage. These damages include sunburn, pigmentation changes, and wrinkles which can impact the skin’s texture and appearance. In some cases, prolonged exposure to UV rays can cause skin cancer.
Applying SPF daily prevents these damages and protects the skin from harmful rays. I recommend the Beauty Of Joseon Rice & Prebiotic Sunscreen PA++++ SPF50+ for its lightweight, non-clumping texture that absorbs quickly for a natural finish and maximum protection.
Hair oil has many benefits and should be regularly used. This treatment can strengthen and protect the hair from external stressors while improving its appearance and shine. Regularly applying hair oil can also reduce breakage and even encourage hair growth for longer, fuller locks. Hair oils also target the scalp, reducing dandruff and improving its health through exfoliation.
I recommend using this deeply nourishing treatment a couple of times a week or more depending on the hair’s moisture levels. The Hair Syrup Rapunzel Pre-Wash Oil Treatment is a nutrient-rich treatment that revitalises strands to promote a happy scalp and healthy-looking locks. Apply the syrup throughout damp hair before washing; massage from root to tip and allow the formula to penetrate strands before rinsing and styling.
The clip has since gone viral on her TikTok account @jenniferoliver_makeup with over 2.5 million views and 228k likes.
People were quick to take to the comments in awe of Jennifer’s incredible make-up skills
One person wrote: “The only one I’ve seen that is really unrecognisable..here is your trophy for winning the trend.”
Another commented: “Dang that’s like a different person.”
“WHAT!! I was already thinking before you’re naturally pretty but the GLAM is gorg! I look like I’ve had a scrap in Superdrug when I try to do my make up,” penned a third.
Meanwhile a fourth said: “girl my jaw DROPPED.”
“Amazing!! So beautiful both ways,” claimed a fifth.
Someone else added: “Best one I’ve seen.”

And it lays claim to have one of the largest clubs for younger guests called the Scott Dunn Explorers Kids Club.
Outside is a huge splash park, with a pirate ship and two-storey castle.
Fountains, water slides and shallow pools make up the gated area so no worries about kids wandering off.
Sports activities range from beach volleyball, treasure hunts, baking and yoga, to water sports like snorkelling.
Football mad kids can try out the Football Escape course, which was created by Rio Ferdinand along with Bobby Zamora.
And there is even a new sleep room with cots and toddler beds for when it gets a bit much for younger guests.
Kids are divided into ages – ‘Globetrotters’ are for four months to three years old, ‘Adventurers’ are three to five years old and ‘Voyagers’ are five to eight years old.
The oldest group are the ‘Pioneers’ for kids eight to 12 years old.
The website states: “Explorers Kids Club at Parklane is one of Europe’s biggest kids’ clubs with approximately 3000 square meters of adventurous and enjoyable facilities.
“Open daily all year round, it has been styled to offer an adventurous and enjoyable place for children up to 12-years-old.”
It has also won over families, with most of the reviews on TripAdvisor giving it five stars.
One parent wrote: “Kids club is biggest and best we experienced so far. Lots of things for kids of all ages.”
Another wrote: “The kids club was one of the best I’ve seen.”
A third agreed: “Our kids couldn’t be taken away from.”
They also raved about the staff, with some even calling them “angels”.
The club costs around €35 per child for a half day stay.

Outside of the kids club, the five-star resort has both rooms and suites as well as villas.
There are four pools to choose from – one with seawater, one that’s adults-only and, one with a slide and one that’s indoors.
If you need to relax even more, there is the massive Kalloni Spa with 14 treatments rooms as well as five pools.
Tennis courts, football pitches and a gym are also on-site.
Despite being a five-star hotel, it doesn’t cost as much as you’d think with rooms for as little as £200 a night.
Getting to Limassol is easy too, with non-stop flights around 4h35.
The cheapest deal we’ve found is £40 return with Ryanair, travelling to Paphos Airport which is around an hour from Limassol.
Otherwise you can fly to Larnaca with Wizz Air for £42 return, which is 30 minutes away.
If you don’t want to stay at a family resort, there is also the new City of Dreams Mediterranean in Cyprus – the largest casino resort of its kind in Europe.
