Conor Loftus secures All-Ireland IFC title for Crossmolina with last-gasp penalty to seal emotional victory

Mayo star Conor Loftus set his grief aside to clinch the All-Ireland club IFC title for Crossmolina with a last-gasp goal.

The Croke Park decider was initially scheduled for January 12 but was postponed following the tragic death of Loftus’ partner Roisin Cryan.

Conor Loftus of Crossmolina Deel Rovers made himself available for the final following following the tragic death of his partner Roisin Cryan

Loftus made himself available for the fresh fixture and capped a strong performance with the winning goal from a 69th minute penalty.

It was virtually the last play of the game and when full-time came, an emotional Loftus walked straight to the tunnel and the dressing-room.

GAA President Jarlath Burns spoke movingly of a difficult few weeks for the club and the families whilst team captain Mikie Loftus dedicated the win to Roisin Cryan.

Cross’ manager Benson said: “The last two weeks, three weeks, have been really tough in the club, very emotional. Obviously you saw Conor there, as soon as the game is over he’s bolted down the tunnel.

“Like, while we’re all excited and delighted, our thoughts have to go to them, to Conor Loftus and the Cryans, it’s obviously really difficult for him.

“To see him bolt down the tunnel after winning an All-Ireland in Croke Park, I just think it says a lot about the fact that he could come out and play today for us. I have to acknowledge that.

“It’s a testament to the man he is, to be able to change his focus, to be even thinking about an All-Ireland final in the circumstances.”

A simmering game that was level five times in the first-half came to the boil after the break with Cross’ surging 0-11 to 0-8 clear.

Man of the Match Niall Coggins came strongly into the game and hit three second-half points in total.

But Ballinderry, All-Ireland senior champions in 2002, put themselves in pole position with five points in a row between the 53rd and 59th minutes to lead by two in stoppage time.

Ryan Bell, sub Daniel McKinless and captain Gareth McKinless all came to the fore for the Derry side.

But Coggins pulled back a point for Cross’ to leave one in it and then sub Stephen Duffy was controversially adjudged to have been fouled by goalkeeper Ben McKinless for a penalty.

That’s when Loftus stepped up for his pot shot at glory, declining to take the easy option of a point which would have forced extra-time.

Cops hunt ruthless gang after four swanky homes featured in hit TV comedy Ted Lasso are raided in £2m spree

A GANG is being hunted after a £2million raid on homes featured in TV show Ted Lasso.

Locals say they were targeted after appearing in the comedy starring Jason Sudeikis and Hannah Waddingham.

Four homes, including a £3.3million property used by Hannah Waddingham’s character, were targeted by suspected professional criminals.

Victims include rock star Richard Ashcroft, who had about £1million of valuables stolen.

Residents suspect the gang was attracted to the multimillion-pound homes around Richmond Green after seeing them in the Apple TV+ series.

One said: “It’s devastating. People are terrified they are going to be hit next.”

An eight-bedroom home was the first to be raided, on November 2. The burglars stole a safe containing valuables including jewellery.

The traumatised tenants then moved out, according to neighbours.

Early last month, raiders tried to break into a home used in Ted Lasso by Hannah’s businesswoman character Rebecca Welton.

But the occupants were woken and the suspects fled, leaving a ladder in the garden. A four-bed house nearby was then trashed on December 18.

A bolted-down safe, said to contain about £400,000 of jewellery, was taken. The occupants had only just left, raising suspicions they were being watched.

Then, on December 29, The Verve star Richard Ashcroft and musician wife Kate Radley had their £8million home ransacked while they were away.

A neighbour called the police when alarms went off but the raiders left by the time officers came. The estimated £1million of items stolen included a Patek Philippe watch.

A neighbour said: “The police would have stood a good chance of catching the gang if they turned up when called.

“But now the gang are free to find their next target. We’re all now living in fear.”

Police are linking the break-ins, which they believe were carried out by a team of professional burglars from South America.

It is believed four olive-skinned suspects, wearing caps and gloves and wielding crowbars, were involved in the burglaries, while two others kept watch.

Some locals believe the gang targeted the area thanks to the hugely popular Ted Lasso series, which stars Jason Sudeikis as a US coach managing fictional London side AFC Richmond.

Much of it is set around Richmond Green, featuring listed Georgian buildings, luxurious homes, quaint pubs, cafés and shops.

One local added: “You don’t have to be Sherlock Holmes to work out that someone from the gang probably watched the programme at some point. They must have realised the rich pickings to be had from the area.”

The same gang may also have been behind other burglaries in the wider Richmond area, with worried residents meeting police.

Met Temporary Det Supt Dan O’Sullivan said: “We are aware of a number of burglaries in the Richmond Green area and are taking proactive steps to deter offenders and reassure residents.

“Enquiries are ongoing. It is believed that some of the break-ins may be linked.”

I lost everything after my air fryer exploded and burned down my house – it broke me and I cried for 10 hours

A SINGLE mum lost everything she owned in a fire after her air fryer exploded.

Angel Carpenter, 23, thought it was a joke when she got a call to say her house was on fire at around 11am on January 24.

She returned to find her home destroyed – losing all her furniture and her 15-month-old daughter Frankie’s clothes and toys.

Angel was told by firefighters the blaze could have been caused by an electric fault which led the air fryer and two aerosols to explode.

The fire also burst the water pipes which put out the flames.

Now her mum Emma, 43, is hoping to fundraise £4,500 to refurnish her daughter’s home.

Admin worker Angel said: “They said it was something to do with a plug socket or it could have been a dodgy air fryer.

“That much had melted they couldn’t tell what it was. Everything I have worked has gone into that house.

“It was such a shock. I cried for ten hours. It broke me. I have lost everything in that house.”

Angel was at work when she got the call from a neighbour to say her house was on fire.

Her daughter Frankie was being looked after by Emma.

Angel, from Bridgnorth, Shropshire, said: “They said your house is on fire. I thought it was a joke.

“I didn’t expect this. I always double check everything is turned off.”

She was able to retrieve some clothes from her property but they stink of smoke.

Angel said: “Four washes later and we still haven’t got out the smell.

“We managed to get the photos out of the frames and some of her first birthday cards. I’m going to laminate them.”

House fires linked to air fryers rocket to record high

HOUSE fires linked to air fryers have rocketed to a record high in England, figures show.

Firefighters named the appliance in reports on 146 incidents in the 12 months to March — 57 per cent up on the previous year.

But the real number could be even higher — because the kitchen gizmo is not listed as an option on outdated forms that record the cause of domestic blazes.

Pensioner James Cooper, 76, had a “lucky escape” when his device burst into flames while he was cooking chips at his home in Cheltenham.

He said: “I could smell intense burning. It was a complete surprise to see it was the fryer itself that was on fire.”

A house in Harlow, Essex, was heavily damaged by a fire — with it blamed on an electrical fault from an air fryer.

Other recent blazes linked to the device have been recorded in Shropshire, Bedfordshire, London, Greater Manchester and Edinburgh.

The increase comes after air fryers rose in popularity during the cost-of-living crisis, due to their energy efficiency.

The Home Office is reviewing the Incident Recording System to see if more categories, such as fryers, need to be added.

A spokesman said: “We regularly review the data that we receive from Fire and Rescue Services to ensure emerging risks are accurately captured.”

Unfortunately Angel does not have any house insurance and is living with her mum until she can fix and refurbish her home.

She said: “I should have taken out fire insurance or house insurance. You don’t think of it. It doesn’t feel real. It feels like a dream.”

Angel is thankful to anyone who has donated to the fundraiser.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue were unable to provide information on the cause of the fire.

They said: “At 11:17 on Friday, 24 January, 2025, SFRS Fire Control received a call reporting a fire classified as House Fire in Bridgnorth.

“Two fire appliances were mobilised from Bridgnorth and Much Wenlock. An Operations officer was in attendance.

“Fire crews used two hose reel jets, covering jet, ventilation fan and 4 breathing apparatus.
