‘It was a privilege’ – Funeral details for ‘kind-hearted’ Waterford skier who died while trying to take a photo
A WATERFORD man who tragically died following a horror fall at a ski resort is set to be laid to rest this week.
Aidan Bergin, based in Waterford, tragically passed away this week from serious injuries he sustained after plunging from a height of 1,900 feet while taking a picture of the scenery at a mountain ski resort in Bulgaria.
Ivailo Lefterov of the Bulgarian Red Cross Mountain Rescue Service told local news sites that the man fell down a gully on the side of Tordoka Peak.
An air ambulance was requested for rescue but it could not reach the Irishman and his recovery was part of an hour-long effort by the Mountain Rescue Service of the Bulgarian Red Cross.
The 29-year-old was rushed to a hospital in the nearby town of Razlog with “multiple traumas” following his recovery from the mountain.
It is understood that Aidan was part of a group taking pictures of the surrounding scenery when he lost his balance and fell.
The full assessment of his injuries was carried out at the hospital and treatment was provided, but he sadly passed away on Wednesday, January 29.
Aidan’s family have confirmed that he will be reposing at The Kiely Funeral Home, Dungarvan on Friday evening, February 7.
Aidan’s funeral mass will then take place on Saturday morning at 11am.
A heartbreaking notice described the young man as a “gentle soul” who is “deeply missed by Niall, his parents Joe and Máire, brothers Patrick and Eoghan, sister Niamh and her fiancé David, aunts, uncles, cousins and his many many friends both at home and abroad.”
They added: “Aidan, taken so suddenly from us, will live in our hearts for ever.”
Since the news of the tragic passing of Aidan, tributes have started to flood the condolences page, with one old classmate saying how he “will be always be remembered for his bright smile and caring nature”.
A mourner wrote: “Maire, Joe, Niall, Patrick, Niamh and Eoghan, there are no words to describe the heartbreak I am feeling for you all.
“Aidan was a kind, clever and fun soul even as a young child and it has always been evident that your family unit is full of love, strength and friendships.
“I hope this helps on the darkest of days. You are all in my thoughts and I will always remember Aidan with fond memories.”
A close friend added: “I am so desperately sorry to hear of Aidan’s far-too-untimely passing.. He was such a lovely person and I am glad to have known him..
“My deepest sympathies to Niall, and all the family. Ceol síorraí i measc na Naomh go raibh aige.”
Another friend said: “Sincerest condolences to the Bergin family as well as Niall and Aidan’s friends at this very difficult time.
“It was a privilege to have known him as he was one of the most friendly, kindhearted souls we have ever encountered.
“Praying for you all at this time. May Aidan’s gentle soul rest in peace.”

Three men found guilty over rape and sexual assault of woman they met in Dublin nightclub as sentencing date set
THREE men have been convicted of the rape and sexual assault of a woman they met in a Dublin nightclub almost six years ago.
The three men had pleaded not guilty to a total of seven counts of rape, oral rape and sexual assault of the woman at an unknown location in a car and in a Dublin house on August 31, 2019.
The jury of eight men and four women returned guilty verdicts today on six of the seven charges after a total of 13 hours of deliberation.
Anthony Hickey, 39, of Ballyogan Square, Carrickmines, Dublin 18, was convicted of rape, oral rape and sexual assault by a majority verdict.
Hickey had pleaded not guilty to one count of raping the woman in his then-home address in Ballyogan and not guilty to one count of oral rape and one count of sexually assaulting her in a car.
Fabio Vicente, 42, with an address at Little Newtown, Enniskerry, Co Wicklow, was convicted of two counts of rape by a majority verdict of the jury.
He had pleaded not guilty to one count of raping the woman in the car and one count of raping her in the house.
Matin Zolfaghari, 34, of Marley Court, Rathfarnham, Co Dublin, was convicted of oral rape by a majority verdict, and acquitted of sexual assault.
He had pleaded not guilty to orally raping the woman in the house and sexually assaulting her in the car.
The men made no visible reaction while the registrar read out the verdicts.
Mr Justice Paul Burns thanked jurors for their care and attention to this “particularly difficult case”.
COMPLAINANT IN COURT
The complainant was present in court when the verdicts were read out.
The judge said the men’s status had changed following their convictions. Remanding the three men in custody, he adjourned the case until March 10 for sentence and directed the preparation of a victim impact statement.
After the court rose, the three men appeared shocked, then hugged family members before they were taken into custody.
Donald Trump ‘given GOLDEN PAGER by Netanyahu’ in bizarre gift honouring Israel’s beeper bomb attack on Hezbollah
BENJAMIN Netanyahu gave Donald Trump a bizarre golden bleeper as he became the first foreign leader to visit the new President.
The Israeli Prime Minster handed over the gleaming gift – as well as a regular pager – in celebration of his deadly pager attack on Iran in September, Israeli media reported.
Netanyahu became the first world leader to visit Trump in Washington since he took office[/caption]Trump thanked Netanyahu for the unusual offering and congratulated him on the “grand” operation.
After the gift had changed hands the US President also set out a sweeping vision for transforming the Gaza strip into the “Riviera of the Middle East”.
He said America would take control of the area and that Palestinians would be resettled in neighbouring countries.
Israel booby-trapped Hezbollah’s supply of handheld pagers and walkie-talkies which exploded across Iran in September, killing dozens – including two young girls.
Thousands more were injured in the coordinated blasts including Hezbollah members, civilians and Iran’s ambassador to Lebanon.
Hezbollah said the devices had all belonged to its employees across “various units and institutions” – with Israeli intelligence agents later revealing how they managed it.
Israel and Hezbollah had been pelting each other with missiles over the Lebanese border daily since Hamas’s October 7 attack.
Hours before the pager explosion, Israel made it an official war aim to stop Hezbollah’s attacks on the north of the country so displaced residents could return home.
A second wave of explosions hit the following day, this time from rigged walkie-talkies.
In the days after the two attacks, the IDF launched a ground invasion into Lebanon.
Weeks later, Israel revealed it had been forced to launch the deadly attack early over fears the plot had been discovered by Hezbollah.
Israel had intended to blow up the pagers if all-out war ever broke out, but had to jump the gun when Hezbollah operatives began raising suspicions that could have foiled the plot.
Two former Israeli intelligence agents later told CBS News that Hezbollah had been duped into buying thousands of the rigged devices without realising they had been made in Israel.
Its members carried around the bombs for 10 years without ever suspecting the trap.
The agents revealed that a fake company manufactures the devices with explosives concealed in the batteries.
An agent identified as Michael said: “We have an incredible array of possibilities of creating foreign companies that have no way of being traced back to Israel.
“Shell companies over shell companies to affect the supply chain to our favour.”
“We create a pretend world. We are a global production company. We write the screenplay, we’re the directors, we’re the producers, we’re the main actors, and the world is our stage.”
Lebanon and international partners heavily criticised the attack.
Volker Turk, the UN’s human rights chief, said the attacks had “appalled” him.
He added that they “violate[d] international human rights law and, as applicable, international humanitarian law”.
Israel and Lebanon agreed to a ceasefire on November 26.
How did Israel pull-off the pager attack?
ISRAEL pulled-off an elaborate plan to plant booby-trapped electronic devices inside Iran, which could be detonated at will.
They did this by tricking Hezbollah into buying thousands of pagers and walkie-talkies that had in fact been made in Israel and tampered with.
Mossad, Israel’s intelligence agency, said it found out that Hezbollah was buying its pagers from a Taiwanese company called Gold Apollo.
The spies then set up a fake company to manufacture their own pagers rigged with explosives, complete with the Gold Apollo logo, without the real company realising.
An ex-Israeli agent called Gabriel said the agency duped Hezbollah into buying the pagers, making advertising films and brochures, and sharing them on the internet.
Mossad claimed it only installed enough explosives to hurt only the person carrying the device.
Gabriel told CBS: “We test everything triple, double, multiple times in order to make sure there is minimum damage.”
Mossad installed an urgent-sounding ringtone that would make Hezbollah operatives check their pagers.
Moments after the ringtone sounded, the explosives were detonated.
Gabriel said: “When they are buying from us, they have zero clue that they are buying from the Mossad,” he said. “We make like [movie] Truman Show, everything is controlled by us behind the scene.”
Hezbollah bought around 5,000 of the booby-trapped pagers by September 2024, according to CBS.
