Gary Neville tells Match of the Day legend ‘please stop putting me forward as Man Utd manager’

GARY NEVILLE has begged legendary football presenter Des Lynam to stop touting him for the Manchester United job.

The former Red Devils defender, 49, briefly went into management after hanging up his boots in 2011.

Neville played over 400 times for United, winning eight Premier League titles, two Champions Leagues, and three FA Cups.

The 49-year-old joined Valencia in 2015 for his first foray into management but endured a dismal time in LaLiga.

After winning just 10 games out of 28 at the Mestalla, Neville was sacked and has since carved out a career as a successful pundit.

Ex-Match of the Day host Lynam was recently asked who he thought should “save” United from current boss Ruben Amorim‘s reign.

Lynam indicated Neville would be the best man for the Old Trafford hot-seat as he understands and “loves the club.”

Neville responded on Saturday, telling Sky Sports: “Des Lynam was the doyen, the God of hosts and presenters in that era.

“Someone with an unbelievable voice, great delivery, great humour.

“I always got on with Des but if you could please stop putting me forward as the manager of Manchester United it would be quite helpful.

“I understand where you’re coming from – I do understand the club, I do love the club, I do believe I can communicate well.

“However, I don’t want to go back into coaching number one. And number two, I don’t believe that I’m the best man for the job by a long way.”

Neville also revealed his Sky Sports pundits had mocked him over Lynam’s claim.

He continued: “It gives my friends and colleagues, particularly Mr Jamie Carragher, the opportunity to giggle quite a bit on a Thursday afternoon when he sees the headline.

“I love Des to bits but I’m pretty sure he’s not right on that one.

“I feel bad to tell him he’s not right because he’s someone with such vast experience.”

Despite not sharing Lynam’s view on his coaching credentials, Neville did credit the 82-year-old with helping him into punditry.

Neville previously told The Overlap podcast: “I love Des Lynam. I met Des Lynam in 2002.

“My first ever punditry gig was 22 years ago. I broke my foot before the World Cup in Japan and South Korea and ITV asked me to be a pundit.

“I had the most incredible time, it was the moment that I recognised I wanted to go into punditry because of the people I was surrounded by.

“The fellow pundits on that panel were Bobby Robson, Terry Venables and Paul Gascoigne.

“I totally don’t belong in that panel from the point of view of football greatness and coaching.

“What I could give them was the current understanding of what was happening in that [England] dressing room.”

Since leaving the All Stars villa, Curtis Pritchard and Ekin‘s fellow Islander India Reynolds has been spilling the beans on the show.

Speaking exclusively to The Sun, the brunette beauty told us how the couple are really into each other.

She revealed she knew this because she had shared a bedroom with them.

India told us: “There was a lot of kissing coming from their corner of the room in bed, so I’m going to say it is legit from what I know.”

Speaking about why Ekin is so into Curtis, she added: “Oh my God, I think he is so nice.

“He is such a gentleman to absolutely everyone.

“I think he is such a kind, sweet guy, and I really feel like he’s just totally comfortable in himself and a really confident guy.”

Earlier this week, their steamy action between the sheets saw one Islander poke fun at them.

Luca Bish left fans in hysterics after shouting out a crude comment as Curtis snogged Ekin-Su in bed.

Leaving the pro-dancer laughing with embarrassment, Luca shouted: “Curtis has got a b**er!”

The islanders, who had all bedded down for the night, were left chuckling at the crude remark about Curtis’ erection.

Love Island fans also laughed at this naughty joke at home.

Sharing their amusement on X, formerly known as Twitter, one wrote: “Luca calling Curtis out on his b**er…! icl I’m liking Luca this time #loveisland.”

Another posted five ‘crying with laughter’ emojis, saying: “Curtis got a b**er.”

A third also shared a string of the same emojis, adding: “Curtis and Ekin snogging….Luca ‘Curtis has got a b**er’!”

Ekin was the first bombshell to enter the villa this year and took Curtis, Ronnie Vint and Scott Thomas on a group date.

The following day, she made the decision to steal Curtis from Kaz Crossley and they shared their first kiss shortly after.

Ekin is hoping that she has found love in the villa with Curtis after her very bitter split with Italian model Davide Sanclimenti in January 2024.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s son Darren launches furious rant at his own ’embarrassing’ players after career low

SIR ALEX FERGUSON’S son, Darren, launched a furious rant at his Peterborough flops after they were thrashed by Lincoln.

The Posh were torn apart on their visit to the LNER Stadium on Saturday as they went 3-0 down before they even mustered a response in a heavy 5-1 defeat.

Cian Hayes had a particularly bad day as Posh lost 5-1 to Lincoln[/caption]

It was the joint second-heaviest defeat of Ferguson’s managerial career, only eclipsed by 5-0 thrashing’s at the hands of Bolton in February 2023 and Oxford United in April 2024.

And it a result which compounds a shocking run of form that has left Peterborough 19th in the League One table.

They are without a win in eight league matches, with their last win coming in a 4-3 thriller against Crawley on December 14.

Speaking after the defeat, Ferguson – who is now in his fifth stint as Peterborough boss after taking charge in January 2023 – declared this was the “softest” group of players he has managed.

He said: “I’m embarrassed. It was an embarrassing performance. I’ve never seen that from a Peterborough United team at this level. It was embarrassing.

“The first goal was a free header. We just let them score and do what they wanted. It was a mess. A complete mess.

“If you don’t run, you don’t tackle, don’t have a real desire to turn up every game then that’s what happens.

“That’s the problem with this group. They haven’t got the desire. They have not got the desire as a group. It’s just basics. They don’t run, don’t tackle, don’t head. They don’t tackle properly.

“It was a shambles. I don’t often say that about my teams, but I’m sorry, I have to be honest. This group of players is without doubt the softest group of players I’ve ever had in my management career.”

Ferguson singled out Cian Hayes for criticism on the penalty which was given away to make it 3-1 after half-time, while Hayes later conceded an own goal to make it 4-1.

“We changed the shape at half-time and then give away a horrendous penalty – what is he doing?

“I don’t know. It’s my group of players and all the rest of it. But sometimes you think you’re wasting your time.”

Ferguson added that he felt sympathy for the 1,800 travelling fans, more than half of whom left the match early.

“It’s easily my worst defeat as a Peterborough manager. The manner of it. More than half the fans left before the end. That tells the story.

“We sold out, and they are wasting their time.”

Peterborough will be hoping they can have better luck when they host Wigan at Weston Homes Stadium on Tuesday.

Their horror run of form included a 2-0 loss to Everton in the FA Cup third round, where Ferguson said a Toffees star had a pop at him for denying a moment of history for Ashley and Tyler Young by not bringing on the youngster to share the pitch with his father.

‘Storm events had severe impact on water’ – Over 100k premises without water as Storm Herminia batters Ireland

NEARLY 109,000 homes, farms and businesses are still without water supplies after Storm Eowyn wrecked the country.

Uisce Eireann has issued an update for all householders as many crew teams are scrapping to repair the water supplies.

Thousands of homeowners, farmers and staff suffered a loss of supply due to power outages.

Approximately 109,000 people across the country have no water supplies due to the disruptive storm event, the spokesperson revealed today.

An additional 112,000 people are now being supplied by schemes where Uisce Eireann has deployed generators.

However, supplies for further 126,000 people at risk in areas where power is yet to be restored, dropped from 275,000 yesterday.

The most impacted areas are located along the West Coast and Midlands, including Galway, Mayo, Clare, Cavan, Monaghan, Westmeath, Donegal and Longford.

Kerry, Laois and Tipperary are no longer part of the most impacted areas for the lack of water supplies.

For those who are still suffering a water outage, they can view the updates on local supplies issues are being provided on the Uisce Eireann website and Water.ie.

The repair crews are back on the ground today as they work towards restoring the water supplies and operations at wastewater plants despite Storm Herminia battering the country.

And they are also actively sourcing and transferring generators to sites where power has not been restored yet.

Uisce Eireann is coordinating with the ESB to prioritise power restoration and liaising with other agencies, including the National Emergency Coordination Group (NECG) and local authorities.

It is currently unknown when the estimated time of complete restoration of water supplies across the country is as Storm Herminia’s arrival will delay it further due to fallen trees and debris.

‘UNPRECEDENTED STORM EVENT’

Uisce Eireann’s Head of Water Operations, Margaret Attridge, said that there has been positive progress made overnight on the repairs, but the number of people experiencing loss of supply due to power outages remains significant.

She said: “This unprecedented storm event (Storm Eowyn) has had a severe impact on our water and wastewater network nationwide.

“Our crews are on the ground in all impacted areas working to restore water services as quickly as possible, but given the extent of the damage to the power network, it may take some time before full service is restored everywhere.

“We apologise to customers who have been without water for a few days and ask for the public’s continued patience during this challenging time, some customers are also operating with restricted service as treated water storage reservoirs and networks recharge.

“In locations where water supplies have been impacted for longer periods, we are deploying alternative water supplies.

“Details of these supplies and their locations are being posted across our website and social media channels as they become available.”

CONSERVE WATER

Margaret also urged customers to conserve water where possible to protect supply while the outages are resolved.

People can take some simple steps to conserve their water, such as avoiding water-intensive appliances during this time.

To conserve water, people are urged to avoid using excess water at home by mending taps and running toilets.

Use a basin in your sink when rinsing food and use it for watering plants.

People are urged to take a shower instead of a bath to reduce water usage but they are warned that taking a shorter shower can save up to 10L of water a minute.

Consider only flushing the toilet when you really need to, if it’s yellow, let it mellow.

Lastly, turn off the tap when brushing your teeth or shaving.
