I came face-to-face with ISIS gunman and locked eyes with him as he opened fire – I’m still haunted by horrors I saw

Collage of a woman, photos of a couple, and a woman on a beach.

TREMBLING with terror, I cowered as gunshots rang out under our hotel window.

Then, just when I thought I couldn’t feel more afraid, I heard banging on our door. ‘Open up!’ a man shouted. ‘I have a key. I’m coming in!’

Knowing it was too dangerous to speak, my husband Baron and I exchanged glances.

My heart lurched as the door handle rattled – I knew I was maybe only moments from death, but I also knew I would not give in without a fight.

Five days earlier, in June 2015, Baron and I had checked in to our favourite hotel, The Imperial Marhaba.

We’d holidayed in Tunisia for the past 10 years and it was our fifth time staying here.

Moments from death

We’d noticed that it was much quieter than usual – many restaurants and shops were closed, and the beach was empty.

The hotel seemed quieter, too, with fewer staff and activities.

We didn’t think much of it at the time, but later the press speculated there had been prior warning of the attack that was not heeded.

On our fifth day, we were at the pool preparing to walk down to the beach bar for lunch, when we heard a loud popping sound coming from that direction.

I wasn’t worried, as it was a popular spot for weddings, so there were often fireworks.

But then we heard screaming and saw people running. ‘Run as fast as you can back to the room and don’t stop!’ Baron shouted.

I set off, but there was a wave of people dashing in different directions, screaming and yelling, and the gunshots were getting closer.

I stopped for a moment and, to my horror, spotted a man with a gun.

He looked directly at me. Somehow, adrenalin got me moving again and I stumbled towards the hotel doors.

Inside our room, Baron told me to hide in the bathroom, while he moved furniture to barricade us in.

Outside, we could hear gunshots, grenades and screaming. I thought of my parents and all my family back home. Would I ever see them again?

Then the banging on the door started. It was terrifying.

Was it the gunman? We had no way of knowing, but after what felt like an age, he moved on.

Over our balcony, we saw military boats arriving to help. But we also saw so many bodies and injured people being carried into the hotel.

It was devastating.

Three and a half hours after the attack began, we learned the gunman had been shot dead and the so-called Islamic State had claimed responsibility for the attack.

We were asked to gather in the hotel reception, and on the way down, we had to flatten ourselves against the wall and check every corner and stairway.

Along with crowds of petrified holidaymakers, we waited until around midnight to be taken to the airport.

On the flight, I began having panic attacks as I replayed in my mind what had happened.

Once home, I expected to feel relief, but I still didn’t feel safe – I couldn’t even go upstairs on my own.

I was haunted by the gunshots.

Baron took me to A&E and I was referred to the crisis team, who looked after me at home for 10 days, and we had interviews with counter-terrorism police, too.

Afterwards, I had to try to rebuild my life, but the trauma was debilitating.

I couldn’t bear to be in crowds, even with people I knew, and I couldn’t go shopping or to work.

I had nightmares and constant flashbacks to the attack.

And although I knew I was lucky to survive, I felt guilt, too, as I’d made it out alive, when so many had died (38 people died, including 30 Brits, and 39 were left wounded).

I had several years of counselling and was urged to put the attack behind me.

But how could I just forget about it?

It helped me accept the memories would always be with me, but I can spot the triggers and how to deal with them.

Last year, we finally booked another beach holiday – this time to Cyprus.

I was anxious, but I enjoyed the trip and I was so proud of myself.

It’s another hurdle I’ve overcome. In many ways, the attack has made me stronger and more compassionate, and it’s made me realise how precious life really is.

Leading car brand launches new SUV that looks just like a Land Rover but only costs £9,000

A LEADING car brand has launched a new SUV that looks just like a Land Rover and is easier on the wallet.

The Chinese car firm have obviously taken inspiration from one of the biggest SUV brands on the market but for a fraction of the price.

The Chinese model is eerily similar to a Land Rover[/caption]

Chery’s 2026 Tiggo 7 Sport and Tiggo 7 Plus have been unveiled with both designs looking almost identical to Range Rover’s hugely popular Evoque.

But it has one major advantage over its European competitors as its set to hit the roads for £9,000.

Pricing for the new Tiggo 7 Sports starts at 87,900 yuan in Asia, or around £9,100.

The higher end Tiggo 7 Plus is priced slightly higher at 91,900 yuan or £9,400.

Compare that to a brand new Evoque and you’re looking at an eye-watering £44,000 with costs even exceeding the £50,000 mark in some instances.

It’s still not as cheap if you purchase a second-hand Evoque which come in at around £20,000.

The new Tiggo is not yet sold in Europe and prices are likely to be higher when the model is eventually made available due to importing costs.

But British motorists will be happy to hear that, because of the lack of tariffs on brand-new Chinese cars, they will likely pay considerably less than their US or EU counterparts.

In Australia, the Tiggo 7 Super Hybrid has been made available with models hitting the market for $39,990.

That would equate to around £19,000 in the UK but this is still cheaper than many Western-build SUVs.

The Tiggo 7 is available in a range of fuel types including mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric options.

But those keen on getting their hands on one may have to wait a while as Chery intends to first expand to Eastern European markets.

Eastern European nations could see a launch in the second half of this year with an initial focus on midsize plug-in hybrid models.

The Tiggo 7 Sport comes with a 1.5 litre turbocharged engine variant delivering 115 kW with a six-speed dual clutch transmission.

The model also comes with a mesh grille, concealed door handles and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, buyers will find a 13.2 inch screen and a multifunction steering wheel.

Spend a bit more for a higher-spec model and you’ll see higher end features included such as a panoramic sunroof and ventilated front passenger seat.

Chery, the largest exporter of cars from China for the past 22 years, exported 1.14 million vehicles globally in 2024.

It was announced last year that Chery was set to launch five new models in the UK markets to rival Kia.

Chery decided to launch as a standalone brand despite a pre-existing partnership with British firm Jaguar Land Rover.

Former Premier League manager is told ‘f*** you’ by his own player before he shushes him in furious Club World Cup row

EX-PREM boss Bruno Lage has been embroiled in an astonishing touchline spat with his OWN player.

The Benfica boss watched his side see off Auckland City 6-0 in the Club World Cup on Friday night.

Benfica struggled to break down the Kiwi minnows, taking almost an hour to find the opener.

Lage decided to shuffle his pack in the Orlando heat, replacing Orkun Kokcu with ex-Swansea City midfielder Renato Sanches.

But Kokcu was furious at being subbed, refusing to shake Lage’s hand as he skulked from the field.

Portuguese outlet A Bola claims Kokcu turned and shouted “f*** you” at his manager before taking his place on the bench.

A furious Lage confronted Kokcu and was seen shushing him by placing a finger on his lips.

And after Sanches netted Benfica’s third, the boss headed back to the bench to carry on the feud.

Kerem Akturkoglu was seen holding Kokcu back, preventing the incident from escalating as Lage again shushed his own player.

Lage claimed after the match that Kokcu was guilty of only wanting to “win and score goals”.

He said: “We decided that Renato should come on.

“Regardless of the players’ form, I make the decisions.

“In the last game, we started with Renato, and Kokcu came on later and helped us.

“That’s how it was today, too. I saw the behaviour of a consistently professional athlete. That was a unique experience.

“He has always behaved very well both on and off the field. He has the desire to help the team.

“I make the decisions I have to make, no matter who it is. I’ve proven that many times.

“I look at the player’s current situation and make my decisions calmly.”

Lage, 49, took charge of Wolves in the Premier League between June 2021 and October 2022.

He won just 19 of 51 games at Molineux, but was hampered by an injury crisis to his strikers.

Julen Lopetegui replaced Lage in the Midlands, with the Portuguese taking charge of Botofago in Brazil before joining Benfica for a second stint last summer.

We bought an abandoned Italian mansion for half of the asking price, it looks like a palace but there’s a major downside

A COUPLE shared a glimpse into the abandoned Italian mansion they purchased for less than half the asking price.

And while the stunning property was definitely a steal, they revealed one major downside to their plans.

TikTok user Jordan Kamelleri (@jordankamelleri) and his partner Emmanuele are no strangers to rennovating old buildings and transforming them into high-end properties.

Their latest purchase is an “abandoned Italian palace” which hasn’t been inhabited in 40 years.

The couple have been documenting their rennovation work on the 14-bedroom space, amassing eight million views on one of their clips.

“When I was younger, I would have dreamed of a place like this,” Jordan told his followers, revealing that features such as the property’s armoury immediately sold him.

Now, the pair plan to convert the 16th-century Italian palace into a private residence, reports People.

They have been working to renovate various properties together since 2018, eventually leading them to their most restoration yet.

Their new estate was built sometime in the 1500s and has over 21,500 square feet of living space.

With years of experience navigating Italy’s real estate market, the couple were able to negotiate the purchase price down to roughly half the original listing.

They revealed that they ultimately paid the equivalent of £557,000 for the property, plus additional fees and taxes.

The pair are now focused on clearing out the vast spaces and salvaging what they can.

However, the long-abandoned property comes with one major drawback.

They revealed that they have had to deal with “decades of decay” in their efforts to do up the space.

But there are significantly more pros than cons with this property, as well as being a steal with magnificent views of the Italian countryside, it remarkably also has functional plumbing.

While the current plan is to convert the space into a private property, the couple are remaining flexible and allowing for the possibility of opening one wing to guests as a vacation rental.

They added that they are also considering opening parts of the palace for events such as weddings.

5 Tips to Get on The Property Ladder

Saving for your first property is tough, but it is possible. Here are a few steps for first-time buyers.

    1. Cut back on luxuries and start saving

Consistent monthly saving is the best way to accumulate enough money to get on the ladder, for a deposit and purchase fees. To do this, you need to take a look at your monthly outgoings and think about what can be cut out – holidays, new clothes, weekly takeaway.

Using a savings calculator can help you to establish how long you will need to save for a deposit. Based on your income, you can figure out a realistic amount to save each month.

    2. Have a realistic property search

Set a budget for the property price you would like to buy, and think realistically about the location and size of your property. While we all may want that house with a view or extra bedroom, can you afford it?

    3. Research Help To Buy and Shared Ownership schemes

The government has introduced a few ways to help first-time-buyers get on the property ladder and they’re great for those on lower incomes or to buy a property in more expensive areas like London.

    4. Consider buying with another person

Investing with somebody else you know is a sure way to get onto the property ladder. You only need to save half the amount you would otherwise, so you can work towards getting your property sooner.

You can invest with a friend, family or partner. Naturally, it is a big step and a huge commitment so be open and honest about what you expect from living together — if you haven’t already.

    5. Talk to a mortgage broker and get your documents in order

A mortgage broker can tell you exactly how much you can borrow for a mortgage, what you will need to pay monthly and in upfront costs.

The vast property has an array of indoor-outdoor spaces, a favourite feature for the couple.

These include several verandas, loggias, and panoramic atriums offering exposure to the Italian sun throughout the day.

TikTok users shared their thoughts on the stunning property in the comments section.

“This has SO MUCH potential as not only a home but also a wedding venue,” wrote one viewer.

“I’ve never been so jealous in my entire life,” said another impressed follower.

“People are really out there living my dream,” commented a third person.
