Inside Rory McIlroy’s Travelers Championship prize money as he bags HUGE six-figure sum after surging to sixth place

RORY McIlroy went home from the Travelers Championship €604,000 richer after surging up to sixth place on Sunday.

The five-time major winner had looked adrift of contending at the outset of the final day’s play in Connecticut, USA.

However, he wound up finishing just three shots behind winner Keegan Bradley who took advantage of a Sunday slip from Tommy Fleetwood.

McIlroy was NINE shots off the top of the leaderboard as he teed off on the opening hole.

But in an encouraging display, he posted a five-under par round of 65 to leave himself in a tie for sixth with world number one Scottie Scheffler.

Shane Lowry meanwhile, placed in a tie for 45th on a total score of one-under par across the four days. For his efforts he’ll earn around €55,000.

Fleetwood had gone into the day with a three-shot lead to himself but a bogey-ridden start and end to his round allowed home favourite Bradley to swoop in and take the title.

The Englishman ended up missing out by a shot after bogeying the 18th to hand victory to the US Ryder Cup captain.

Fleetwood had a six-foot putt to win but his shot appeared to hit a ball mark and drifted inches wide.

He then agonisingly watched on as Bradley sank his putt from a similar distance to birdie, achieving a two-shot swing on the final hole to win the championship.

One fan reacted saying: “That’s just unbelievably bad luck.”

Another added: “1.9M ball mark. Ouch.” And a third wrote: “Really sad to see for the guy.”

The result means Fleetwood’s wait for a PGA Tour win continues. He also missed out on the €2.7million winning prize pot.

Fleetwood shared his disappointment after the final round, saying: “I’m gutted right now.

“I’ve not been in that situation for a long time. It’s probably the worst way to finish.

“Leading by two with three to play. Leading by one going into the last and you don’t even make it to a play-off. It’s the worst way it could go.”

But he is feeling positive after a meeting with his surgeon, who is optimistic after performing an operation on Ross.

The former WWE commentator revealed he was “scared to death” after his diagnosis – but is now feeling blessed thanks to a successful surgery.

Ross, 73, said on the Grilling J.R. Podcast: “I had a meeting with my surgeon earlier this week.

“He’s very happy, which makes me very happy. So, I’m sore from the surgery. My abdomen is real sore, but I’ve endured worse, and so I’m feeling pretty good actually.

“Progress is good. I believe they got all the cancer, which is great. So, I’m very blessed in that regard. I was scared to death for a while.

“I have to be honest with you. It’s that mysterious thing that you don’t know how — did they get everything they needed to get? Are we okay?

“But I have a real good surgeon. He’s taken care of me… I’m very blessed in that regard.”

Ross already has his sights set on returning to the commentary booth for AEW Wrestling.

He continued: “I hope to make it to Texas. My plan is to be there. So, we’ll have to kind of wait and see.

“I’d love to show up and do a match or two. That’d be cool. So, we’ll see.

“I don’t wanna get too ambitious but, my plan is to be there and to participate. I wanna play. I want to get back in the game somehow, some way and contribute to the success of AEW.”

Shock as strict curfews turn top Turkish seaside resort into ghost town after midnight

A POPULAR tourist destination’s night-time curfew means clubs are forced to close by midnight – and tourists have said it has killed off the night scene.

Marmaris in Turkey has been cracking down on its nightlife with early closures and a ban on late night music being played.

The rules mean that loud music cannot be played past midnight[/caption]

The crackdown is in response to concerns about harassment and inappropriate behaviour in some of the venues in the area.

The decision is also to respect residents in the region.

Whilst the curfew and stronger reinforcement of it have come into force more recently, the stopping of music at midnight has been in place for some time.

And venues are expected to close by 1am, with drinkers told to leave by 12:30am.

However, if these rules are broken, officials can close venues.

With the recent changes, some Brits have taken to social media to document and talk about the change in atmosphere in Marmaris.

A recent TikTok video shows that some of the bars have been closed, with tape across the front stopping tourists from entering.

The bars’ corresponding beach sections have also been closed off – causing the beachfront to be empty of tourists.

In another video, a user shared how the rules mean no dancing on tables, no tops off, no sparklers and no dancing on chairs.

They added: “Tourism is finished.”

On one of the videos, a user commented: “Marmaris is finished as a holiday resort, was there in May – empty and very expensive.”

Another said: “I used to love Marmaris but it’s become boring and even the hotel bars shut at like 12:30am which is dull.

“I won’t go anymore now as it’s become crazy expensive.”

A third agreed: “We don’t go on holiday for nightlife so doesn’t bother us but was sad to see places so empty.”

However, some holidaymakers have had different experiences, with some saying they haven’t noticed an impact.

One visitor commented: “Just got back today and had a great time.”

Another said: “Now I would be more likely to go.”

A third wrote: “Here now, still been a fantastic as ever great atmosphere great memories no complaints here.”

Whilst some of the rules have been around for a while, it appears officials are enforcing the rules more so than usual.

As a result, in areas along the promenade, the party destination appears more tame than before.

Over in Spain, a tourist hotspot also plans ‘to ban 24-hour bars’ as it brings in strict curfew.

Plus, there has been a boost to Brits planning summer staycations as new rules mean hotels and restaurants will be much cheaper.

British Airways scraps free bottles of water for economy passengers in new eco trial

BRITISH AIRWAYS has conducted a trial of its in-flight drinks service – and it’s bad news if you like your free bottles of water.

The trial that took place last week affected certain passengers travelling from London Heathrow to Miami, Boston and Los Angeles who were not provided with plastic water bottles during their flight.

The trial lasted just one week[/caption]

Thirsty passengers wanting to hydrate were provided with water in paper cups instead.

The change was for those on long-haul flights heading to the three US cities who were sitting in economy and premium economy.

It did not affect flyers in BA’s Club World or First Class.

British Airways confirmed the one-week trial was reduce single-use plastic onboard, and it took place from June 16 to June 22.

A spokesperson for British Airways told The Independent: “This is a one-week trial on three routes as part of efforts to reduce plastic waste.

The views of our customers are very important to us, and we’ll be listening very carefully to their feedback.”

On FlyerTalk, passengers took to the forum to express how they felt about the changes.

One wrote: “I read about this trial, seems ridiculous I know but BA are looking for ways to save plastic, I can’t see it being accepted.”

Another however added that it was a “good idea” to get rid of plastic bottles with someone else adding they had never used one on a flight.

Last year, British Airways scrapped three-course meals in its business cabin on late take-offs.

Starters have gone and the choice of main courses and desserts has been reduced.

Two of the four mains on a Club World menu after 9pm are cheese and crackers, and soup. One of the puddings on offer is chocolate chip cookies.

British Airways sources said passengers receive the same premium food and drink offering on board.

It was said that the menu changes on flights leaving after 9pm was aimed at helping passengers who were keen to get to sleep.

About the changes to the in-flight service, a spokesperson for British Airways told The Sun: “We’re incredibly proud of our premium dining experience, which includes a wide range of meal options to suit the preferences of our customers depending on the time of day they’re travelling.

“We trialled our new brunch offering with thousands of customers across numerous routes and received extremely positive feedback on both the quality and variety of options offered.”

British Airways recently made a big change to its Executive Club – but here’s how you can still fly like a gold member.

And one holidaymaker discovered how to buy a British Airways flight for just £1.

Plus, the six times you should never recline your plane seat, according to ex-BA flight attendant.

English train station to shut for 2 years ahead of major £11.5million revamp to make a ‘railway that’s fit for future’

A RAILWAY station is set to close for two years ahead of major £11.5m improvement works.

It comes amid major investment in stations and trains across the country with services affected across the UK.

The Sun - Picture of the view at Deighton Station near to Glenfield Avenue. Glenfield Avenue in Huddersfield where residents are demanding £10,000 compensation from Network Rail for losing the use of their gardens during a two-year track upgrade scheme. The homes have been ordered to allow workers access to their back gardens overlooking the main Transpennine railway line.
Deighton Station in Huddersfield is currently being upgraded as part of a programme of railway improvements in the UK

Deighton Station in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, will shut on August 30 and reopen in 2027.

The work is part of the multi-billion-pound Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) programme of railway improvements being carried out by Network Rail.

This includes the closure of Ty Glas station in Cardiff until spring 2026, part of the Welsh Government’s £800 million investment in new trains.

TRU sponsor Gareth Hope said the upgrade of Deighton Station “will allow the station to be brought up to modern standards and accommodate better rail travel across the North”.

The rebuilt station will boast two new tracks to allow faster services to overtake slower ones.

It will also extend platforms to accommodate longer trains with more seats.

There will also be a new footbridge with lifts for step-free access to both platforms.

A new forecourt, including a drop-off point, accessible parking and improved waiting shelters, will also be built.

‘Fit for the future’

An hourly rail replacement bus service will operate between Huddersfield and Deighton while the station is closed.

The service will stop at Brighouse from September 29 2025.

As part of the work, Whitacre Street – which is already closed to vehicles – will be closed to pedestrians from August 20 until July 2026.

Rob Warnes, strategic development director for Northern, said the work would support its aim of an “inclusive, accessible railway that’s fit for the future”.

He added: “We recognise that delivery of works on this scale can cause disruption to the lives of our customers, and we are grateful for their continued patience.”

In Cardiff, improvements at Ty Glas will include five new, quieter Class 756 tri-mode trains rolled out on the Croyton and Caerphilly to Penarth lines.

There will also be a new level crossing at the station.

Station to station – exclusive railway tours

Celebrate 200 years of British railway with these tours...

As part of Railway 200, a year-long celebration marking two centuries of train travel in the UK, Network Rail is running exclusive tours of London Waterloo, London Victoria and London Bridge stations.

Railway historian Rachel Kolsky will lead small groups of around 15 people on two-hour tours, offering glimpses into hidden areas of each station.

Tours of London Waterloo, the UK’s third busiest train station, will explore seven areas, including the London Necropolis Railway.

Brits can also book tours of London Victoria, where they’ll learn more about the station’s glamorous past thanks to its ties to the well-known Orient Express.

Tours of London Bridge will also be taking place to mark 200 years of train travel in the UK. The tours last two hours and cost £25 per person, with just 15 people on each tour.

Tickets are available through Eventbrite.

During the works, passengers will be directed to nearby Birchgrove station where they can seek alternative routes.

Those needing to cross the railway will be diverted towards the Caerphilly Road bridge.

Hugo Ekitike is Thierry Henry-like Arsenal and Man Utd transfer target with symmetrical name who could surpass Gyokeres

HE’S the man with the symmetrical name hoping to become a household name in the English game.

Hugo Ekitike is the hot topic of conversation on Premier League lips right now.

He won Ligue 1 in his time with PSG playing alongside Neymar, Mbappe and Messi[/caption]

And the French striker has shown there is far more to him than a surname that reads the same back to front.

Following a sensational breakthrough season with Eintracht Frankfurt, Ekitike is rated at £85million and linked with Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea.

With No 9s in short supply, the 23-year-old has emerged as a genuine alternative to the likes of Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres.

Not that he is any stranger to these shores having TWICE turned down moves to Newcastle – first in January 2022 and again seven months later.

Ekitike opted for Paris Saint-Germain instead, stating at the time: “I’m not setting aside everything Newcastle did for me.

“If I had to go abroad, I would have gone there. But when PSG wants you and you’re French, you can’t refuse.”

As it turned out, Ekitike ran into a Galactico roadblock in the form of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, while the Toon signed Alexander Isak instead.

But now he is available again, we’ve run the rule over the wiry hotshot Messi dubbed  ‘The Iron Rod’.

BEST ONLINE CASINOS – TOP SITES IN THE UK

SO IS HE ANY GOOD?

Well, the simple answer is yes. Last season he scored 15 goals and produced eight assists in the Bundesliga, playing 33 of the 34 matches.

Throw in another seven goals and four assists in cup competitions, including the Europa League, and you can see why the Premier League’s vultures are circling.

What really impressed the Frankfurt fans was how he adapted to the loss of Omar Marmoush in January.

Up until then, the pair had been blazing away as a two-man frontline.

But once Marmoush left for Manchester City, Eintracht boss Dino Toppmoller completely changed tack and played one up front with Ekitike leading the line.

Far from derailing the youngster, he thrived on the lone role, scoring three times in the first two games following Marmoush’s exit and maintaining his numbers until the end of the season.

WHAT ARE HIS STRENGTHS?

Dribbling is probably his main asset. Ekitike has quick feet and an ability to dance past defenders through seemingly impossible gaps with the ball glued to his boots.

Right footed, he is technically gifted and has explosive pace. At 6ft 3in, he looks gangly but is in fact deceptively balanced.

He also offers versatility. Ekitike can play as a No 9, a second striker, or as a winger.

He loves to drop deep to link play and is excellent at running the channels or cutting in from the left flank and shooting.

That has prompted comparisons with Thierry Henry, although a fairer likeness would be Isak.

Ekitike is also very good at pressing and winning the ball back high up the pitch.

He’s been described by some as a dribbling machine[/caption]

AFP
He’s scored 15 goals in 33 appearances for his German club[/caption]

AND HIS WEAKNESSES?

He is still very raw and, despite his success last season, there are improvements to be made.

Ekitike can be guilty of a lack of composure in the final third. Last season, he had more shots than anyone in the Bundesliga (117) but managed only a 13 per cent conversion rate.

Compare that to the 23 per cent that Harry Kane achieved from his 114 shots and you would be forgiven for painting a picture of wastefulness.

However, it has as much to do with decision-making as it does accuracy.

Ekitike likes to have a pop from range with 24 per cent of his efforts coming from outside the box, with less chance of beating the keeper.

He is stronger than he looks but, even so, there are occasions where he is knocked off the ball too easily.

And don’t be in a rush to hand him penalty duties. He missed two in the space of a month for Eintracht last season.

He’s on the radar of a lot of Premier League club
Rex

CAN HE HACK IT IN THE PREM?

Often players coming from the Bundesliga struggle at first with the superior physicality of the Premier League. Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and Leon Bailey are examples of that.

Marmoush has bucked that trend and it would be astonishing if a player as talented as Florian Wirtz doesn’t hit the ground running.

As for Ekitike, he will probably need a bit of patience. Prior to last season, he had only reached double figures for goals once before when he scored 10 for his hometown club Stade de Reims in 2021-22.

And his time at PSG yielded just three strikes in 33 appearances, 19 of which were off the bench.

That said, he has shown he is capable of troubling top opposition, netting against Bayern Munich, Dortmund, Leverkusen and Leipzig last season.

He left Pedro Porro in his wake on his way to scoring a 20-yarder against Tottenham in April’s Europa League quarter-final.

And a month before that, he put three past an England Under-21 defence that included Rico Lewis and Taylor Harwood-Bellis.

IS HE WORTH THE MONEY?

At £85m, it is a sizeable gamble and Prem clubs should be wary of the Frankfurt curse.

The Eagles have a knack of selling strikers at a massive profit, only for them to struggle at their next club.

Luka Jovic (£52m), Sebastien Haller (£42m), Randal Kolo Muani (£77m) and Andre Silva (£20m) definitely fall into the category of transfers where you wished you had kept the receipt.

Marmoush’s success at City has broken the hoodoo and there is no doubt Ekitike has a higher ceiling than 27-year-old Gyokeres.

If clubs can knock the asking price down to the £70m that Sesko is commanding, then Ekitike is maybe the better bet.

From Trump’s feint to decoy bombers…Web of deception that kept Midnight Hammer blitz secret so Iran didn’t fire ONE shot

DECOY and deception and were at the heart of the US’s Operation Midnight Hammer against Iran’s nuclear sites.

Through meticulous planning and artful bluff, the stealth bomber squadron glided in and out of Iran without ever being detected or fired upon.

The US began spinning a web of deception at the start of the conflict – and it culminated in the “obliteration” of three of Iran’s nuke plants, including the mountain fortress Fordow.

Trump’s public statements were curated to keep the regime and the rest of the world guessing about whether the US would collaborate in strikes.

On Wednesday, the President maintained the smoke-and-mirrors, telling reporters at a flagpole opening ceremony: “I may do it, I may not do it. Nobody knows what I’m gonna do.”

The masterstroke came on Thursday when the White House tossed out a “two-week” deadline for Trump to make his decision, supposedly to give Iran another chance to return to negotiations.

This was widely interpreted as kicking the can down the road – and Trump has been known to announce a two-week deadline for events that never materialise.

We now know that, as this was announced, Operation Midnight Hammer was in fact in its final planning stages.

Israel stuck to the script, evening  feigning frustration and vowing to strike Fordow without the US support they must have known was coming.

Government sources leaked to The Times of Israel that Netanyahu’s administration had a “tense” call with the White House expressing their concerns.

This too appears to have been a ruse to lull Iran into a false sense of security.

As the operation kicked off at midnight on Friday night, the misdirection continued.

A decoy fleet of B-2s flew west over over the Pacific and towards Guam.

Their only purpose was to throw intelligence off the scent of the actual operative fleet – which at the same moment was gliding quietly east, bound for Iran.

Only “an extremely small number of planners and key leaders” knew the truth, General Caine said.

The strike group consisted of seven B-2 bombers each loaded with two of the 14-ton “bunker-buster” bombs.

The round trip was 37 hours, so an armada of more than 100 support aircraft was needed to help them refuel on the wing.

Strict instructions were issued to keep communications to a minimum to avoid detection.

Then at half past midnight Iranian time, a US submarine launched more than two dozen Tomahawk land attack cruise missiles at the Isfahan nuclear site in east Iran.

An hour later, the bomber squadron entered Iranian airspace – still undetected, but in perilous enemy territory.

More decoy and scout planes swooped out ahead of the main unit to distract any awaiting Iranian defence jets – but they encountered none.

The escort group stood ready to launch preemptive fire on any surface-to-air missiles or jets, but not a single shot was fired at the operatives.

The first bombs dropped at 2:10am Iranian time – the darkest hour of the night – and 25 minutes later it was all over.

Officials revealed that around 75 precision-guided weapons were unleashed in total, with 14 of the “bunker-busters” dropped on Fordow.

The B-2s were programmed to drop one bomb first, followed by another shortly afterwards onto the exact same impact site. point of impact.

Emmerdale legend SACKED as rival blackmails boss into driving him out of the village

AN Emmerdale legend is brutally sacked next week – after a scheming rival blackmails their boss into forcing them out of the village.

The shock twist leaves residents reeling as the long-time character is shown the door in a savage power move that could change everything.

John wants Robert gone[/caption]

Robert warns Vic to stay away from John[/caption]

Dodgy John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) has finally shown his true colours in Emmerdale – by plotting to get rid of his own brother Robert (Ryan Hawley) just days after his shock return.

Robert rocked up in the village after being released from prison, determined to reconnect with his family – but not everyone gave him a warm welcome.

And it didn’t take long for tensions to explode, with John secretly threatening his brother before his release… and now dragging Caleb (William Ash) into a sneaky revenge plan.

But things quickly turned sour as Robert tried to warn sister Vic (Isabel Hodgins) to steer clear of John – only for her to brush it off, accusing him of being jealous.

Despite the drama, Robert tried to keep his head down and even landed a trial shift at Caleb’s depot – much to the fury of John and Aaron (Danny Miller), who clearly didn’t want him back.

In tonight’s (Monday) episode, Robert rocked up late for his first day but managed to impress Caleb by name-dropping a few handy business contacts – proving he still knows how to hustle in the Dales.

During his lunch break, Robert was none the wiser as Caleb opened the door to a furious John, who stormed in still raging about his brother’s return.

Fuming that Robert had been given a shot at the depot, John told Caleb he refused to work alongside him – but when pushed for a proper reason, he had nothing to offer.

Instead, John played dirty – and pulled out the big guns.

Reminding Caleb that he helped cover up the murder of Anthony Fox earlier this year, John coldly said he owed him… and it was time to cash in.

To Caleb, it was a dirty move – but to viewers, it was classic John.

With no other option, Caleb backed down and spun a lie that brought Robert’s trial to an abrupt end.

But Robert wasn’t fooled.

After a sly remark from Jai Sharma (Chris Bisson), he clocked that Caleb had been forced to dump him – and he knew exactly who was behind it.

Most devastating soap deaths

Here is a list of the most devastating deaths that have taken place in soapland over the years.

EASTENDERS

Barry Evans – Evil Janine (Charlie Brooks) lured her trusting fiance to Scotland for a quickie marriage after learning he was dying.

Her plan to inherit Barry’s fortune was thwarted when Barry told her that the doctors had mixed up his medical files.

Furious that she was no longer set for a windfall, she pushed Barry off a cliff after telling him their love was “fake”.

Bradley Branning – Bradley was accused of killing Stacey Slater’s rapist Archie Mitchell (Larry Lamb) after he punched him twice on the night he died.

Tina lost her footing and fell off a balcony – then warned Rob she was going to tell the cops he pushed her.

In a panic, Rob brutally clobbered her over the head with a metal pipe.

Molly Dobbs – Molly was one of the victims in Corrie’s 2010 tram crash, alongside Ashley Peacock (Steven Arnold).

Married to Tyrone (Alan Halsall), Molly had been having an affair with Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell) in the months before her death.

As fate would have it, Kevin’s wife Sally (Sally Dynevor) was by Molly’s side in her final moments.

Sally was stunned as Molly confessed Kevin was Jack’s father, before dying of her injuries.

Vera Duckworth – Having appeared regularly in Corrie since the 1970s, there was no denying Vera Duckworth was an iconic character.

Alongside her husband Jack, the pair formed one of the soap’s most beloved couples.

Muireann told how the buying process in Australia is much easier

The search for her forever home wasn’t easy and Muireann has even recalled people crying at viewings.

After blood, sweat and tears, the popular presenter finally went sale agreed and became a home owner earlier this month.

But, even after securing her first-ever property, the 41-year-old has told how “hopeless” the buying process feels.

Speaking on Louise Cooney’s podcast, Open Book, Muireann said: “It just feels more than dysfunctional, it feels very hopeless for an awful lot of people.”

She admitted: “But it’s just that the process is the wild, wild west.”

The TV star explained how her close pals who live in Australia can’t comprehend the struggle of buying a home.

Muireann explained: “They’re like, ‘The house just goes up, this is the price of the house, someone bids and there you go, you get yourself a house.

“It’s done in like 10 days.”

The breakfast show host highlighted how a lack of “supply” is the main problem with the Irish housing market.

But, noted that length of the buying process is also a tough factor.

The Virgin Media star even reminisced on her own experience with viewing homes.

She said: “One woman was pregnant and she also had a child with her. The house was already 140,000 over the asking price and she just wept, it was crazy.”

Beside the struggle of buying a home, Muireann has also had a tough time with renovating her new pad.

Whilst the new home is being renovated Muireann and her partner will remain in their Dublin city home which they have lived in since 2017.

HOUSE THAT?

Taking to Instagram, the star expressed her immense struggle with packing up all her belongings for the new property.

The Limerick lady said: “Probably the most viscerally horrible thing to ever happen to me was getting the coil. Awful, I hated it, it should be given under general anastethic.

“But, would I chose to have that procedure done everyday rather than clearing out my house and packing up, yes.”

The Irish host highlighted how she had been living in her current home since 2017, but had found items that belonged to her in 2003.

She cried: “I didn’t even live in Dublin in 2003, how did you get in to this house? Why are you here? Do you spark joy in my life? No!”

Muireann shook her head ashamedly and added: “Look I know I am an over consumer, it is a reckoning and I’m having a bit of an existential crisis about that right now.”
