Bohemians beat Shamrock Rovers for the THIRD time as Dayle Rooney and James Clarke goals adds huge twist to title race

TAKE it as red – and black – the League of Ireland title race is not over because of Bohemians.

The third Dublin derby of the season between Bohs and league leaders Shamrock Rovers went, for the third time, in the Gypsies favour as they deservedly took all three points.

It is their third win over Shamrock Rovers this season

Having won 1-0 at the Aviva, and an amazing come from behind win in Tallaght last time out, this one was as easy as a 2-0 win can be, as Dayle Rooney and James Clarke scored.

And without Bohs routinely beating the Hoops, the title race would already be as good as over.

Rovers now lead Drogheda United by eight points, but Bohemians are just a point off that and have two games in hand, and another Dublin Derby in September.

The Gypsies are still playing catch-up after their own poor start to the season.

But whatever it is, Bohs are Rovers’ kryptonite in a season when the Hoops have lost just one other game.

Monday night saw the home side start fast and never look back with their free form attack with no recognised striker tore the Hoops to shreds early on.

They were in front after just two minutes.

Jordan Flores clipped the ball forward from midfield where it looked as if Rovers’ Roberto Lopes was in control but he seemed to misjudge where the ball was going.

And as he tried to readjust, Clarke raced beyond him and was able to flick the ball away from Lee Grace in-field.

And there was Rooney standing near the penalty spot who was never going to pass up such a gilt-edged opportunity.

Bohs were flying, the home fans in the Jodi Stand were in full voice, and the Hoops’ were struggling and complaining to referee Kevin O’Sullivan.

Ross Tierney not retreating 10 yards seemed to be an issue but Rovers’ bigger problems was Bohs being in their faces in open play and causing problems.

John Mountney fizzed a shot over the bar from distance after a brilliant flowing move from one box to the other involving Tierney, Dawson Devoy, Rooney and Clarke.

And it was goal scorer Rooney that was central to so much whether holding the ball up and laying it off, for dribbling beyond players on the right flank.

So it was no surprise when he was central to Bohs second goal five minutes before half-time.

He was involved in a throw-in and dribbed in-field before then back heeling the ball to Tierney as he raced into the penalty area from the right.

The midfielder still had work to do but stayed cool and then fired a low cross into the six-yard box as Clarke arrived late to scramble over the line.

After such a high tempo first half, it was perhaps no surprise that Rovers – who made three quick subs after half time – had more of the game in the second half.

But chances were few and far between with Michael Noonan almost getting on the end of a Jack Byrne cross hearly in the half and Dylan Watts forcing Chorazka into a save.

And Bohs still carried a threat too with Lopes clearing off the line from Devoy after good work by Clarke on 73 minutes.

They had a further chance late on when Flores free kick was saved by Ed McGinty while Rovers’ kept pushing until the final moments.

But they never looked like getting the goal to make it nervous, as Bohs fans sang ‘It’s happened again’.

Love Island’s Megan stuns villa hunk as she proposes saucy throuple relationship after dramatic recoupling

LOVE Island’s Megan left a villa hunk blushing tonight after suggesting they form a saucy throuple relationship.

The episode began with a dramatic recoupling that saw the power firmly in the girls’ hands.

Tommy is getting to know Emily[/caption]

They each got to select the man they wanted to partner with, and Megan decided to remain with Tommy.

It followed rugby lad Conor making an effort in recent days to pursue her, despite having a close relationship with existing partner Emily.

He found himself picked last tonight by Welsh beauty Emily, who gave him a glowing assessment even though they’ve had a rocky few days.

But it quickly became clear that Conor now only sees it as a friendship couple and remains determined to win Megan, later telling her that he’d pick her if another recoupling took place.

The Irish lass said the situation was difficult and she still wanted to share a bed with Tommy but jokingly asked: “Can we be in throuple?”

At the weekend, Megan and Tommy’s seemingly solid relationship was tested properly for the first time this series in a game of spin the bottle.

Conor acted out his favourite sex position with the girl he thought was best in bed, choosing Megan.

It raised eyebrows from Emily, who said if he keeps going on the way he is he’ll never find out about her bedroom skills.

She then licked Ben from head to toe in a saucy dare, with an irked Conor simply saying she only chose Ben because he’d chosen Megan previously.

All the while, Tommy was sat stewing after learning Megan said she had “unfinished business” with Conor.

Two men sentenced to life for ‘unimaginable’ murder of young footballer, 22, over €6,000 worth of cannabis

TWO drug dealers have been sentenced to life in prison at the Central Criminal Court for murdering a promising young footballer who had stolen €6,000 worth of cannabis.

Muna Ali, the mother of the deceased man Mahamud Ilyas, 22, wrote a statement that was read out at today’s sentencing hearing for her son’s murderers, Viorel Doroscan, 23, and Otniel Richardo Clejan, 24.

She described Mahamud as a good son and a lovely young man who had “high hopes for a career in football”.

She added: “Everybody in the family loved him and he had a lot of good friends. He was a good brother, especially to his sisters, and was like a father figure when his father was not in Ireland.”

The trial heard that Doroscan and Clejan beat Mr Ilyas by stamping on him, kicking him, and striking his head with a hammer at an apartment in Blanchardstown in Dublin.

They tied his hands and feet, wrapped him in a duvet and travelled to a wooded area at Belgree Lane in Co Meath, where they left their victim to die from his injuries.

Ms Ali said reliving the nightmare of her son’s death has left her devastated.

She said: “He was left in the middle of nowhere with no respect. The way he died was so painful and I feel helpless that I could not help him… They took his future, he was so young and full of life. My son was everything to me.”

Handing down the mandatory sentence for murder, Mr Justice Tony Hunt said Doroscan and Clejan had suffered a “massive loss of control and reason” when they assaulted Mr Ilyas.

However, a distressing aspect of the crime, he said, was the “disrespectful and callous way in which the seriously injured Mr Ilyas was dealt with.”

By the time they had driven to Belgree Lane, Mr Justice Hunt said their “passions should have cooled”.

Nevertheless, they “parcelled Mr Ilyas up” and left him.

Whatever chance he had of surviving the assault was “snuffed out by their callous actions”, the judge said.

Extending his sympathy to the family, he added: “The loss is unimaginable for those who have not had the misfortune to find themselves in that situation.”

Doroscan, of Bay Meadows Square, Hollystown, West Dublin, and Clejan, with a former address at Verdemont, Blanchardstown, Dublin pleaded not guilty to the murder of Mr Ilyas on December 9, 2022.

A jury convicted them of murder by unanimous verdict earlier this year.

Gardai discovered Mr Ilyas’s body at Belgree Lane the day after the murder following a tip-off from a member of the public.

GUILTY COUNTS

Detective Garda Sean O’Farrell today told the court that Clejan had no relevant previous convictions while Doroscan had two for possession of drugs and one for possession of drugs for sale or supply.

Robert Burns, 59, who lived at the apartment in Verdemont where the assault took place, previously pleaded guilty to impeding the arrest or prosecution of Doroscan and Clejan by cleaning Mr Ilyas’s blood from the carpet and walls.

Another co-accused, Lorenzo Cantaragiu, 22, of Castlegrange Park, Blanchardstown, was found guilty by a jury of four counts of impeding the apprehension or prosecution of Doroscan and Clejan.

Cantaragiu drove the two killers to Belgree Lane with Ilyas in the back and later cleaned blood from the back seat before selling the car.

Lawyers for Cantaragiu and Burns will make submissions to the court on July 4 before Mr Justice Hunt sentences them.

Det Gda O’Farrell told prosecution counsel Eoin Lawlor SC, with Jane Murphy BL, that Clejan and Doroscan were using Burns’s home to store drugs.

On December 8, 2022 Mr Ilyas entered Mr Burns’s home and stole a bag of drugs, which Burns estimated was worth €6,000.

Mr Ilyas spoke to Doroscan on the phone that night and offered to sell some of the drugs back to him for €500.

They arranged to meet the following afternoon.

GRUESOME ASSAULT

When Ilyas went to Verdemont, Clejan and Doroscan got him on the floor where they demanded he tell them where he had put the drugs, beat him with hammers and used their feet to stamp and kick him in the torso and head.

Doroscan recorded part of the assault on Snapchat

Both Clejan and Doroscan claimed they acted in self-defence after Mr Ilyas attacked them with a crowbar.

Doroscan claimed that Mr Ilyas was alive and screaming abuse when they left him at Belgree Lane.

State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster said the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head using a blunt object such as a hammer, blows, and kicks.

She said death could have occurred anywhere between 30 minutes and up to five hours after the attack but that the deceased would have become unconscious very quickly.

Watch dramatic moment angry brawl breaks out during League of Ireland clash as TWO players sent off

TEMPERS boiled over during the League of Ireland clash between Galway Utd and Sligo Rovers when a melee led to TWO players being sent off.

The two sides were level at 1-1 when Galway’s Moses Dyer and Sligo’s John Mahon came together.

Moses Dyer and John Mahon were involved in a bust up that saw them sent off in Galway Utd vs Sligo Rovers

The subsequent row led to both sets of players getting involved to try and separate the two feuding footballers.

And when the dust settled, referee Neil Doyle gave both their marching orders and reducing both teams to ten men.

The row came less than ten minutes after Dyer had brought Galway level with his tenth goal of the season.

The New Zealand international is having a sensational season, and was named the SSE Airtricity Soccer Writers’ Ireland Player of the Month for April after bagging four goals.

He currently leads the Premier Division scoring charts, speaking to how he has quickly adapted to life in Ireland after spells in his native New Zealand, Norway and Canada.

Dyer, 28, said back in May: “It took me a while to get used to the weather and a lot of rain in Galway, the heavy fields, but I feel like I’m starting to get used to it now.

“The landscape is very similar (to New Zealand). Galway is a beach town so every time the sun is out I’m there.

“And the people in Ireland are very real. Very relaxed as well, not a lot of people work here! You go down to the city and the city is packed on a Tuesday at 10am!”

He quickly settled as he helped Galway United into the top half of the table before two losses on the bounce saw them slip to eighth.

Going into Friday night’s game against the Bit O’Red, they were in seventh.

Dyer added: “The games are mad.

“The fans are mad in this league. And the football is fun.

“It’s very fast-paced and a lot of crosses. It’s good for strikers.

“You’re coming to a new country, everything is different. But I just kept training, kept my head down and I believed that I could…

“Even the first few games, I think it took me five games to score. And every game I’d be disappointed, but I knew I could score in this league.

“And now it’s come off, so it’s rewarding.”

UK flight heading to Doha forced to turn back after Iran’s missile strike at Qatar

A FLIGHT bound for Doha has been diverted back to the UK after Iran launched a missile strike against a US airbase in Qatar.

Qatar Airways flight QR28 had reached as far as the western Turkish coastline at around 5.56pm UK time when it dramatically made a U-turn, taking it back to Manchester Airport.

The airline announced at 7.30pm that it had temporarily grounded all flights after Qatar closed its airspace.

Qatar Airways wrote on X: “As a result of the closure of air traffic movement in the State of Qatar, we can confirm the temporary suspension of Qatar Airways flights.

“We are working closely with government stakeholders and the relevant authorities to support any passengers that have been impacted, and will resume operations when the airspace reopens.

“The safety of our passengers and crew remains our highest priority.”

QR28 is not the only Qatar Airways flight from the UK to be affected, with another flight – QR4 from London Heathrow to Doha – also being diverted back to the capital.

The jet made it far over the Mediterranean Sea, between Italy and Greece, before it turned around heading back to London, according to aircraft tracker FlightRadar24.
