Djenairo Daniels rescues late point for Cork City with dramatic 90th minute equaliser against Drogheda Utd

DJENAIRO DANIELS rescued a 96th-minute point for Cork City as Drogheda United failed to hold on at Turner’s Cross.

But Seani Maguire headed over from four yards in the eighth added minute as Ger Nash’s side could not snap their ten-game winless streak.

Sligo Rovers’ win saw Cork fall four points away from the relegation play-off in front of 1,815 fans.

A week after their expulsion from the Conference League was confirmed, Drogs hoped to rebuild their European dreams with another win.

But Shane Farrell’s fine free-kick was not enough as they dropped to third.

City mirrored Drogs’ 3-5-2 shape and started in spirited fashion. But the visitors were celebrating after 12 minutes.

After Milan Mbeng’s foul on Ryan Brennan, Farrell stepped up and unleashed a 25-yard curler over the wall.

It clipped off the post on its way to the net.

That would be Drogs’ only shot of the half.

Kevin Doherty’s side were happy to soak up pressure as City held 74 per cent of possession.

Daniels had a header in front of goal but did not connect properly.

Darragh Crowley’s brilliant floated pass over the cover found Maguire, who guided his looping header wide.

City continued to struggle to translate control into shots on target in the second half.

Drogs hitman Douglas James-Taylor almost capitalised on Freddie Anderson’s poor touch.

But City stopper Tein Troost reacted sharply to save his defender’s blushes by parrying over the crossbar.

Cathal O’Sullivan had a pair of shots blocked before teeing up Rio Shipston, who sidefooted over.

It looked like City had run out of time until Josh Fitzpatrick’s cross was met by Daniels’ bullet header for his fifth goal of the season.

Then, Mbeng fizzed a ball across for Maguire, who diverted his effort just over the bar.

Four couples at risk as new bombshells whisk Love Islanders away for sizzling sleepover

FOUR couples risk being torn apart after a huge twist in tonight’s show.

As the dust settled from the latest recoupling, the villa was rocked by a text out of the blue.

Helena was the one who received it and told her co-stars that a car was waiting outside the villa for her, Emily, Dejon and Remell.

The Islanders were left in shock as the chosen four were whisked away to be introduced to new bombshells Poppy, Caprice, Gio and Will.

Emily, who has had a tough time trying to make her relationship with Conor work, took a savage dig at the rugby lad by saying a gleeful goodbye.

Meanwhile Meg and Alima, who had enjoyed close moments with their respective men – Dejon and Remell – earlier in the evening, were left racked with nerves.

Meg couldn’t even look up as she buried her head in her hands.

The four chosen Islanders couldn’t hide their excitement as they made their way to the waiting cars.

And in a first look at tomorrow night’s episode, the boys in particular look like cats with the cream.

Dejon’s face lights up when Caprice tells him “this could be lit”, while Poppy gets flirty with Remell.

New boy Gio, who’s the brother of Arsenal ladies star Alessia Russo, immediately makes an impression on Helena, who’s been reeling from her rocky romance with Harry.

He beams as he tells her “the quicker I can get in there the better”.

But will all four become fully ledged members of the main villa?

Shelbourne begin life after Damien Duff with a draw as Harry Wood brace salvages a point against Waterford in thriller

HARRY WOOD scored a brace as life after Damien Duff began with a share of the spoils for Shelbourne following a titanic battle with Waterford.

The man who gave Duff his finest moment as Shels chief with the goal that won the league title in Derry last season popped up with an equaliser seconds after Pádraig Amond had put the hosts in front early in the second half at the RSC.

A whirlwind 36 hours for the Tolka Park club saw Joey O’Brien take over as interim manager after Duff’s shock exit on Sunday.

And the ex-assistant was on the edge of the touchline like his predecessor, dishing out the orders as a dramatic start to both halves was the tale of this encounter.

And he could have been celebrating seven minutes into added time.

O’Brien proclaimed in his post-match interview that it was a “mad 24 hours” and that the players were “shocked” by Duff’s departure early on Sunday morning, but that his players were “paid professionals”, and it was Daniel Kelly who nearly won him his first game in the hotseat only to rattle the bar. The post-Duff era was only three minutes old when the champions struck the front.

Tyreke Wilson found space on the left before putting in a cross that saw Mipo Odubeko get a touche that took the ball into the path of Wood at the back post, and he squeezed the ball past Stephen McMullan.

The madness continued five minutes later as Shels gifted their hosts an equalising goal.

McMullan’s long clearance was touched back to Kameron Ledwidge but his header to stopper Conor Kearns fell short before Grant Horton nipped in between defender and keeper to finish to an empty net.

It took strong hands from Blues No  1 McMullan to deny the visitors from regaining the lead on 20 minutes.

Ali Coote cut through the centre before slipping the ball out left to his hitman Odubeko only for his stinging to be kept out.

And when Reds attacker Odubeko outmuscled Darragh Leahy on the right five minutes later, he released Wood into a one-on-one run with Jesse Dempsey.

And after the winger got the better of the battle, he could not beat McMullan, who saved at his near post.

A wind-assisted McMullan goal kick on 41 minutes almost bounced for Amond on 41 minutes but keeper Kearns came out to collect just in front of the striker.

An incredible start to the first-half was bettered by a kamikaze start to the second.

Within three minutes, the champions were the cause of their own downfall again as they fell behind.

Paddy Barrett got his clearance all wrong and Conan Noonan’s effort was parried by Kearns but striker Amond was on hand to finish the rebound from close range.

Sixty seconds later though, interim chief O’Brien was celebrating after Mark Coyle made a lung-bursting run towards goal.

He then sprayed the ball out for Ali Coote who put in a teasing delivery and Wood was on hand to touch home.

There was even time for more drama in the seventh added minute of five added on as the impressive Wood burst from midfield to slip the ball out wide right for Kelly — who let fly with a thunderous strike. But his effort came crashing back off the bar with McMullan beaten.

‘Dead’ English ghost town that lost its Wetherspoons & McDonald’s is turning its fortunes around with £15million revamp

A ‘DEAD’ English ghost town which lost its Wetherspoons and McDonald’s has turned around its fortunes with a huge £15m revamp.

Some of the 64,000 locals living in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, have previously slammed their town for having “gone downhill rapidly” – but new investment aims to reverse this decline.

Kirklees Council has committed millions of pounds to update Dewsbury’s market and to create a new park for residents.

Officials say the updated market would have a “more varied, day-to-night offering” with more spaces for eating, drinking, socialising and events.

On top of this, a new park would be constructed next to the market – offering the largest green space in the town with its own play area and seating.

Councillor Graham Turner said: “Once we unveiled our updated plans for Dewsbury Market, the adjoining park was very much the missing piece.

“These are both aspects of the town we know local people greatly care about, and they have a huge part to play in Dewsbury’s future.”

The Sun had reported in 2023 how locals in the town felt it had been ruined by drunks and people smoking cannabis – adding that it had lost several shops and pubs.

This included Dewbury’s Wetherspoons, McDonald’s, and Mecca Bingo hall.

But now, residents will likely feel hopeful that this new £15m investment could give the town a new lease of life.

Kirklees Council said the new park is intended to “transition smoothly into the market’s outdoor offering” before eventually merging with the indoor market.

Other improvement works can be found in the town, with the Dewsbury Arcade – which lies adjacent to the market – set to reopen next year, around the same time work on the market and park is due to begin.

Once all the respective work is complete, the number of trees in the town centre would greatly increase, Kirklees Council added.

Officials said that the area surrounding the connected park and market would also benefit as the nearby Foundry Street would be earmarked for greening and pedestrian-friendly plans.

Previously, residents had explained how they were sickened by the town’s state.

Speaking in 2023, Matthew, 43, told YorkshireLive: “It’s a bit grim. People tapping and drunks bothering people.

“And cannabis raids. It stinks and turns my stomach.”

Domesday English town is transforming its seafront with splash park, pop-up markets & new walkways in £7.2m makeover

A DOMESDAY English town is transforming its seafront with a splash park, pop-up markets and new walkways in a £7.2m makeover.

It is hoped the improvements will attract more visitors to boost the town’s economy.

Improvements to Littlehampton’s seafront between East Beach, South Terrace and Windmill Road got underway in the autumn.

The town, seaside resort and civil parish sits in the Arun District of West Sussex.

The work is being funded by a £7 million levelling up fund from the government and it is hoped the improvements will attract more visitors to boost the town’s economy.

The revamp includes new toilets and beach showers, improvements to the car park, including electric vehicle charging points, walkways and new sustainable planting.

A new water play area and a pop-up marketplace off Banjo Road with four fixed stalls will also come to the beach.

An activity hub is also planned to include a bouldering wall, beach volleyball, petanque and basketball courts.

Waterfalls, rock pools and water jets will be installed for the water play area.

There will also be social spaces throughout the development to include pergolas, picnic tables and benches, that will be shaded by new trees and plants.

Chris Butterworth, 60, added that the closure of his favourite local pubs and shops had left him “depressed”, saying the town had “gone downhill rapidly”.

Jo, 49, added: ” It is run down and the shops are closed, with undesirable people.

“I would not walk through Dewsbury after dark. I would be too scared.”

Elizabeth Cleal, 21, and her mum Sarah Jones, 42, both agreed the town was “dead”, with shops shutting left, right, and centre.

‘Almost impossible to train’ – Chelsea draft in huge FANS to combat extreme ‘code red’ Club World Cup conditions

ENZO MARESCA claims the heat is hitting Chelsea’s Club World Cup bid because it is “almost impossible to train”.

The Blues boss cut short his final training session ahead of their decisive Group D game with ES Tunis as temperatures neared 40C.

And with Philadelphia under a ‘Code Red’ severe weather alert, it is still likely to be well over 30C when they play in the early hours of Wednesday morning — at 9pm local time.

Chelsea used giant fans to spray cold water over sweltering players during a brief tactical session.

Maresca said: “It is almost impossible to train  because of the weather.

“We are just trying to save energy for the game.

“This morning’s session has been very, very short.

“It’s been just about tomorrow’s game, planning for tomorrow and that’s it.

“It’s not easy in these conditions with these temperatures. We are going to try to do our best.”

A draw would take the Blues through to the knockout stages with a likely date against Harry Kane’s Bayern Munich on Saturday.

Chelsea captain Reece James missed training due to illness.

Maresca said: “It’s difficult to work in these temperatures but we are trying our best and will try to win tomorrow.

“It’s impossible to do a normal session, otherwise you don’t save energy for the game. So the session this morning was quite short.

“We are not training, almost. We are just doing very, very, very short sessions.

“We try just to be clinical and do the right things that we need for game preparation. We have the cooling break during the game which helps a little.”

Nicolas Jackson did not join training as he is banned after his red card in the 3-1 defeat to Flamengo.

‘We’re here to try and find answers’, says detective as gardai investigating Jon Jonsson disappearance travel to Iceland

THE IRISH cops have travelled to Iceland as part of their ongoing probe into the disappearance of an Icelandic man in Dublin six years ago.

Jon Jonsson, 41, travelled to Ireland to play at the 2019 Dublin Poker Festival, but vanished within 24 hours of arrival.

Jon vanished after leaving the Bonnington Hotel in Dublin six years ago

Investigating detectives made a fresh appeal for information about his sudden disappearance as they recently stepped up the investigation into his disappearance in recent months.

The father of four was reported to have vanished after leaving the Bonnington Hotel on Swords Road in North Dublin in February 2019.

He left his hotel room without his phone, passport and wallet, although he may have had a large sum of cash with him.

Since early March 2019, when Icelandic search and rescue teams searched a defined search area in the city after receiving a tip that suggested he may have gotten into a taxi, the case has made little to no progress.

Five gardai from the Ballymun station will spend the week in Reykjavik, Iceland, interviewing 45 Icelandic citizens in hopes of obtaining information that may help pinpoint his whereabouts.

Detective Superintendent Alan Brady revealed they are there for a number of purposes.

Talking to RTE News, he said: “We came here to interview a large number of people who we think may have some information in relation to where Jon is.

“We’ve also come here to appeal to the Icelandic public for help in finding Jon.

“We believe that whatever happened to Jon did happen to him in Dublin, but the answers to what happened to Jon may lie here amongst the Icelandic community.”

He added: “Jon’s family have been going through heartbreak for the last six and a half years. We’re here to try and find answers for them. No family should have to ensure that they’ve gone through.”

RESPONSE ‘POSITIVE’

Talking to the Iceland Review, Icelandic Detective Eirikur Valberg said: “We’ve contacted nearly everyone on the list provided by the Irish police, and the response has been very positive.

“People are showing up and are willing to give statements.”

However, he declined to comment on whether any of the individuals had any connections to the case or Jon himself.

The interviews are scheduled to take place this week, with Eirikur hoping that they will shed new light on his disappearance.

‘WHERE IS JON?’

He added: “Of course, that is our hope—but we don’t know in advance what will come of this. Still, we wouldn’t be undertaking such extensive efforts if we didn’t believe they could yield results.”

The documentary podcast series ‘Where is Jon?’ (‘Hvar er Jon?’) focused on his sudden disappearance, which was collaboratively produced by Ireland’s national broadcaster RTE and the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service RUV.

In the final episode, which aired in March, the two anonymous letters that are being discussed by the investigating teams were revealed.

It was pointed out that the letters were delivered to the Gardai one year apart, suggesting that Jon may be buried in a garden.

However, the location of the potential site of his burial was not disclosed.

Rivals cashing in after stadium renovated at cost of £1.5billion hit with concert ban that is seeing them lose millions

REAL MADRID are losing millions after the Santiago Bernabeu was banned from hosting concerts.

The iconic ground underwent a stunning £1.5billion renovation last year to make it a world-class arena for both football and other events.

Taylor Swift was one of many megastars to perform at the Bernabeu following its opening 12 months ago.

But the project masterminded by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez to see the biggest names in music take to their stage has failed.

Neighbours have filed a legal compliant over noise levels and gigs have been cancelled.

The court case remains ongoing and Real Madrid’s bitter rivals Atletico are profiting from it.

Several concerts have switched to their Metropolitano Stadium ten miles down the road.

Ed Sheeran, Imagine Dragons and AC/DC among those playing at the home of Atleti this summer.

The Bernabeu’s neighbours registered noise levels to be above 90 decibels during the shows last year.

Local Enrique Martínez de Azagra told the BBC that the noise from concerts is different to football atmospheres.

BEST ONLINE CASINOS – TOP SITES IN THE UK

He said: “It is impossible to suffer this kind of noise and it affects our health, it affects migraines, insomnia and heart attacks and it is a criminal offence in our laws.

“Football is a sport that lasts two hours, more or less. The noise is normal. Only when there is a goal, the passion surges.”

Real Madrid are reportedly working on a plan to “soundproof” their stadium.

Yet critics like neighbour Enrique claim it would be “impossible”.

Real Madrid supposedly generate revenue of £1million per day via their stadium through tickets, tours and merchandise sold.

Derry City pile more pain on St Patrick’s Athletic as Liam Boyce goal sends Stephen Kenny’s men to third loss in a row

A WELL-WORKED and well-taken goal by veteran striker Liam Boyce brought Derry City further capital gains with this smash-and-grab victory at Richmond Park.

Though they deserved their 1-0 win over Shelbourne at Tolka Park on Friday, Derry rode their luck in Inchicore as Saints could not find a way to goal despite a dominant display.

Following losses to Shels and Galway United, this marked a third defeat on the bounce for the first time in Stephen Kenny’s 13-month tenure.

It is also four games without a home win and just two victories from their last ten matches as Pat’s remain in the bottom half of the table. Needing a result and a performance after two defeats on the bounce, Saints made two changes from Friday’s 3-1 defeat in Galway.

Seán Hoare replaced Tom Grivosti in defence while attacking midfielder Brandon Kavanagh came in to play behind Mason Melia as Aidan Keena dropped to the bench.

And Kenny’s side showed their positive intent within two minutes when Jay McClelland got forward from left-back to bring a comfortable save from Brian Maher.

Hoare was then given a free header from Kavanagh’s first corner of the night on six minutes, but planted it straight at the Derry keeper.

With the energy of Barry Baggley, Simon Power and Zack Elbouzedi across midfield, Saints maintained their bright start.

Power worked a yard of space on the left to cross for Kavanagh whose acrobatic volley was over the top.

Not surprisingly, unchanged from their deserved big win at Shelbourne, Derry were labouring to get a foothold in the game as Saints continued to dominate the ball.

That changed midway through the half after St Pat’s were angered by a double booking for Jamie Lennon and Hoare following a foul on Michael Duffy.

It led to Derry finally enjoying some possession, forcing a couple of corners which came to nothing, before striking with a superbly constructed goal on 29 minutes.

Building from the back, skipper Mark Connolly found Carl Winchester in space in midfield.

He fed the run of Duffy who opened Saints up with the help of a decoy run from Gavin Whyte.

The ball was spread wide for overlapping right-back Ronan Boyce whose cross was turned home by namesake striker Boyce with a glancing header for the 34-year-old’s fifth goal of the season.

As in the first half, St Pat’s began the second on the front foot, almost levelling within a minute of the resumption.

Skipper Joe Redmond and McClelland worked the ball down the left for Baggley but Melia could not get enough on his cross as Maher made an easy save.

Maher had more to do on 57 minutes when a terrific break on the counter from Melia tore Derry open to set up Power, whose drive was saved.

Saints owned the ball from there but struggled to work Maher as Derry held on for another three points in Dublin.

THE daughter of an anti-vaxxer conspiracy theorist nurse died of blood cancer after listening to her and refusing treatment, her brothers claim.

Cambridge graduate Paloma Shemirani, 23, died last year after being diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

The Miss Brighton finalist refused chemo despite doctors saying it would give her an 80 per cent chance of survival.

Instead, she listened to her mum Kate, 60, who was struck off the UK’s nursing register in 2021 for discouraging masks and Covid vaccines.

She claimed the Covid virus was linked to the roll-out of 5G technology, and a political tool to gain access to and change people’s DNA.

Brothers Gabriel and Sebastian said she might still be alive if she had not caved in to pressure.

Sebastian told the BBC: “My sister has passed away as a direct consequence of my mum’s actions and beliefs.”

Kate, now 60, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012 and had the tumour removed through surgery, undergoing a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery.

But online, she appears to suggest she was healed following ‘Gerson therapy’ – a baseless form of alternative medicine.

Mrs Shemirani has not commented on the claim.
