IF you want to avoid the Greek crowds and a more intimate experience, then you should try one of the country’s smallest islands.
While Halki still has the classic colourful buildings and traditional tavernas, it has a quieter feel than its neighbour, Rhodes.
AlamyHalki, or Chalki, is an island two hours away from Rhodes[/caption]
AlamyHalki is not for party-goers but suits people seeking a laid back holiday[/caption]
Halki, also spelled as Chalki, is the smallest inhabited island in Greece.
Most of them live in the main town and port of Halki island, called Nimporio, also known as Emporio.
The beautiful town is full of colourful houses with terracotta roofs and small tavernas and cafes.
The town curves around the harbour where the small boats dock and because of that, there are plenty of places to sit and take in the view with a glass of Greek wine and food.
For anyone looking for a party island, this is not the one for you.
Halki is known for being peaceful so, except for swimming in the calm beaches, don’t expect much to do.
There is a medieval castle that sits on top of a huge and rocky hill above Chorio village – which is largely abandoned.
The 14th century castle was built to protect the island from pirates – now you can go for a hike up to the ruins.
Popular beaches include Kania Beach, Potamos Beach, Ftenagia Beach and Trachia Beach.

The bell tower is the largest out of the Dodecanese IslandsAlamy
Ftenagia Beach has been described as a “stunning” beach with “unrivalled” views.
Another wrote on Tripadvisor: “It is our favourite spot to swim. The sea is turquoise and shimmers in the light.”
The beaches are relatively quiet as the island sees around 1,500 to 1,700 visitors each summer – compared to Rhodes who recorded over 3.5 million visitors last year.
Halki has impressive bell tower that hovers high into the sky is the tallest of any found in the Dodecanese Islands.
The water is clear and great for snorkelling to spot various types of fish – even dolphins and sea turtles if you’re lucky.

To get to the island, travellers will need to fly to Athens, then to Rhodes, then take a two hour ferry.
Ferry tickets from Rhodes to Halki can be found for as low as £4 when booked in advance, with the average ticket costing around £6.
There are good options to stay on the island with some Airbnb apartments that look over the harbour starting from £71 per night.
One Greek island is becoming more well-known and is set to rival the likes of Santorini...
A new study has named the island of Paros as a trending destination for this year. American Express Travel included the island in their 2025 Trending Destinations list.
Analysing travel bookings as well as working with global travel consultants, the island was one of the few European destinations to make the list.
The website states: “Laid-back Paros has become the Greek
island of choice for many. The cultural scene is vibrant here, and the rocky coastline is studded with beaches, secluded coves, and sea caves.
“A mere 40-minute flight from Athens—or three hours on a ferry—this windblown retreat is also easy to get to.”
Around 200,000 people visit a year – just 10 per cent of the annual tourists that go to Santorini. This means you can expect the island to be much quieter, and off-the-beaten track.
The town of Naoussa is the second largest town on the island and has been called a “smaller version of Mykonos”.
Expect amazing seafood when there too, with most of it caught at fresh before being served up.

GettyWaterlooville, UK – April 29, 2018: Poundland is a British variety store chain founded in 1990, with a single price-point on most items costing £1. Advertising and products clearly visible within and the logo prominent above.[/caption]
POUNDLAND is urgently recalling a kids clothing item over a serious choking risk as shoppers are urged to “return it fast”.
Parents have been advised to stop using the product “immediately” and return it to the store for a refund.
PoundlandThe children’s item is said to present a serious choking hazard[/caption]
The item in question is the Bbe Frotte Blue Cap made by Pepco which is reported to have been made in China.
It has been found to pose a serious choking risk to children as the button on the cap can detach.
The Office for Product Safety & Standards warn that “a young child may put the small part in their mouth and choke”.
As a result, the product does not meet the requirements of the General Product Safety Regulations 2005.
They have subsequently been recalled from end users by Poundland.
The regulator has advised that consumers stop using the product immediately and return it to the store for a full refund with no receipt required.
Poundland also issued a notice which said: “If you have bought the above product, do not use it.
“Instead return it to a Poundland Store for a full refund (no proof of purchase required).
“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.
“However, the safety and confidence of our consumers and the quality of our products is at the heart of everything we do.”
This isn’t the only children’s product that has been recalled in the UK recently either.
The product contained excess concentrations of boron which can harm the health of children and their reproductive systems.
Your product recall rights
Chief consumer reporter James Flanders reveals all you need to know.
Product recalls are an important means of protecting consumers from dangerous goods.
As a general rule, if a recall involves a branded product, the manufacturer would usually have lead responsibility for the recall action.
But it’s often left up to supermarkets to notify customers when products could put them at risk.
If you are concerned about the safety of a product you own, always check the manufacturer’s website to see if a safety notice has been issued.
When it comes to appliances, rather than just food items, the onus is usually on you – the customer – to register the appliance with the manufacturer as if you don’t there is no way of contacting you to tell you about a fault.
If you become aware that an item you own has been recalled or has any safety noticed issued against it, make sure you follow the instructions given to you by the manufacturer.
They should usually provide you with more information and a contact number on its safety notice.
In some cases, the manufacturer might ask you to return the item for a full refund or arrange for the faulty product to be collected.
You should not be charged for any recall work – such as a repair, replacement or collection of the recalled item.

A GLOBAL car brand are set to launch a new mid-size electric SUV that could rival Tesla’s Model Y.
British-founded company MG are due to unleash their latest electric offering at the start of this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, Autocar reported.
IMMOTORSThe mystery car is believed to be the MG IM6, already on the roads in Australia[/caption]
MG /InstagramMG teased the release of the new vehicle in a post on Instagram on Tuesday[/caption]
GettyThe IM6 (not pictured) is able to complete a 30-80 per cent top-up in 15 minutes[/caption]
The event takes place over a four-day period from Thursday July 10 to Sunday July 13 this year.
MG whetted motorists appetites with a brief tease on Instagram of a black vehicle with stylish thin red lighting against a dark background.
The image featured the slogan “All will be revealed” while the post was captioned “The beginning of our next chapter 10.07.25.”
While MG is yet to name the mystery car, eagle-eyed auto lovers believe it is the IM6.
IM is a joint venture between SAIC, Alibaba and Zhangjiang Hi-Tech – which has previously been tipped to hit European car markets.
The more premium-focused brand has already been rolled out in the Asutralian market and Asia.
The high-powered IM6 is available in China with up to 767bhp, with its top spec models doing 0-62mph in a reported 3.5 seconds.
The vehicle is also speedy at charging, with its 800V electricals meaning it is able to complete a charge from 30 per cent to 80 per cent in slightly over 15 minutes.
Since the car was posted by MG, there is speculation it could be sold under the MG marque in the UK.
MG was founded by race-car driver Cecil Kimber in the 1920s, with a simple at its heart philosophy: “A sports car should look fast even when it is standing still”
The M.G. Car Company was the British sports car manufacturer from 1930 to 1972 and made the marque well known.
However, since 2007 the marque has been controlled by Chinese state-owned automaker SAIC Motor.
It has reported for some time now that the IM brand was set to make the geographic leap to Europe, with the L6 saloon on display at MG’s flagship showroom in London.
MG has already started to tack towards the premium market with its launch of the Cyberster sports car and the Cyber X concept.
The Chinese-owned carmarker has also rolled out models like the S5 EV, a more mainstream replacement for the value-focused ZS EV.

GOVERNMENT leaders have come under fire for re-hashing an “empty” plan to revitalise Dublin city centre with no funding or new actions.
The media were invited to a rare press conference with all three Government leaders today – a set piece usually only reserved for major announcements.
GettyAn ’empty’ plan to revitalise Dublin city centre has been blasted[/caption]
PASimon Harris promised that the plan would be ‘backed by clear funding’[/caption]
Taoiseach Micheal Martin, Tanaiste Simon Harris and Minister Sean Canney teamed up to announce the backing of the capital city report to revamp Dublin.
Despite glowing speeches from all three leaders about the importance of our capital city, the announcement was void of details such as costings, hard timelines or new actions.
For example, crime is often cited as one of the main reasons why people are avoiding Dublin city centre.
Last year’s Dublin city taskforce recommended adding 1,000 more gardai to the capital.
Today’s announcement included no detail on how they will hit this target with the Taoiseach giving a loose commitment that it would be achieved within ten years but with no timelines for that roll-out.
The big plan also piggy backed on a series of building revamps that are already underway or announced including refurbs of the GPO, the Abbey Theatre, the Ambassador Theatre and the Fruit and Vegetable Market.
Derelict buildings in the city will be converted into high density accomodation for essential workers – a proposal also previously announced last year.
Despite Simon Harris promising that the plan would be “backed by clear funding” and Taoiseach Micheal Martin committing to “significant new public investments” – the announcement included zero numbers on how much money will be invested in the capital.
A spokesperson for the Taoiseach told the Irish Sun that there will be funding announced in the National Development Plan with immediate cash for the plan coming from the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund – but with no details on how much.
The only concrete mention of funding for these changes came in the form of a commitment to “examine” the introduction of a tourist tax on hotel rooms which could raise between €4 million to €41 million and would be ring fenced for the city council.
The plan is also light on ways to help boost the number of people living in the city centre by increasing the number of properties to rent or buy in Dublin or make them more affordable.
Instead, it includes promises to “engage with local property owners” on dereliction and a commitment to “support the transformation for key vacant sites.”
The Irish Businesses Against Litter annual survey has regularly named Dublin’s north inner city as one of the dirtiest places in the country.
The report does include plans to tackle this by ensuring on-street bagged waste restrictions are put in place and 24 hour cleaning is brought in for the O’Connell Street area.
While the plan mentions re-energising the night time economy in Dublin, Taoiseach Micheal Martin today played down the chances of nightclubs being able to open until 6am as planned by the last Government.
SAME AGAIN
Former Justice Minister Helen McEntee had started work on modernising Ireland’s liquor laws to allow pubs open later and night clubs open until 6am.
Taoiseach Martin claimed that work is ongoing on this but refused to commit to allowing nightclubs open until 6am while Simon Harris said there are concerns about a city opening later without appropriate resources for policing or public transport.
Social Democrat TD Gary Gannon today blasted the Government for repeatedly re-hashing the Dublin taskforce plan but with no real commitments or cash to help revamp the city.
The Dublin Central TD said: “I thought after four press conferences and two years we would hear some detail but when I listened in I got a rehash of the same announcements that have been made three times already.
“There is absolutely nothing here. The city is in decline. It needs leadership.
“We thought that this is what that was going to be about but it just seems to be a useful press release for you.”

DARA O’SHEA has snubbed potential Premier League moves by committing his future to Ipswich and signed a new five-year deal.
O’Shea, 26, joined the Tractor Boys from relegated Burnley last season and was one of Ipswich’s standout performers despite their demotion to the Championship.
That led to interest from former club Burnley, as well as newly-promoted Leeds United and Wolves.
But the Dubliner has now settled his future by signing a new contract at Ipswich, a year after signing his original five-year deal with the club.
He said: “I’m really happy and very proud to have signed a new contract at Ipswich Town.
“We learned a lot last season and that will be really important for us going forward. I’m glad to have signed this new contract and I am ready to get to work again in pre-season.
“There are good characters and good human beings at this club and I want to help deliver success again and help the club get back into the Premier League.
“This is a massive club but it can continue to grow and I’m excited.”
Boss Kieran McKenna, who there was also speculation could leave this summer, was thrilled that O’Shea has agreed a new deal.
McKenna added: “He has been an important figure for us since his arrival last summer, putting in consistently good performances on the pitch while also bringing character and leadership to the group off it.
“He has real experience, despite still being relatively young for a central defender, and we believe he has the ability to further improve in the years to come.
“We’re excited to now be working with him for an extended period as we continue to prepare for the season ahead.”
