Martin & Harris grilled over ’empty’ Dublin plan with lack of funding or timeline promises & ‘city in decline’ fear
GOVERNMENT leaders have come under fire for re-hashing an “empty” plan to revitalise Dublin city centre with no funding or new actions.
The media were invited to a rare press conference with all three Government leaders today – a set piece usually only reserved for major announcements.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin, Tanaiste Simon Harris and Minister Sean Canney teamed up to announce the backing of the capital city report to revamp Dublin.
Despite glowing speeches from all three leaders about the importance of our capital city, the announcement was void of details such as costings, hard timelines or new actions.
For example, crime is often cited as one of the main reasons why people are avoiding Dublin city centre.
Last year’s Dublin city taskforce recommended adding 1,000 more gardai to the capital.
Today’s announcement included no detail on how they will hit this target with the Taoiseach giving a loose commitment that it would be achieved within ten years but with no timelines for that roll-out.
The big plan also piggy backed on a series of building revamps that are already underway or announced including refurbs of the GPO, the Abbey Theatre, the Ambassador Theatre and the Fruit and Vegetable Market.
Derelict buildings in the city will be converted into high density accomodation for essential workers – a proposal also previously announced last year.
Despite Simon Harris promising that the plan would be “backed by clear funding” and Taoiseach Micheal Martin committing to “significant new public investments” – the announcement included zero numbers on how much money will be invested in the capital.
A spokesperson for the Taoiseach told the Irish Sun that there will be funding announced in the National Development Plan with immediate cash for the plan coming from the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund – but with no details on how much.
The only concrete mention of funding for these changes came in the form of a commitment to “examine” the introduction of a tourist tax on hotel rooms which could raise between €4 million to €41 million and would be ring fenced for the city council.
The plan is also light on ways to help boost the number of people living in the city centre by increasing the number of properties to rent or buy in Dublin or make them more affordable.
Instead, it includes promises to “engage with local property owners” on dereliction and a commitment to “support the transformation for key vacant sites.”
The Irish Businesses Against Litter annual survey has regularly named Dublin’s north inner city as one of the dirtiest places in the country.
The report does include plans to tackle this by ensuring on-street bagged waste restrictions are put in place and 24 hour cleaning is brought in for the O’Connell Street area.
While the plan mentions re-energising the night time economy in Dublin, Taoiseach Micheal Martin today played down the chances of nightclubs being able to open until 6am as planned by the last Government.
SAME AGAIN
Former Justice Minister Helen McEntee had started work on modernising Ireland’s liquor laws to allow pubs open later and night clubs open until 6am.
Taoiseach Martin claimed that work is ongoing on this but refused to commit to allowing nightclubs open until 6am while Simon Harris said there are concerns about a city opening later without appropriate resources for policing or public transport.
Social Democrat TD Gary Gannon today blasted the Government for repeatedly re-hashing the Dublin taskforce plan but with no real commitments or cash to help revamp the city.
The Dublin Central TD said: “I thought after four press conferences and two years we would hear some detail but when I listened in I got a rehash of the same announcements that have been made three times already.
“There is absolutely nothing here. The city is in decline. It needs leadership.
“We thought that this is what that was going to be about but it just seems to be a useful press release for you.”
Ireland defender Dara O’Shea makes final decision on Ipswich Town future amid interest from Premier League newcomers
DARA O’SHEA has snubbed potential Premier League moves by committing his future to Ipswich and signed a new five-year deal.
O’Shea, 26, joined the Tractor Boys from relegated Burnley last season and was one of Ipswich’s standout performers despite their demotion to the Championship.
That led to interest from former club Burnley, as well as newly-promoted Leeds United and Wolves.
But the Dubliner has now settled his future by signing a new contract at Ipswich, a year after signing his original five-year deal with the club.
He said: “I’m really happy and very proud to have signed a new contract at Ipswich Town.
“We learned a lot last season and that will be really important for us going forward. I’m glad to have signed this new contract and I am ready to get to work again in pre-season.
“There are good characters and good human beings at this club and I want to help deliver success again and help the club get back into the Premier League.
“This is a massive club but it can continue to grow and I’m excited.”
Boss Kieran McKenna, who there was also speculation could leave this summer, was thrilled that O’Shea has agreed a new deal.
McKenna added: “He has been an important figure for us since his arrival last summer, putting in consistently good performances on the pitch while also bringing character and leadership to the group off it.
“He has real experience, despite still being relatively young for a central defender, and we believe he has the ability to further improve in the years to come.
“We’re excited to now be working with him for an extended period as we continue to prepare for the season ahead.”

Biggest mistake when treating a wound is letting it ‘dry out’, TV doc says
THE biggest mistake when treating a wound is letting it ‘dry out’ – which could lead to needing professional treatment, expert reveals.
TV medic, Dr Zoe, highlighted the dangers of believing what she claims is the biggest myth in wound care.

If left uncovered, even tiny cuts can get infected and activities where it will get wet such as showering or swimming can cause the skin to swell.
This not only impairs wound closure, but bacteria and germs can penetrate the body and cause infection.
The insights come as a poll of 2,000 adults, commissioned by Elastoplast, found 42 per cent are under the impression letting a wound breathe is the best way for it to heal.
But Dr Zoe said leaving a graze to air increases the likelihood of infection and instead recovers quickly if they are in a moist, clean environment, which also helps reduce scarring.
Dr Zoe said: “Even small or seemingly insignificant wounds benefit from being covered, but of course it’s also important to clean a graze beforehand.
“Protecting a wound with a dressing can be supported by using a healing ointment or using a hydrocolloid plaster which allows the cut to maintain a moist environment and offer benefits including improved pain relief and longer wear.
“This is not only important for rapid healing, but also to minimise scarring.”
DR ZOE’S FIVE STEPS FOR TREATING A WOUND
1. Wash hands thoroughly
2. Rinse the wound with clean water or wound spray
3. Gently dry with a clean cloth
4. Cover with a suitable sized plaster
5. Seek wound care guidance from a healthcare professional if the wound isn’t healing properly
The research also found only 14 per cent of those polled think wounds should be kept moist to heal faster and a fifth (20 per cent) do typically let a wound air before covering it.
Other mistakes Brits have made include using the incorrect plaster size (34 per cent), despite 84 per cent feeling confident knowing what type to use.
A further 27 per cent have touched a wound before washing their hands and 47 per cent have picked at a scab – which Dr Zoe warned can delay the healing process.
Almost a fifth (19 per cent) have had a seemingly harmless graze which resulted in scarring, while others have experienced infection (17 per cent) and swelling (16 per cent).
The situations in which adults have gained a wound include doing indoor DIY work (39 per cent) and hiking or walking (27 per cent).
Others have experienced injury when cycling or mountain biking (19 per cent) and playing team sports (23 per cent), according to the OnePoll data.
A spokesperson for Elastoplast, which has launched Second Skin Protection plasters, said: “Treating a small wound might seem simple, but it’s crucial to follow the right steps to avoid infection and scarring.
“The insights show how public perceptions often differ from expert advice, which may explain why some people have gone on to develop complications like scarring or infection.
“We want to ensure people feel confident and prepared for treating wounds in all situations, whether they’re being adventurous outdoors, exploring as a family or going about daily life.
“Being prepared makes all the difference.”
Horror moment reveller is smashed in head with BOTTLE during Magaluf brawl as two Brit tourists arrested over clash
THIS is the horrifying moment a man is smashed in the head with a glass bottle during a Magaluf brawl.
Two Brits have been arrested for attempted murder after they allegedly slashed customers and staff at a restaurant during the late-night assault.

They are reportedly a 24-year-old and a 33-year-old who have also been charged with injuries and serious disturbance of public order.
Shocking CCTV captured the savage attack as a tourist was seen grabbing a bottle before crashing it onto the back of a reveller’s head.
The man went on to try and throw a punch at others with two people being left injured.
The 24-year-old Brit was held after cops rushed to the party resort and saw him confronting others as he was covered in blood and waved a broken bottle in his hand.
It is unclear if either of the British men are the ones in the footage.
According to witnesses, the man, his companion and two other people who had fled, had assaulted both employees and two unknown people, customers of the restaurant.
Several ambulances were called to the scene with three victims being rushed to the Son Espases Hospital.
They suffered wounds on their neck, head, arms and legs, local media reports.
A spokesman for the Civil Guard confirmed: “Two people aged 24 and 33 have been arrested on suspicion of attempted homicide, wounding and causing serious public disorder following an incident at a nightspot in Palmanova.
“The arrests occurred in the early hours of Sunday.”
They added: “Officers sent to Majorca as part of summer reinforcements were carrying out routine security patrols when they were alerted a mass might was occurring in a premises near to where they were.
“They saw a man covered in blood brandishing a broken bottle who was attacking others present.
“They quickly reduced him and got the broken bottle off him.”
Two other people fled the scene before police arrived, police added.
The nationality of those injured has not been revealed.
It is also not yet known if the two Brits have been formally charged or have appeared in court.
It comes after shocking footage captured the moment a Magaluf doorman floored a British tourist with a flurry of punches after being bottled in a horror attack.
The bouncer was left with a nasty gash that needed at least 20 stitches – and the Brit has now been convicted over the assault at Plaza on the bustling Punta Ballena strip.
CCTV footage showed the Lithuanian bouncer exploding at Max Barnes, then 19, who he has up against a wall after the drinker bottled him.
He unloads a series of sharp jabs in the packed nightspot, acting in self-defence.
The customer dodges as many as he can but some of the blows land home.
The fight spills into the middle of the bar, where the bouncer delivers one more clean whack that sends the customer sprawling onto the floor.
He then brings his hand to his blood-covered face and neck to inspect the damage.
The 34-year-old doorman was left with a gash needing 20 stitches, a court was told.
Major boost for DIY enthusiasts as popular chain store launches Irish website with home delivery or click & collect
A MAJOR boost for DIY enthusiasts and gardeners is on the way as a popular chain store is launching an Irish website – with home delivery or click & collect options.
Homebase is set to launch an Irish website this August, giving shoppers an easy way to browse and buy from the popular home and garden store.

The new site goes live this August and will offer a huge range of over 40,000 items, from DIY tools and decorating supplies to garden furniture and storage solutions.
A first for the popular DIY store, customers will now be able to order online for home delivery.
And they can also use the click and collect service, picking up items in as little as one hour at Garden Centre by Homebase locations within The Range stores.
It follows a major revamp of the UK site and is part of an initiative by CDS Superstores to boost digital shopping and improve customer experience.
The company, which also owns The Range and wilko has been making changes since acquiring the Homebase brand in late 2024.
Since then, 55 former Homebase stores have been converted into The Range superstores with the launch of new Garden Centres in-store.
And eight of those openings have been in Ireland.
The Irish website aims to build on this by offering everything from paint and power tools to BBQs and garden furniture.
Speaking about the relaunch, CDS Superstores says it combines trusted products with a modern shopping experience that works better for today’s customers.
They’ve also been working on broader digital upgrades across their brands, from easier navigation to faster checkout and better online deals.
Group CEO Alex Simpkin said Ireland is a key market for the business, and the new site reflects their goal to bring value and convenience to more shoppers.
He said: “We’re thrilled to soon be bringing Homebase.IE to Irish online shoppers with a revitalised shopping experience.
“This relaunch is part of our wider commitment to delivering value, quality, and convenience to our customers across Ireland, which is a key market for the business.”
Customers can now join the waitlist to unlock exclusive launch deals by signing up online at the Homebase.ie subscription page.

Forgotten soap star shows off huge £27million LA mansion after quitting fame and marrying a multimillionaire
A FORGOTTEN Home and Away star has shown off her plush £27million mansion seven years on from leaving the soap.
Pia Whitesell appeared in the programme as Kat Chapman between 2015 and 2018 but she is now living a life that is worlds away from the Aussie soap opera.

The 41-year-old actress is now living it up in a stunning £27million Bel Air mansion with her husband, Hollywood super agent, Patrick Whitesell.
She took to Instagram this week to share a glimpse of the luxury swimming pool at the abode.
The huge pool is surrounded by half a dozen sun loungers complete with parasols.
The glam actress revelled in her luxurious surroundings as she captioned the snap with “How’s the serenity?,” in reference to the 1997 movie.
The Hollywood super-rich couple’s home even includes its own maids quarters and boasts over 19,000 sq ft.
As they renovated the home, the couple stayed in their oceanfront Malibu mansion.
Pia and Patrick tied the knot in 2021 after he popped the question in late 2020.
Her engagement ring is believed to be worth between $1.1m and $1.9mAUD.
She was previously married to AFL footballer Brad Miller.
Patrick is the boss of Hollywood media empire Endeavor, former known as WME.
It is the talent agency to the stars representing a whole host of the world’s A-list talent.
It has earned him an estimated net worth of £303million.
The agency had dedicated teams looking after talent such as Jude Law, Hugh Jackman, Ben Affleck and the Kardashian family.
LIFE BEFORE HOLLYWOOD
Before striking it lucky in Los Angeles, Pia began her career as a model aged 14 in Australia.
After three years as a fledling teen model, she took part in reality TV show Make Me A Supermodel in 2001 which landed her a contract with L’Oreal.
She transitioned into acting and TV hosting in 2011 before landing her part in Home and Away in 2015.
Her last acting role was in 2019 when she appeared in a live-action Dora The Explorer movie.
She soon retired from acting shortly after and upon meeting Patrick.
