THIS is the moment floodwaters surge through a shopping centre in southwest China – as the region faces its highest flood levels in decades.
Murky torrents flow from escalators and upper floors, sweeping shop objects away in dramatic scenes.

In footage filmed on Tuesday at the largest shopping mall in Rongjiang County, Guizhou, torrents of water can be seen cascading down escalators and upper floors.
Various objects – some appearing to be items of clothing, others chairs – are dragged into the currents.
Cars were also reportedly washed into underground garages as a result of the torrential floods that submerged much of the city.
The alert was raised on Friday when continuous heavy rains drove the water level of the Rongjiang River to 114.6 metres.
On Tuesday, authorities in Rongjiang raised the flood alert to its highest level, warning that river levels could peak at 255 metres.
The county – which has a population of about 300,000 – has not seen these flood levels in 30 years, according to newspaper China Daily.
Resident Wu Hanjun told the newspaper on Tuesday afternoon: “The rain has stopped now, but the floodwaters are still quite high and expected to rise.”
Residents in most of the old town and parts of the new district were reportedly told to move to higher-ground shelters on Tuesday, as per an evacuation order.
China experiences regular flooding during the summer due to the East Asian monsoon, which brings heavy, continuous rainfall from June to August.
Warm, moist air from the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean also feeds storms, causing rivers to overflow.
It comes as southern China saw torrential rains in April 2024, swelling the Bei River in Guangdong by up to 19 feet above warning levels.
Over 110,000 residents were evacuated, and more than a million households experienced power outages.
Shocking footage shows cars being swept away by powerful flood currents.
Photos also reveal vehicles submerged in water and rescue workers carrying people through chest-deep floodwaters out of buildings.
In July 2021, floods devastated Zhengzhou, in China’s Henan province flooded – after the heaviest rainfall recorded in over a millennium in that region.
The rains submerged parts of the city, including subway lines.
Distressing footage shows panicked passengers trapped in Zhengzhou’s subway – flooded to shoulder-deep levels – texting their final goodbyes.
Hundreds of people had to be rescued as carriages became submerged.
At least 25 people died as a result of the floods in central China, while over 100,000 were forced to flee as cities became submerged.

THE worst airports have been revealed this week – with one spot that’s popular with Irish jetsetters making the list.
As holiday season booms, we take a look at which airport will have you waiting hours before take-off?
The worst airports have been revealed with one Irish spot making the listBelfast International AirportBelfast International Airport placed number 13 on the list[/caption]
Arriving at the airport at least three hours before your flight takes off is an unwritten rule in Ireland that everyone follows.
But this is set to go out with the window as The Telegraphhas put together a list of the worst airports based on four- or five-star reviews for ‘airport queueing time’ onAirlineQuality.com.
Numerous airports were ranked with a low star rating by frequent flyers, with one Irish airport featured on the list.
Belfast International Airport received a low rating of two out of 10 stars on the airliner ranking site.
While only placing 13th on the list, it is above Belgium, which has a whopping five-hour wait at its security checkpoint.
Located in Northern Ireland the airport sees over 200 flights leaving per day.
The UK airport had one of the longest queues along with Grenoble,Berlin,Hurghada and Venice Treviso.
One passenger said: “I am sad to say that this airport is the worst I have ever encountered in all my years travelling!”
As they compared the building to a jail, ” The staff are overly officious, the atmosphere is more reminiscent of a prison that an airport. “
Belfast International Airport received numerous negative reviews from frequent flyers, but one passenger thought differently.
Not all is that bad at the Belfast location, as one passenger reassured holiday goers.
They stated: “I’ve seen a lot of bad reviews of this airport but I wanted to reassure people that the airport is not as bad as it seems.”
And the Republic of Ireland is sadly no better, with Dublin Airport receiving a rating of four out of 10 on airlinequality.com.
Most passengers were upset over the customer service rather than the waiting time at the largest airport in Ireland.

“Maybe it is time to call on the Irish Tourism Board about this.”
Two other UK airports also made the list –London Stanstedand Luton.
London Lutonhas average recorded wait times of 42 minutes including security and passport control, whileLondon Stanstedis 41 minutes.
Brussels actually landed behind Belfast in 14th place, but did get a ‘special mention’ for its incredibly long queues.

TAOISEACH Micheal Martin has revealed he does not agree with new US visa rules targeting students as part of Donald Trump’s crackdown.
And Simon Harris has confirmed he has serious concerns over the move.
Speaking at Dublin’s Convention Centre last night Martin disagreed with the moveCate McCurry/PA WireThe US embassy in Dublin issued a stark alert to those wishing to travelGetty Images
New advice will hit those applying for the the F, M, and J classifications, including the popular J1 visa.
Issuing an update on the changes to the visa application process US officials said “we will conduct a comprehensive and thorough vetting”.
Changes now mean anyone applying for a visa must have their social media accounts set to public and not private.
In a notice the US embassy in Dublin advised these privacy settings must be changed “immediately”.
They said: “Effective immediately, all individuals applying for an F, M, or J nonimmigrant visa are requested to adjust the privacy settings on all of their social media accounts to ‘public’ to facilitate vetting necessary to establish their identity and admissibility to the United States under U.S. law.”
The embassy said applicants may still submit visa applications and attend scheduled interviews, but they may be ineligible for visa issuance or admission to the United States.
Students in Ireland have been warned of online activism for months by travel experts and officials here, amid ongoing efforts by Trump’s administration to vet applicants’ social media.
The Taoiseach said: “I believe the measures now facing students seeking US visas are excessive, I don’t approve of them and I don’t agree with them.
“One of the great things in the modern world has been the capacity for young people to travel.”
He continued: “There is an issue around freedom of speech but it’s more the atmosphere that’s created by these measures, the fear and the anxiety that young people will now experience travelling.”
He also revealed while speaking at the Convention Centre in Dublin yesterday that J1 applications are down at the moment.
And amid the new rule change, that tightens restrictions even further, Tanaiste Simon Harris has highlighted the “deep concern, confusion and apprehension” caused by the move.
The Tanaiste, who is also Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade and Minister for Defence, said he is “very concerned”.
He explained: “I am very concerned by the updated advice, set out in a formal notice from the US State Department, in regard to expanded vetting of the social media accounts of new applicants for student visas to travel to the US.
“While US immigration policy is a matter for the US authorities and I fully respect the administration’s right to determine their own immigration policy, this decision has understandably caused deep concern, confusion and apprehension for young Irish people who may wish to travel to the United States.
“Our relationship with the United States is deep and enduring. Importantly it also sees thousands of people travel in both directions every year.
“The intergenerational, people-to-people relationship between the US and Ireland begins with the opportunities that both countries afford to young people. It is important that we work to protect this.”
KEY MOVES
Simon Harris has already outlined three moves he plans to take to ease tensions for young travellers from Ireland.
The Tanaiste has already been in contact with the US embassy here and US administration to provide as much clarity as possible on the new rules.
He has also instructed his officials to engage with third-level institutions that provide services for students who wish to travel with the United States so that clear guidance and support can be offered.
He explained: “Last night, I have asked my officials to engage directly with the US embassy here in Dublin and with the administration more widely in a bid to ascertain and provide as much clarity as possible about these new arrangements, particularly to those students who are due to travel in the coming months.
“I also asked my officials to engage with third-level institutions and organisations that provide services for students who wish to travel with the United States.
“This will be with the clear aim of providing as much clarity as possible on the impact of these new arrangements, relevant guidance and furthermore assessing what possible supports can be provided to young people who wish to travel to the United States in the coming months.”
A US Ambassador to Ireland set to take up his post next month, with Harris aiming to raise the issue with him then.
‘HEAVY-HANDED RULES’
The move has also sparked concern among other political figures who have blasted Trump’s administration and the “chilling” new move.
Labour’s Further and Higher Education Spokesperson Senator Laura Harmon said the new moves may leave people feeling as though they can’t express themselves online.
She said: “We must remember that forcing people to hand over years of personal online activity creates a chilling effect.
“People may feel they cannot speak freely or express themselves openly online. This is an unwelcome interference in private life and a step too far for any fair visa system.”
She added: “These heavy-handed new rules could deter students from applying and erode trust in a system that has worked well for generations.
“Let’s be honest: the only thing that is ever certain with Donald Trump’s administration is uncertainty. Policies like these sudden social media checks will cause confusion and fear among applicants.
“It sends the wrong message to young Irish people who want to broaden their horizons and build experience abroad.”

ARSENAL are reportedly discussing a move for Sevilla midfielder Lucien Agoume amid concerns Thomas Partey may not extend his contract with the London club.
The Gunners are negotiating a new deal with Partey, 32, with the Ghanaian’s current terms set to expire next week.
GettyArsenal are reportedly discussing a move to sign Lucien Agoume from Sevilla[/caption]
GettyThomas Partey is yet to agree a new contract at Arsenal[/caption]
According to The Athletic, the two parties are yet to find an agreement and Partey is beginning to entertain offers from elsewhere.
The midfielder is understood to be keen on remaining in London, but Arsenal are preparing potential alternatives in case Partey doesn’t pen a new deal at the Emirates.
The Atheltic report that one name that is under discussion is 23-year-old Lucien Agoume.
Agoume, a French youth international, made a splash in La Liga last season as he helped keep Sevilla afloat in the midst of a relegation battle – making 35 appearances, scoring once and providing three assists.
The defensive-minded rising star came through the ranks at Sochaux’s academy, which has produced the likes of Ibrahima Konate and Marcus Thuram, before signing for Inter Milan in 2019.
His time with Inter didn’t go to plan, seeing him sent out on a number of loan moves to develop his game before ultimately being snapped up by Sevilla on a permanent deal last summer.
Agoume has been likened to former Chelsea and Leicester superstar N’Golo Kante by those that have been watching him, with fans excited at the prospect of what he could bring to Arsenal.
One fan wrote: “He’s never going to be a lone No.6, but in a double pivot he could be the next N’Golo Kante”.
Join SUN CLUB for the Arsenal Files every Friday plus in-depth coverage and exclusives from The Emirates
While another added: “I am liking all I read about Lucien Agoume, and if he anything like N’Golo Kante I will be delighted if we get him.”
Arsenal are already bringing in midfield reinforcements this summer after agreeing a deal to sign Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi.
Zubimendi, 26, is set to finalise his switch to the Emirates in July due to Sociedad’s request to delay the deal until next month for financial reasons.
It’s thought Arsenal will pay slightly more than Zubimendi’s £51m release clause in order to split the cost over multiple instalments.
Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga also appears set to complete a £5m move to North London as Arsenal look to bring in a new backup option for number one shot-stopper David Raya.
While it’s also been claimed that Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, who Arsenal failed to sign in January, is still admired and could return to the frame should they fail to land one of Sesko or Gyokeres.

A SCORNED ex branded her love rival a “homewrecking w***e with saggy bits” in a vile smear campaign that left her victim living in fear.
Stephanie Hughes, 39, was bombarded with hateful messages on Facebook by Christina Corish after she began a relationship with the mum’s ex-husband Richard.
CavendishChristina Corish waged a hate campaign against her love rival[/caption]
CavendishStephanie Hughes had begun dating Corish’s ex when she was targeted[/caption]
CavendishCorish accused Stephanie of stealing her husband Richard, pictured[/caption]
Despite splitting with her spouse three years earlier, Corish, 37, contacted Stephanie’s friends to tell them: “She is sleeping with my husband”.
She also reached out to parents at the school where Stephanie’s children were pupils to brand the mum-of-four a “homewrecking w***e with saggy bits”.
Stephanie, who runs a travel agency, initially ignored the sick abuse but was forced to step in when Corish targeted her business and accused her of being a “conwoman”.
Corish pleaded guilty to harassment between August 2023 and February 2025 at Sefton Magistrates’ Court but avoided jail.
She was instead handed a 12 month community order and was banned from contacting Stephanie for five years.
In a victim impact statement, Stephanie told the court: “The harassment and stalking I experienced had a devastating effect on every part of my life mentally, emotionally, physically and financially.
“This has been one of the most terrifying and damaging experiences and it has seeped into every part of my life. I felt exposed, scared and broken. he did not just target me. She contacted clients and colleagues and tried to ruin my reputation and humiliate me.
“I was so embarrassed and ashamed I stopped posting online. I built my travel business on social media but I could not log on as the fear and shame were overwhelming. She even sent messages to mothers at the school calling me a w***e, accusing me of having an affair. I felt sick.
“I did not want to leave the house let alone go to the school gates.
“I could not sleep. Every time a notification came up or the doorbell rang I would freeze. I was terrified of what she would do next. I developed PTSD.”
The court was told Corish and Richard married in 2015 and had two children together before they split five years later.
In 2023, Richard moved on with Stephanie while they were joint directors at her company.
Corish initially contacted the victim on social media asking if she knew Richard before phoning her three times.
Stephanie responded asking why Corish wanted to know but was hit with a barrage of abuse.
She said: “When I met Richard he told me they had been separated for three years.
“At no point did I think he was in a relationship with anyone. But she called me a home wrecker and threatened to out me.
The court heard Corish contacted two of Stephanie’s friends on New Year’s Day 2024 claiming the mum had slept with her “husband”.
Corish ramped up the abuse campaign when she posted on Stephanie’s business page falsely claiming she was conning customers out of money.
Stephanie said: “The continued behaviour has caused me a lot of distress and I eventually reported the matter to the police.
“The latest incident meant she was not going to stop. I cannot take much more. It has caused a massive massive amount of stress and anxiety affecting my physical and mental health.
”The messages to me and friends were bad enough, she is now trying to affect my business. She also found out where I lived through Companies House which really increased my anxiety. I cannot relax at home.”
Corish had a previous conviction for criminal damage from last year after smashing windows at the home of her ex-husband’s mother.
She wept in the dock as she told the court: “I am not going to contact her. I have no interest in making any contact anymore. That was the last time.”
As well as a community order, Corish was also ordered to complete 15 days of rehabilitation activity.
Sentencing her District Judge Paul Healey said: ”You embarked upon a course of harassment against Stephanie Hughes when she was totally blameless.
“She had nothing to do with you but she was worried about who you were, why you were contacting her, the abuse, the threats to her.
“You caused real issues for her business and family. This has got to stop now.”

Why police were called to first Dunnes Stores opening
BETWEEN the weekly food shops and bargain fashion - Dunnes Stores is a staple retailer in Irish households.
But this wasn’t always the case, and when the initial branch of the shop opened its doors in 1944 it caused quite the stir
On March 31 of the year, Ben Dunne opened the first ever Dunnes Stores on St Patrick’s Street in Co Cork.
Locals quickly learned of the grand opening and flooded into the store in what the retailer’s archives recall as a “shopping frenzy.”
The bargain clothing on sale inside the new store at “pre-war prices” was one of the factors cited for the buzz.
During the chaos a window was forced in and Gardai were called to the scene.
Cops worked to deal with the eager crowds and keep shoppers calm and safe before they made it into the store for their first Dunnes experience.
Fast forward some 80 years, the business now employs over 18,000 people and although an opening of a Dunnes branch hasn’t caused quite as much stir since the very first one, it has cemented its place as one of the nation’s leading retailers.
