Now, his will has been revealed with his children Tom and Lucy Wright the executors of his estate.
Steve left behind a total of £40,623 after tax.
The radio legend donated £15,000 to Cancer Research UK and generously donated £10,000 to the British Heart Foundation – with both contributions free from inheritance tax.
The rest of the money was left to Steve’s two children to be split between them.
During a stellar career, Steve also presented the popularSunday Love Songsmid-morning show on Radio 2.
His last show was a pre-recorded Valentine’s Day edition of Sunday Love Songs.
He had been due to front a new BBC spin-off show as the broadcaster planned to launch four fresh stations before his tragic death.
His family said in a moving statement at the time: “It is with deep sorrow and profound regret that we announce the passing of our beloved Steve Wright.
“In addition to his son, Tom, and daughter, Lucy, Steve leaves behind his brother, Laurence and his father Richard.
“Also, much-loved close friends and colleagues, and millions of devoted radio listeners who had the good fortune and great pleasure of allowing Steve into their daily lives as one of the UK’s most enduring and popular radio personalities.
“As we all grieve, the family requests privacy at this immensely difficult time.”
Wright was born in Greenwich, London and attended Eastwood High School in Southend-on-Sea, Essex.
It was there that he was cruelly nicknamed Big Nose and Concorde.
His first job after leaving school was in marine insurance but after three years he realised it wasn’t for him.
It was then that Wright left to become a local newspaper reporter.
This led him to BBC, as a record librarian, which then went on to his own shows – and the rest was history.
But in 2022 he announced he was stepping back from his Afternoon show after more than two decades.
He said at the time: “Before we start the show proper, if I may, I’d just like to say thank you ever so much for all the messages that have come in, over the weekend after I announced on Friday on the afternoon that we are leaving the afternoon show.”
Steve joined theBBCin the 1970s and spent four decades hosting his beloved afternoon shows.
He also fronted TV programmes for the broadcaster, including Top of the Pops.
In 1976, he briefly left the broadcaster for Thames Valley Radio but returned four years later to present weekend programmes.
The move paid off and his defining show Steve Wright in the Afternoon was launched in 1981.
Although a scheduling shake-up meant Scott Mills took over his afternoon slot, Steve stayed on to present Sunday Love Songs.
Speaking about the shock axing, the DJ said at the time: “Sometimes people don’t want you”.
He continued: “I’ve been offered loads of stuff at the BBC and I’m staying at Radio 2. What it actually means for me is rather than working six days a week, I’ll be working maybe two and a half days a week.”
In his personal life, Steve was married to US-born Cindi Robinson until they divorced in 1999.
He later revealed he had struggled to find love since due to his demanding radio schedule.
Most recently, Steve was made an MBE in the New Year Honours for services to radio.

PARENTS heading to the seaside have been urged to take selfies with their children after 40 kids went missing on a crowded UK beach in just one day.
The HM Coastguard advice comes after rescue teams received a high number of call outs to a crowded West Sussex beach on Saturday.
During the heatwave on Saturday, 40 children went missing from West Wittering beach, above
Police in Chichester said there had been “multiple reports” of lost children on West Wittering beach during the hot weather at the weekend.
It said all reports “required a large number of resources to assist them in being reunited”.
HM Coastguard confirmed all the children reported lost on the beach had been found safe and well.
An 11-year-old child was also reported missing from nearby Camber Sands beach on Saturday.
The child was found safe and well prior to the coastguards and lifeboat crew arriving on scene.
Sussex Police said it had been “an exceptionally busy day”.
‘Take a selfie’
Tom Barnett, network commander at HM Coastguard said: “Keeping an eye on your children is obviously the best way to stop them wandering off into difficult situations, but we understand sometimes that can be a challenge.
“Busy beaches can be disorientating, especially to little ones, so it’s good to have a few Plan Bs up your sleeve.
“Take a photo of your child when you arrive that clearly shows what they look like and what they are wearing and agree a meeting point if they get lost like a lifeguard station.
“Some places even give away free kids’ wristbands to write your phone number on so you can be called if you do get separated.
“Remember in an emergency at the coast call 999 and ask for the coastguard.”
A spokesman for Sussex Police added: “Please remain vigilant regarding the location of your children.
“We have had multiple reports come through to Sussex Police of parents losing sight of their children and being unable to find them due to how busy the beach becomes, which has required a large number of resources to assist them in being reunited with families.”
It added it also had to deal with several other incidents, such as helping people who had got into difficulty in the water, administering “medical assistance” and “setting up a helicopter landing site in Chichester”.
The latest advice follows on from an urgent warning issued to parents by police in April after “several” children went missing on beaches near the Lancashire coast.
At the time, cops issued a statement for people to make sure that kids are not left unsupervised at beaches as they can be “very dangerous places”.
Lancashire Police’s Fylde unit said the warm weather had led to a rise in visitors to nearby beaches but it was “disappointing to see that youngsters are still regularly permitted to approach the water unsupervised”.
‘This could prove fatal’
In a social media post, they said: “This could prove fatal, even to those who are competent swimmers.”
The dangerous sunglasses for children
A major warning has been issued to parents over illegal sunglasses sold in the UK that are harmful to children.
A third of the kids’ sunglasses bought from online marketplaces including Amazon, AliExpress, eBay and Temu can’t provide the eye protection required and are unsafe for children to wear, new research from Which? revealed.
Amazon, AliExpress, eBay and Temu were contacted for comment.
Of all the sunglasses the watchdog tested, the ones they were most concerned about were:
Cute Cat Kids’ Sunglasses UV Protection, which cost £1.59 (bought from Amazon). Researchers noted the lenses let through between 19 and 22 times too much UVB, which means they’re providing hardly any eye protection.
Classic Vintage Holiday Sunglasses UV400 £3.99. Researchers note that since their investigation began, this pair of glasses is no longer listed by the seller. But the eBay store they bought them from lists another 34 different models and claims more than 5,000 sales of sunglasses.
Others tested by Which? included a heart-shaped pair of glasses bought from a seller on eBay(Retro Love Heart shape UV400, £2.83). The lenses aren’t consistent in the way they filter UV.
Officers added: “In two days, there have been several reports of missing children, which have used a significant amount of police and coastguard resources.
“These incidents are completely avoidable and have a detrimental impact to the service we offer, as when police officers are looking for lost children, we are unable to deal with or prevent crime.”

Darkest soap storylines
Over the years the likes of EastEnders, Emmerdale and Coronation Street have all tried to try outdo each other with their outlandish plots in a bid to keep us tuning in each week. But here are some of the darkest that had fans in shock…
EastEnders: Tony grooming Whitney (2008-2009) – Tony King first appeared in Albert Square in 2008 as the boyfriend of Bianca, played by Patsy Palmer. But it was quickly revealed he was a paedophile who had been grooming vulnerable Whitney, Bianca’s adopted stepdaughter from a previous relationship, since she was 12. The shocking storyline attracted more than 200 complaints within a week of it beginning. Whitney waited until her 16th birthday to reveal the truth to a horrified Bianca, who called the police.
Emmerdale: Holly’s drug addiction and shock death (2010-2016) – In 2010, Holly Barton (played by Sophie Powles) became Emmerdale’s first teenage drug addict. The shocking storyline saw her taking cocaine on a night out before developing a deadly heroin habit. Parents John and Moira desperately tried to help get their daughter clean but when Holly returned in 2016, following a four-year absence, she quickly relapsed. Fans were left stunned and heartbroken when distraught Moira found Holly dead in her bed from a heroin overdose.
Hollyoaks: Luke’s rape (2000) – Actor Gary Lucy was just 17 when he took on this groundbreaking storyline, which saw his character Luke Morgan become soap’s first male rape victim. Luke had endured a long-running bullying campaign by football rival Mark Gibbs – who raped him after Luke stood up to him. Luke was left suicidal following the brutal attack, before opening up to his brother Adam. Gibbs was sentenced to eight years in prison. Gary won the Best Actor gong at the British Soap Awards in 2000 for his performance.
Coronation Street: Evil Richard Hillman (2001-2003) – Just a mere mention of ‘Richard Hillman’ is enough to send a shiver down the spines of soap fans. He is often ranked one of the most evil soap villains and it’s not hard to see why. The smooth-talking financial adviser bashed his ex-wife Patricia over the head with a shovel. In a bid to keep his mother-in-law Audrey quiet, he set fire to her house. And when Maxine caught him trying to murder Emily Bishop, he took a crowbar to her head. He made his exit from the cobbles in 2003 when he drove Gail Platt, played by Helen Worth, and her family into the canal. They survived, but he didn’t.

Meanwhile Oisin Murphy was the king of Windsor again last night as he took the feature five-furlong Fitzdares’ Sprint Series race on Nogo’s Dream.
The ace jockey made it an incredible 14 wins for the season at the Thames track as he booted in Richard Hughes’ five-year-old speedster.
Murphy was riding the gelding for the first time and took it up a furlong out on the 9-5 shot who knuckled down well to beat Grandlad by three quarters of a length.
Murphy said: “I’ve been lucky to get on some nice horses here — and Nogo’s Dream did the job really well.
“He found plenty when I asked him to go and win the race.”
The reigning champion jockey is now on 49 wins in this season’s title race — 18 clear of nearest rival William Buick.
