AN EXPERT on love has shared the one thing you need to make sure your relationship stands the test of time.
Arthur Brooks, a social science professor at Harvard has studied the subject of love for over 25 years and found the one thing that keeps couples together.
GettyLove experts share the one trait your relationship needs to last[/caption]
SuppliedArthur Brook also shared the red flag your heading for the end[/caption]
Speaking onThe Drive podcastwith Peter Attia MD, the pair shared their insight on romantic relationships.
During their chat, the pro explained that the key is finding a partner who you also see as your best friend.
He explained that this bond will remain even if the initial chemistry fizzles out.
Arthur: “One of the most important things for a happy life is a partnership with somebody who will be the last person who you set eyes on as you take your last dying breath, that is really, really important.”
“The goal of your marriage is not passion, it’s friendship. This is the goal, you must be close friends, ideally best friends, with your spouse.
“I’m going to be with my wife Ester until death do us part, that has to be the juice of the relationship where the love actually makes happiness and love is truly the great secret to happiness.”
He said that there are also a couple of indicators that a marriage may end in divorce – including people who feel lonely in their relationship.
The love expert used the example of ’empty nest syndrome’ which refers to parents experiencing sadness or distress when their children have grown into adults and moved out of the family home.
Arthur added: “The people who suffer the most from empty nest syndrome is not the empty nest it’s the fact that they are with one other bird and they don’t really like that bird.”
He said that when two people have been together for a long time it can be normal – and even ‘advisable’ – that their passion levels are not as high as when they were fresh into their relationship.
According to the expert, low intimacy levels are “healthy, normal and actually advisable because it’s more sustainable in the long run.”
Even those with no intimacy can be found to be happy as they have ‘very, very close personal lifelong friends,’ instead.
“Here is the key, if you don’t have a spouse you need real friends. These are people who know your secrets, take your 2am phone call and that you talk to a lot,” he explained.
However, Arthur also said that it is still very important to ensure that you upkeep friendships with others even if you are in a marriage; adding that men are usually worse at keeping in touch with their pals.
Signs your relationship is heading for a divorce
Persistent Communication Breakdowns Constant misunderstandings, arguments, or a complete lack of meaningful conversation can signal deep-seated issues.
Emotional Distance Feeling like roommates rather than partners, with a noticeable lack of intimacy or emotional connection.
Frequent Criticism and Contempt Regularly criticising each other and showing contempt, such as sarcasm, eye-rolling, or mocking, can erode the relationship’s foundation.
Unresolved Conflicts Recurrent arguments about the same issues without any resolution can indicate deeper incompatibilities.
Loss of Trust Trust is crucial in any relationship. If it’s been broken and cannot be rebuilt, it may be a sign that the relationship is in trouble.
Different Life Goals Significant differences in future aspirations, such as career goals, lifestyle choices, or family planning, can create insurmountable divides.
Avoidance Preferring to spend time apart rather than together, whether through work, hobbies, or social activities, can indicate a desire to escape the relationship.
Lack of Support Feeling unsupported, whether emotionally, financially, or practically, can lead to feelings of isolation and resentment.
Financial Disagreements Constantly arguing about money, spending habits, or financial priorities can strain the relationship.
Infidelity Whether physical or emotional, infidelity can be a major breach of trust and a sign of deeper issues in the relationship.
Changes in Affection A noticeable decrease in affection, physical touch, or romantic gestures can indicate a loss of connection.
“That is one of the reasons why men do so poorly when they lose their wives because a lot of them don’t have real friendships,” he added.
And there was one major red flag your relationship was doomed.
The expert said: “One of the greatest predictors of divorce is partners who are lonely while living together and this [means] that the only thing you have in common is your kids.
“[When] that one point of commonality disappears and you’re sitting across the table blinking at each other during dinner and not talking because you literally have nothing to talk about.”
To prevent this fate, Arthur said that it is important for married couples to partake in activities together, whether that is reading the same book, playing the same sports or even practicing the same religion to keep their bond strong and allow them to have things in common.

CHRIS Hill has blasted the ‘atrocious’ player welfare he and his Salford team-mates are having to endure through their financial crisis.
Bridging finance is expected to see a winding up petition brought by HMRC, scheduled for today, adjourned and the £626,000 debt paid off.
Chris Hill has described the player welfare he and his Salford team-mates have received as ‘atrocious’SWPIX.COM
Whether wages will be paid tomorrow, as is normal, or by the end of the month, as it contracted, is anyone’s guess.
But England prop Hill is in no doubt about one thing – the support Paul Rowley’s players have received from the governing body is nowhere near good enough.
He said: “The player welfare’s atrocious. It’s atrocious.
“It’s good within the club. Chris O’Connor’s led that, but a bit wider. Putting restrictions on us, making lads roll out with injuries, it’s poor.
“You saw it against Hull FC. Cain Robb gets knocked out, he stands up, blood pouring off and lets him play on. It’s poor and that’s just one part of it.
“When you’re playing with young lads, they know you’re playing with injuries and they’re letting it carry on. What would you expect us to do?

“There are still lads playing with injuries now and while Sam Hill’s a great prospect, he shouldn’t be playing week in, week out.
“That’s not because he’s noy been playing well. That’s just for his welfare.
“Youngsters like him and Nathan Connell are taking the chances and they’ll learn a lot from this experience but there are a lot of lessons to be learned from this.
“They’ll learn from the experience but they shouldn’t be going through it.”
Hill also vented at the lack of clarity over who to tell at the Rugby Football League, adding: “Who do we feed back to? I’ve not a clue.”
Eight senior stars have left Salford amid months of wage dramas as owners Sire Kailahi and Curtiz Brown scramble to pay players and staff.
Hill, who moved from Huddersfield for this season, has not thought about shipping out but he cannot blame those who had enough.
Hill highlighted an incident involving debutant hooker Cain RobbSWPIX.COM
The 37-year-old told SunSport: “I’ve always said I understand those who’ve left.
“You’ve got to think of your family and what’s best for you at the end of the day. If that was leaving, good on them.
“But I want to stay and that’s what I’ll do.
“Hopefully it does turn around and if it does happen, we can build off this.
“There’s belief and I want to play for these boys, young lads coming through and stuff like that. I’ve always said that and I want to help them in as many ways as I can.
“If that means sticking it out and really grinding it out, I will do. I’ve stuck to my guns.
“I’ve stuck to what I’ve done throughout my career. I’ll fight to the death for my team. The minute you stop enjoying it, the minute you retire.

“We’re still here, we’re still believing and we’ll fight for everything.”
Regarding the Cain Robb incident, a Rugby Football League spokesperson said it was managed between the Salford medical staff and the match officials – as suggested by post-match comments from the Salford head coach, the incident was not immediately clear.
They added: “The match officials stopped play as soon as they became aware (the tackle following), and they took appropriate action.”
On the player welfare point, they commented: “Player welfare has been a key consideration throughout the RFL’s approach to the issues at Salford this season.
“The stated priority of doing all possible to support the club through their financial problems has had a focus on ensuring players and staff being continued to be paid and maintaining the sporting integrity of the Super League competition.
“The decision to limit the club’s salary cap was made in an effort to help the club address their financial issues. The RFL holds regular meetings with RL Cares and the GMB Union which would be forums for concerns to be raised.”

THE ad for the sickening Disneyland “child wedding” has been revealed – calling kids as young as five to watch Brit paedophile Jacky Jhaj allegedly “marry” a nine-year-old girl.

The disgraced director and actor, from Feltham, was jailed in 2016 for four years after being found guilty on four counts of sexual activity with two 15-year-olds.
His latest arrest came on Saturday, with French police charging him with multiple offences on Tuesday in connection with the staged stunt.
The sex offender was allegedly the “groom” in a twisted mock wedding ceremony – involving a nine-year-old girl as “bride”.
Disney staff immediately called cops after seeing a “scared and confused” child in a big dress with four-inch heels taped to her feet, reports French newspaper Le Parisien.
Jhaj was described as the “mastermind” behind the abominable stunt.
The Facebook ad for the vile production has been revealed, offering kids as young as five 200 euros to be an “extra” in the fake wedding.
100 kids aged five to 15 were required, according to the ad, with those involved in the production having to maintain “absolute confidentiality”.
Their role was to “stand up, sit, applaud and play their part in the prestigious gathering”.
A private bus service to transport “guests” from the Paris city centre to the “exceptional live shoot” was offered.
And those who attended what was dubbed in the ad a “high-end wedding rehearsal” were required to wear a “very elegant evening outfit” like a “suit, evening dress or tuxedo”.
The sickening advert was posted by a woman named Christelle Ka, who is a self-proclaimed “actor and TV host”.
It is unclear what her connection to paedo Jhaj is.
Le Casting Parisien and Christelle Ka have been approached for comment.
Jhaj has reportedly been charged with fraud, breach of trust, money laundering and identity theft after the horror incident.
Jhaj and the “bride” girl’s 41-year-old mother, believed to be Ukrainian, were arrested, along with two others involved in the ceremony.
Both Disneyland Paris and the “guests” claim they were deliberately misled – none knew a child would be involved in the mock wedding.
The sex offender even conned Disney officials by “assuming the identity of a Latvian national and using false documents to secure the contract” of the park, according to a Meaux prosecuting spokesman.
Prosecutors confirmed on Tuesday that Jhaj is known in the UK “for sexual offences against minors” and is on the run from British authorities, French prosecutors say.

InstagramThe man posing as the ‘groom’ claimed that he was the director of a production company and that they were shooting a video[/caption]
Before his arrest, he drove around the streets of Hounslow, offering girls alcohol and claiming to be a Hollywood film producer.
After his conviction, Detective Constable Nav Johal, the investigating officer from Hounslow CID, said: “Thanks to the courage and bravery of the young vulnerable victims who gave evidence, a dangerous sexual predator has been brought to justice.
“I am hopeful that the verdict and sentencing will give them some peace and closure, and they will be able to, in time, move forward from this difficult period.”
But the convicted paedophile has pulled a string of distasteful stunts since being released from jail.
In September 2024, Jhaj staged an explosion using an old BBC truck and Union Jack-draped vehicles packed with explosives, filming himself naked as the blaze spiralled out of control behind him.
A year before the explosion, footage surfaced of Jhaj mixing with around 200 children and 100 young women at a film shoot in London’s Leicester Square.
A Met spokesperson said: “A 39-year-old man is wanted by the Met Police for breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a breach of a Sex Offenders’ Register notification requirement.
“We are aware the man has been arrested in France for other matters and officers are in contact with the French authorities.”
Disneyland Paris rented out the iconic castle grounds to the organisers under the belief it was a genuine wedding
